- In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from the village of Bourton which is located 9 miles North West of Shaftesbury& 4 miles East of Wincanton. With my usual partner, Logan, having a rest at home, I was joined by my younger Whippet, Fiver.
I parked my car at the White Lion pub in Bourton (the most Northern pub in Dorset) and headed West towards Factory Hill. Passing through what was once Bullpits Golf Course (now closed permanently, I headed North following the course of the River Stour to White Cross.
At this point, I walked through woods uphill to Bottle's Hill & on to Pear Ash Farm.
The final leg of my route (which took me through 3 counties - Dorset, Somerset & Wiltshire) involved joining Long Lane and Kites Nest Lane (an old Pack Horse track) back to Bourton - passing by the site of the Bourton Mill & Foundry (now residential housing).
I finished my walk back at The White Lion pub.

Hello Dave and Fiver. A lovely walk with you two is just what I need. Just a beautiful day for it.Hello to Logan and sending him a big hug as well to Fiver. Thanks so much Dave.Take care☀️
Thank you Melissa.
I appreciate the meticulous research you do into the historic sites on your routes. The routes are well planned, but it takes gumption to venture forth like you do. Well done!
Thank you Amanda. :)
My wife and I did a walking trip in Wiltshire last September and spent a lovely afternoon at Stourhead. Your walk was wonderful and certainly reminded me of the beautiful countryside we so enjoyed!!
Glad it brought back great memories for you Timothy. Thanks for watching.
Another fab walk. Lovely to meet Fiver. Thank you for creating and sharing
Thank you Jerry. Fiver is a good boy!

Thank you Sandy. Fiver was a good boy - I expect he will make further appearances on the channel in the future!
An amazing walk as always Dave and great to meet Fiver, I'm sure Logan enjoyed his day of rest, great video as always 😀 👍
Thank you. Yes, Logan fully rested and batteries re-charged ..... ready for our next adventure!
Brilliant video Dave. Love watching your great videos, excellent commentary and imagine the delight when I see you are now in my home village! Fantastic walks around here. Keep up the great work Dave.
Thank you Justin & indeed thanks for watching.
Counting the counties on this one!! I also thought Fiver seemed a bit nonplussed by the little drone. He did a grand job standing in for Logan apart from falling down on the crisp consumption. He even managed a dog dip! Well done both of you. Enjoyed the historical info. I think it was definitely a different stone to the one in the archive photos.
Thanks Jean. Yes, I wasn't 100% sure about the stone!
Good to meet Fiver at last. I hope Logan wasn't too put out st being left at home.
I think that Logan would have been annoyed out missing out on crisps at the end!
Another enjoyable video as we know this area quite well and enjoy your historical input (we're just up the road from there in Wincanton). Nice to see Fiver out and about with you this time. I see you mentioned in comments a Somerset walk coming soon - we look forward to that!
Thank you Pauline. Yes, a "Somerset" walk is coming out this Friday!
That was one of my regular walks when l lived in Bourton. Happy times.
What a lovely area to have as "local" walk.
So nice to see Fiver furbaby he’s so adorable, beautiful surroundings in Bourton and great history stories 😊
Fiver is a good boy and he really enjoyed his outing!
Aww thank you and Fiver for this lovely walk. You had a magnficent day for it, as well. Cheers!
Thank you Yvonne. Yes we were lucky with the weather that day.
Lovely I hopefully will watch tonight. Logan with his feet up
Logan certainly missed out on the crisps on this walk!
Lovely video, Dave and Fiver. I thought Fiver would get in the stream for a paddle. And why not? Does he do Whippet zoomies, or is that reserved for Logan. That piece about the mill was interesting. I had no idea of their history.
Thanks Lionel. Fiver isn't as used to water as Logan but he is happy to paddle in shallow streams! He does "zoomies" but I prefer to let him do those in "enclosed" areas and there wasn't really an opportunity to film that in this particular video. He loves coming out with me in Canicross trail races (between 5KM & 10KM) - we compete in 5 or 6 of those each Winter.
Thank you Dave - it was nice to see Fiver again. Do you ever take all the dogs out for a walk together? I expect it would be too much to manage while you're filming. I used to have two and sometimes felt that they were taking me for a walk!
Yes, I usually take them out for a "normal" walk together. Filming with ore than one would be a challenge though!
So Logan gets a day off after a long walk, but not poor old Dave. Seems hardly fair. Nice to meet Fiver though!
Oh well - it keeps me fit (I think!)
It’s not often I’m the first to comment on one of your walks. The drone is certainly an effective tool in your video presentations Dave. Young Fiver wasn’t so certain about it at one point though. A lovely walk though.
Thank you Mark. Yes, it was the first time that Fiver had met the HoverAir X1 (I think he thought it was a huge flying insect!) and he made sure he kept am eye on it early on. He soon got used to it though!
@@DaveFord well, we both think it’s added an extra depth to your walks.
Usual excellent stuff Dave, very enjoyable. Is Fiver not so good off the lead? I didn't notice him "freewheelin'" once 🙂. Thanks for taking us through three counties, is this a Somerset first (of many?)?
Thank you. Fiver was able to go "off lead" on a couple of sections (in fairly enclosed areas) but I didn't film him. He is still a bit young & experienced and as I did not know the area that well, I kept him on the lead more often that I would have done with Logan. I hope to film a bit more in Somerset - indeed there is a "Somerset" video coming out very soon!
