  • Bill and I spent over a month testing out the Wescott Eyelighter. This tool is amazing for the studio it really helps elevate the quality of headshot that you can take. The way you can get an amazing catch light on your subjects eyes really helps make them pop. If you're looking for more even and softer light the Eyelighter does amazing job with this. I believe this is a tool I will buy because after using it for a month it really helped with my work flow in studio.

That guy creeped the crap out of that poor girl when he rubbed her hair without asking. Also why does he need to stand so close while behind her. Creepy all around.

I was looking for things to do in this tutorial instead I saw what not to do. A great example of having a lot of gear and not knowing how to use it. These photo examples are trash. Over touched up photos.

Thank you for the video, any video tutorial helps even to the most advanced photographer. Although, please I suggest to educate yourself with the gear you are using. Westcott didn't made the Eyelighter reflector, the inventor of the Eyelighter is Larry Peters from Ohio, I bought my first eye lighter from him, and you guys should know that its not 30 inches from the subject face but 32 inches, 32 inches is the perfect distance. It format a triangle, Face-Eyelighter-Beauty Dish,... 32 inches from each other. Please keep learning before teaching. Much Love!

Is the eyelighter good for a on location headshot photographer or would I be better off using a standard reflector?

All that nice gear, but no light meter to be found. And you wonder why your light is off....

Looks like a $2.00 dollar white card from Walmart may do the same thing. Might be better if you showed examples of pictures side by side with and without. I am not sure the picture with the eye lighter turned out that great.

Sorry guys, you really missed the boat on this one. Your kicker is hitting her nose, which is very unflattering.
Your main light is supposed to provide the light for the Eyelighter, not the hair light. This is why your shot without is underexposed. A more true test would have had you open your aperture to re-balance the exposure.
Other people commented on your shooting so loose that you are wasting pixels. With a black background you could always expand it in post, but that has nothing to do with the light test.

💥✨💥 8:36 I am not at all pleased with this lighting setup. That strip overhead makes it look like the model is being shot in the dentists office standing under a row of fluorescent lights in a drop ceiling. Not much has changed at 9:03

Today, i don´t know, why youtube is suggesting this video for me, but i will give you a comment:
The placement and the angle from the beauty dish is simply wrong. This reflector should be more closeup at a distance, which should be nearly similar like his diameter...and at an angle of 30° - 45° downwards with the center pointed to the head. The deflectorplate from a beauty dish is there, to preventing a hot spot on your subject...with an other angle like on this setup, the flashbulb will make a hotspot like a regular reflector. And with that angle, the Eyelighter would also be able to reflect light from the beauty dish like from a clamshell setup. Remember: Angle of incidence = angle of reflection.
Also with the diffuser "showercap" on the beauty dish, this lightshaper isn´t a beauty dish anymore. You will lose the additional contrast, which you did pay with buying this lightshaper. So you also could use straight forwards a softbox.
Second mistake: the position and angle from the overhead softbox. This softbox has to show way more backwards/down and should only touch the shoulders and head with the feathered light from the edge from this lightshaper. This softbox shouldn´t add light on the Eyelighter, like on this setup. this softbox should only seperate the contours from the body from the background .
Third mistake: the position and angle from the hairlight on the left side from this setup. This softbox should also only touch the contour from the body, and not the nose.
4th mistake: i don´t think, that you fully understand the use from a grid, otherwise, you wouldn´t have light from the two softboxes, which are behind that model, on bodyparts on the frontside (on the nose and nearly on the forhead). On this setup, this should be the job from the beauty dish alone. Only exception: the Eyelighter reflector. I guess, you probably only didn´t want the softboxes to light up the dark background, but...that´s nothing you couldn´t handle with some black cardboards, cutters or V-Flats. And with a closer beauty dish, you would already create a darker background.

Everyone has their own style, I get that, but this is way over lit. And not really a good way to "compare" the eye lighter. For one, chances are you would not use the Beauty Dish alone. You'd have either a white or silver somewhat large reflector underneath to create a clamshell type light set up. Or maybe even a fill light. I would have like to have seen you just replacing it with a large round reflector to show how it's different from something a lot cheaper to see if it's worth the investment. I don't believe it is. I see many use an eye lighter type reflector but I don't see the need. It's big. Takes a while to assemble. I have a stand with a reflector holder attached. I pop out my 36" or so round reflector, connect it to the holder and place it underneath my subjects face around sternum level. I use a total of two lights. I use a 44" Octa for my main and a medium strip box for a kicker/hair light on the opposite side. And a large round reflector underneath. Done. Beautiful results. Shadows are not bad things. They give shape and contour to the subject.
