I was 15 when I fell in love with jazz. I hurt my back playing American football and had to lay in bed for two weeks. The only stations on the radio not playing the same old pop tunes, was KXTC a 24 hour all jazz station. It won awards as the best Jazz station in the Southwest. I'd listen from 8 am til after midnight. The format went from Bee Bop, jazz standards, modern, vocal jazz and fusion jazz. Learned to love it all and have been a fan for over 40 years. Before my bedridden injury, I knew who Lonnie Liston Smith, Grover Washington Jr, Stanley Turrentine, Herb Alpert, The Crusaders, Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock were. While listening I found out who Les McCann, Ronnie Laws, Eddie Harris, Paulino DeCosta, Bob James, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Davd Grusin, Micheal Franks, Stanley Clark, Gato Barbieri, Chuck Mangione and many others are. Didn't like getting injured, but I may not have found Jazz for years if it weren't for football.
