- The geiko and maiko of Kyoto, keepers of time honored traditional dance and music, are concentrated in five kagai (geisha districts), across the city. Each of the districts performs a large-scale dance for the public once a year, and Kamishichiken's district's Kitano Odori runs from March 25th to April 7th to usher in the spring. Two performances are held each day, at 1:30pm and 4:00pm. and tickets cost 4,300 yen. For an additional 500 yen guests can enjoy a cup of green tea and a sweet before the play, which also comes with a commemorative plate. Tickets can be purchased online for those with Japanese credit cards, procured through travel agents, or reserved with assistance at the Tourist Information Center in Kyoto Station.
The Kitano Odori usually consists of three sections: a multi-scene story play, a collection of themed dances, and the ever popular Kamishichiken Serenade finale piece. With the exception of the finale, the other performances change each year. Recent story plays have included "Enishi no Miya", a romance about two lovers trying to prove they are meant to be together, "Naniwa Utazaimon", a comic adaptation of a classic love suicide tragedy, and "Shijō Kabuki", a dramatic story about the woman who invented kabuki theater.
Celebrating its 65th year in 2017, the Kitano Odori was officially begun in 1952 to commemorate the 1,050th anniversary of the founding of Kitano Tenmangū, the shrine located next to the Kamishichiken geisha district. Kamishichiken's elegant geiko, charming maiko apprentices, and skilled musicians come together on this scale only once a year to put on the Kitano Odori, so don't miss out during your spring trip to Kyoto!
Kitano Odori Ticket (Performance Only): 4,300 yen
Kitano Odori Ticket (Includes Tea Ceremony): 4,800 yen
Kitano Odori Program: 600 yen

This will always be my favorite thing about the internet. When it introduces you to something you didn't know you enjoy.
The Japanese culture is just so beautiful
and elegant
same
@이고양 okay...
Yes it is !😍
Every culture is beautiful ☺️
Imagine being one of the first foreigners back in the 19th century to see geiko/maiko performances. They must've absolutely been enchanted
Japan has such an amazing culture
I am going to see it live this November, i can't wait!
Edit : It was wonderful! They also sell Confections and snacks too which i bought for my friends and family at home. Too bad you're not allowed to record the performance, but overall is great, loving it!
Katsuna's dance is so angelic, I take a lot of inspiration from her for dancing ballet.
omg it's like watching a painting in motion.
3:16 the red kimono is so pretty
I’m currently reading “Geisha, A Life” and I wanted to be able to picture it properly in my head when they talk about their dance performances. I am not disappointed.
I know I’m 3+ years behind you but I’m doing the exact same thing right now haha
The geiko At 1:27 is really espressive, You Can Read The emotions of The character She plays
That is veteran geiko Fukuzuru-san dancing the "Flowers of Tabaruzaka", depicting the battlefield of the Satsuma Rebellion/Seinan War.
Geiko is the Kansai dialect for geisha. ^^
Maiko's are beautiful❤
1:19 is my favourite, such grace, power, and articulation all in one very expressive character.
Good eye! That's Fukuzuru-san, one of Kamishichiken's veteran geiko. She's very talented!
I was wondering about her. I got the same vibe from her as The Queen of the Night from Mozart's "The Magic Flute". I wonder what sort of role she was playing.
It is a male's dance that's why
I too was impressed by the old geiko.
The beauty of the performance left me breathless, true acts of art , a standing ovation for all those who danced . 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
1:31 - 1:54 I like that part very much, I don't know why.
Me tooo, am trynna see where the video of the full dance is if there is one just for that scene
2:04 - 2:32 i have literally never seen such a gorgeous geisha or maiko in my life, oh... dont even get me started... such grace, such expression, such emotion
I think this might be a Geiko rather than a Maiko.
You can generally regonize it by the hair. Geiko's wear wigs and Maikos use their real hair.
In the end for example the ones with accessories in their hair are Maikos. And their Kimonos are also more patterns and colourful than a Geiko's.
@@foureyedsnake244 There's no way to tell from this particular piece. She is in costume there, performing as a fictional character. She is wearing neither maiko nor geiko hair or dress.
In some of the skits, some of the geiko are even dressed as stylized men.
@@goombapizza6335judging from her age and that the Kimono she’s wearing is typical of a Geiko, I’m sure it’s safe to assume she’s a Geiko.
Wow! I didn't know the Kitano Odori had so many skits! I'm so used to seeing maiko and geiko dance, but to see them act is a completely different treat ^^ It was also fun to see Umechie again, I miss her~ and seeing Maiko Umehina-san when she was just starting brought back a lot of memories! I would love to know who the older geiko is, she's so fiery!!
What beautiful performance and culture of Japanese
This is the most graceful stage in life
The musicians are so serious, and the dancers perform so nicely.
1:27 a explosion of colour and music which made me feel overwhelmed and delighted!
Same, it somehow (To me) gave off a feeling of youthful innocence, but slowly aging.
❤️ Japan from México!
Japan is beautiful country
Wow! So incredibly beautiful! To be able to move with such grace and as if they are floating is incredible! I'd love to watch this live one day, I'm sure it's something to remember for sure!
Hope you can do it one day!
@@discoverkyoto I've always wanted to be a geisha
@@relaxingexscapes i think it is possible to be a geisha as a foreigner, i don’t know the process but i have seen geishas that are not japanese
I am happy that you are interested in Japan.🇯🇵🗻🗼🏯🌸☺️
I always wanted to see such dance/culture of Japan👏👏amazing すごい
0:29 Such speed with those tiny, elegant steps
I love Japan 🇯🇵❤️🇮🇳
There are many beautiful cultures around the world but the Japanese one stands out as particularly refined and elegant
Very beautiful.. and artistic... lovely and elegant dancing... I truly enjoyed watching
1:51 their facial expression i cant 🤣
Beautiful to watch old traditions.
Omg one of the best music same as Sudanese traditional music, stunning.
It’s my dream to party with Geisha one day.
They are so beautiful, and this performance is very beautiful too.
It's hard to get into the tea houses where a geisha performs, but you can go to some restaurants where you can watch Maiko (basically juniors in training) for much cheaper. When I get my poop in a group and finally get to Japan for a trip, that's my plan.
WHAT IS THIS STORY?! I'm catching so little of it and it's so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Elegance, beauty, expressiveness, tradition, I love these events, where you can enjoy the art of Maikos and Geikos, thank you very much.
The colors from their kimonos are so rich and a treat for the eyes.
I adore japanese culture and art!!!
So elegant and mysterious 💖
3:16
katsuna is No.1 MAIKO❗️
Nice to see young ladies here, upholding the tradition. Geisha is a declining profession (or at least it was ten years ago when I heard), but it would be a good opportunity for an artsy woman who's steadfast on not marrying. I hope the gentlemen always treat them right.
It truly is a privilege to watch this live. I’m glad to have experienced this graceful art form last week. Definitely one of Japan’s best.
I like it......its like european Ballet....so elegant......greetings from germany
I can not wait until I go to Japan! :D
there so pretty, and dance so gracefully too💝🌺
They're like butterflies!! 🤩
So much skill and talent in dance. And bless the dressers and musicians that help bring this alive
Thanks a lot! Watching the video makes you want to go visit Japan even more!
The unmatched elegance of everything Japanese.
I really wish I knew more of the story so I could understand this beautiful thing
That was really cool! All the different dances and plays were amazing to see.
it’s so beautiful
Brings warm memories back to see Umechie again. Hope she's doing well.
even the shadows are beautiful
they're so beautiful its uncanny
Beautiful!
Amazing!
They are so beautiful❤
Geishas are not artists
They're a work of art.
They live and breathe the art
Love it! Thank you for uploading this 💖
Beautiful video! I wish you could see more of Umeha and Naosome, and Ichimari is so charming. Loved it.

This here is why Kamishichiken is one of my favorite Kagai.
Kagai is East Japanese thing.
It's hanamachi in Kyoto.
