    There are several quality Kokanee fisheries in close proximity to Kamloops, British Columbia. Many of these lakes are stocked with all female triploid Kokanee periodically. In this video I fish Monte Lake and discuss the advantages of using all female triploid Kokanee in establishing fisheries that have the potential to create larger fish.

    A few months ago (think it was during one of your live streams) I asked for some more info on triploid v diploid kokanee fishing and here it is - thanks! And just FYI, I contacted Paulina Peak directly regarding shipping to Canada and didn't get a response. So, I make all my own according to your guidelines. Mostly micro hoochies and wedding bands. They work like a charm. Their loss.

    I've definitely had more than one loon up here at more than one lake take fish off the end of the line. I've even had them come up and try to take them off the stringer at the side of the boat.

    The lake I go to they never stock. But it doesn't get enough fishing pressure so all the kokanee are stunted. The biggest ive caught was 16 inches but most are only about 13.
    The brown trout are decent sized but not so big they could eat the bigger kokes.
    No lake trout.
    Decent cutthroat and rainbow trout though.
    My state DNR needs to improve the ramp, and probably raise the limit for kokanee from 8 to 15.

    Great video as always! Headed to Chelan next week to try out some methods I’ve learned from watching all of your videos. I heard the fish have moved to the upper lake… Do you have any videos with locations to look for them? I saw the one that you had on Chelan, but it was all lower lake.

    You mentioned that the triploids live to 5 years. I believe the biologists once thought they lived longer than that. Don't qoute me though. The issue we faced was the triploids were living longer, but a lot of them were getting too skinny and their meat did not taste great. I believe diploids are now being stocked more frequently and triploids are only used when lakes with naturally reproductive kokanee can be affected.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  Před 11 měsíci +1

      They can live beyond 5 years but from what I understand that is rare

    Thanks for the video. I’m making a career switch decision very soon and I understand that you spent some time in fisheries management (or at least know the “business”). I’m thinking about going into this field but I’m not yet sure I want to make the jump yet. Do you have a video that explains some of the aspects or even daily tasks of working in fisheries management?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Fisheries is such a broad field it would be hard to say. There are jobs in hatcheries, aquaculture, commercial fishery monitoring, invasive species management, endangered species recovery and habitat restoration, or in my field which is population monitoring and modeling.

    Are triploids more dormant/calm? I didn’t see 1 Koke Jump behind the kayak or come out of the water. They didn’t even seem to resist being netted?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  Před 11 měsíci +3

      I think that has a lot more to do with the much warmer water at the surface. Essentially oxygen deprived by the time they get to the kayak.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  Před 11 měsíci +4

      Kokanee have soft mouth and its easy to tear the hooks. A slow and steady retrieve puts more fish in the boat.
