Dude... not here to be a dark cloud or anything, what someone sees and feels is something to be respected, and I do.....but my guess is that he's just into the song at the time. I only guess that way because he's made that same face at other times on different songs.

This was the first time Orion was ever played live, the last time it was played (not live) was Cliffs funeral, and they would ALL know that in this video. I can imagine this would've been an extremely emotional piece to play live for the first time

Thank God that Rob became the replacement for Newstead.. Because of Rob style of playing allows them to play all the old material like this proper. Jason using a pick on this would never had worked.

@9Martel9 He changed his guitar. You'll notice at times he plays around with his input jack before it, then when it gets to that lead part before the solo he changes guitar just in time for the solo.
Between 2:39 and 2:55 Kirk switched guitars. \m/

Cliff never played the song live, and Metallica never played it until the Rock Am Ring festival, when they played the entire album to mark the 20th anniversary of its release.
I don't think they could've played it this well with jason. No offense to Newsted, but Rob's a much better bassist and he nailed this.
Orion is a song to play with fingerstyle, Jason would probably don't know how play that. But he stills being my favorite bassist.
Orion is not such a complicated song to play it being Metallica-level bassist. If Jason had a permission to do that, he would surely nail that, he performed much more complicated parts during his solos on shows, it would have sounded different, but not worse
I got to play this as a bassist on my local musicschool fest with a band. I dedicated my performance to cliff and i hope i did him justice. This is not a song its a hymn

I noticed that in 2:58 Kirk changed his guitar.
His other guitar wasn’t working. James turned on flanger/phaser to sound like 2 guitars.
It’s 2023 and I was the one with the flare! Not really but who’s still here in 2023!!

they were probably nervous.... this isn't the best performance of the song by far. only rob did a great job on it. lars doesn't groove on this, kirk messed up the solos and james's guitar seems to be detuned...
