  • Mark Ruffalo is one of the "good guys" in the film world. A humanitarian and a Hulk... and this season, the elder brother of a pair of world class wrestlers drawn into the world of John Dupont and his wealth in Foxcatcher. He talks about the effect of Hulk on his life, his plans for the future, and the very difficult work of bringing his performance to life for this film with David Poland.

Mark Ruffalo was a perfect casting choice for this movie. I wrestled for about ten years, from early grammar school all the way through High School. Right in the opening scene, when Ruffalo starts hitting duck unders, I could tell that this was not his first time on a wrestling mat. His set ups and shots were crisp and on point. His position also looked very natural.
All this is just my way of saying that he did a great job.

Agreed and thought very similar to you when I was watching. I think Ruffalo is one of my favorites anyway, and very different from other actors. This was a special project to get right. It's a compliment both ways; Mark playing Dave and us thinking he got it right, because Dave Schultz, in my book, was one of the greatest athletes and gentlemen of sports. Both Schultz brothers were beasts on the mat. Studying them at the Goodwill games in Russia helped me make huge gains in wrestling. The brothers didn't have the fame and fortune of some of today's athletes in the big money sports with multi-million dollar contracts and still treating others terribly, yet many people out there knew how great they were and this movie is important.

Glad he was nominated. Wonderfully restrained performance.

Can't wait for this movie. I remember when this happened and all the FoxCatcher rumors floating about in high school.

Sort of strange, that the movie wasn't about what the 1% does to rest of us, as that seemed to be the main theme of the picture - it sure felt that way to me; so it makes it all the more frustrating that Dave's story wasn't examined more. He had far more to do with DuPont, than Mark (Schultz) did, and I completely agree with Ruffalo's theory of what Dave was to DuPont. Ruffalo shouldn't have had to explain that Dave treated DuPont with (probably) more kindness and patience than anyone did, it should've been evident in the film. Frankly, it works better as political commentary, than character study, though I do admire the film and the performances very much. Extremely proud of Ruffalo - been following his work for 15 years - just wish all these great directors he's worked with would give him more screen time.
