- An extended weekend getaway found us in Charleston, SC and finally Magnolia Plantation for some sight seeing with just enough time for some quick plein air. So much to see and paint. Sometimes it's best to take it all in, get some pictures and just capture some quick essentials in a sketch to finish later. #vlog #watercolor #pleinair #landscape

I went back to your video at Magnolia Plantation. What a great memory. Forgot how long I have been watching you. Loved it even back then! ❤️
Another lovely tree and ROLL TIDE 👍
Roll Tide!
Peacock.... “ Paint me!”
Very restful! Love the twisting trunk of the oak.
I enjoyed your plein air. For me, I also enjoy being in the open air, but I used to paint in oil, but I’m just starting out with watercolors. Plein airs with watercolors, for some reason, I like more.
Just imagine what history those trees have seen ....what majestic trees you were able to paint could you guestamte how old you think those tress were.??? The color of the Spanish moss seemed so right on point.....awesome painting.. thankyou for sharing your experience that day for us......😷🖐🎨
Glad you had a great time.🎂🥂
Beautiful video and art - thanks very much.
Beautiful portait of the tree! I love your plein air videos so much. 😍
Very inspiring. Thanks Steve.
Beautiful painting in a beautiful setting!
To avoid peacocks use force (Jedi teaching).... Thank you very much for the fantastic video!
LOL! My stare down did seem to work. I think he just figured I had food.
I grew up in NYC and moved to SC in my mid 20s. I spent nearly two decades living in Greenville and Columbia. We also traveled to Charleston a few times. Great hospital down there. We recently had to move to Charlotte NC for work and I can truly feel the difference between the two states. Sorry if this this offends anyone, but South Carolina is the _real_ Carolina. No contest. It’s beautiful and peaceful. Too bad the jobs don’t pay as well.
I'm trying to recall his name, but it eludes me. There was a famous impressionist who painted in the studio. Which was a massive no no at the time. He would do quick sketches in the field, bring them back to the studio and complete great expansive works indoors. Pissed everyone off at the time.
Love how you paint trees Steve, the darks that you added at 9:28 just make the painting pop. Your reaction to the peacock 🦚 was hilarious, love how your wife was much more interested in filming you rather than helping you 🤣🤣
Absolutely gorgeous final painting ❤️
This is very peaceful 😇great content
Thank you for sharing .
Thank you very much.
Thank very much for sharing your knowledge and for the valuable teachings. I'd like to tell this: Last nicht I dreamt that I met you and told you that nobody paints trees like you, that is very true. This morning I watched this demonstration and there you were painting this wonderful tree. All the best to you and your wife.
Quite an impressive painting.
Happiest belated birthday. Your film has such great images. I wondered how you’d do the Spanish moss. And you did. Of course. ☺️
Thank you for sharing.
Gorgeous!
Beautiful work I loved Charleston and those wonderful trees certainly different from the gum trees here in Tasmania thank you for sharing
So beautiful!
Brilliant
Wow
I was out painting yesterday and the geese on the pond were feeling randy. They were a squawking lot and flew by my head a couple times chasing off their competition. I only ducked in panic once.....
Wow, what a stunning painting! Magnificent portrayal of a majestic tree. It was indeed a very special and beautiful outing. Thank you for taking us with you! Blessings
My pleasure!
Beautiful I love it.
Water oaks and cypress two of my favorite southern things and the abundance of birds. Thanks for the trip.
I loved watching this - painting live, on location is not something I do anywhere near enough of! Thanks for the inspiration, as always! 👍🙂
That was beautiful, the video, all the images (stunningly beautiful place!) and the fabulous painting, thank you so much for sharing. It’s also really inspiring for me personally as I’m trying to overcome the fear of painting outdoors, not sure if it’s fear of not doing a nice job, a bit of shyness of people looking at you.. or even just the fear of starting that new (very nice, 100% cotton and therefore not cheap) sketchbook with a rubbish sketch... but as I said, seeing this makes me wanna grab my stuff and get out there and start painting! Thanks again 🙏😊
Your painting is beautiful. Thanks for taking us along on your plein air day. I always enjoy the travelogues.
Love this! It’s beautiful
Love Charleston, beautiful city and fantastic low country food. I’m so happy to see how you did that live oak and Spanish moss. We have them here in Wilmington, NC as well, and now I want to go to our beautiful Airlee Gardens, where one just like yours is prominent.
Now you are in my country! those fabulous, moss-trimmed oaks. So homesick for Southern Manners! Thanks
Very beutyful painting Master 🙏🏻❤️Big Hello from Italian Artist
Thank you as always for sharing. The one and only time we went to Charleston this is where we visited right before lockdown last spring break. It was nice to see it again through your eyes. Loved hearing that you often don’t finish things in the field and bring them home to refine with photos. Loved this study...painting..
Stunning 😍
Happy belated birthday!
I always love your vids. They are so well done, informational and so well produced with the music and all.
I love how you add the greenery by rolling the brush, very helpful!
This is fabulous 💖
What a great plein air adventure! Charleston is such a special place. I liked your use of gouache for spanish moss. Having attempted to paint the moss in w/c with mixed success, maybe your approach can be more realistic.
Thanks, Steve, for allowing us to watch your creative mind taking over.
Grand!
Oh thank you for taking us along on your R n R weekend! Happy Birthday!! I've missed you taking us with you on your plein aire ventures. Covid probably played a part in all that. You gave us a chance to see new places and how you set up and what you encounter. The peacock was exciting, glad it wasn't a gaggle of geese with their charging and hissing! You were so calm and serene and I could just feel the invisible under current of your wife giggling and wondering what all might occur. Please thank her too for her gift because we all got to enjoy it too.
Planning a plein aire with the painters in the family this summer at Bryce Canyon and hope we come away with something lovely and choice memories as well. Thanks for sharing Steve.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! Turned out great.
What a beautiful tree. Yes I looked up resurrection ferns. Amazing plant. I am glad you had a wonderful birthday.
Gorgeous and happy belated birthday!
What a Perfect Day. And may you have many, many more
I to have a love of trees and they never cease to amaze me. Thank you for reminding me of all the wonderful times I had exploring the low lands of SC. Really hated having to move from SC. Wonderful state! This just makes me more excited for my next visit. Wonderful demo, thank you!
Thanks for sharing! There are a lot of live oaks where I live covered with Spanish moss. It's beautiful and i am so glad to see how you painted it. Thank you.
Happy birthday, it looks like you had a good one. What better than to spend time with your wife and relax and enjoy painting. Very nice painting I learn so much from you and enjoy learning and trying, thank you. Mike
What a beautiful venue. Oh, my, those trees! Glad you had such a relaxing time, and beautiful painting. The Spanish moss is the cherry on top
Thanks Kelly. Love the Spanish moss. It reminds me of my childhood vacations in Florida to visit my grandparents, so I always associate it with leisure and relaxation.
@@mindofwatercolor I was wondering if it was Florida. I watch Some Eagle nests in FL and they have that moss
Such a relaxing watch, your painting looks wonderful and I can feel the roughness of the bark in your painting. Thanks for sharing.
That was wonderful! Thanks for sharing your birthday present with us. :)
You bet!
Great video Steve. You are inspiring me to do some plein air
I've been there! I made friends with a peacock too. I'm pretty sure he loves me and can't wait for me to come back. :). Great place for inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful vlog, nice pictures and amazing painting ! Thanks for sharing
Oh, Steve. You and your trees are such a wonder. And the live oak is one of the best. My yard has a huge one that my studio window looks out on, and it is full of Spanish moss and resurrection fern. You did such a beautiful job painting that one. I haven't painted one in a while, but I will begin now. Thanks, and Happy Birthday!
I used to live there as a teenager. I loved it and miss it a lot. Being an Air Force brat we got stationed in Florida, but the perks of military life was traveling to so many interesting places. Charleston was a painters paradise with all it's beauty and charm. Lucky you for getting to spend some time there. Enjoy ! :) Happy Birthday ! {best present ever}
Beautiful. 😊
Great video and a wonderful painting. Thank you for sharing your day out with us, it was like we were there with you. 🙂
Ganz wunderbar. Vielen Dank für das schöne Video. Grüße aus Deutschland von Conny
The intro to this video was just beautiful!! Thank you for taking us on a journey.
What a gorgeous place! I was so eager to see how you tackled the moss. I am sure glad your wife was there to document the peacock scene....I am sure he wanted to check out your work too 😍
Thanks for taking us along. Happy Birthday 🎈🎉🎂
Happy Birthday! This was great, couldn’t wait to see how you handled the moss. Most of my experience with Spanish moss has been Hobby Lobby... Just kidding, Mine has been from Louisiana. Many cousins down there. Believe it or not I have cousins in Baton Rouge and their childhood home was across from a cemetery loaded with large trees tons of moss. Often at night it would have foggy areas and all kinds of animal sounds. So creepy. They never went in it because the mosquitoes would have you for dinner. Thanks for sharing your trip and follow up.
those mosquitos didn't know how to fly across the street?
Happy birthday!
♥
I live here in Charleston! What a surprise! Thank you. You should try Middleton Plantation. It’s as beautiful. But oh so different.
Yes, have been there too. Boone Hall and Drayton Hall also. Love them all!
So beautiful there, I would have a hard time deciding what to paint! You captured the tree and moss beautifully! Hope to go Charelston again this summer.
Great weekend to be in Charleston it looks like you went to the swamp garden at Magnolia --my favorite place to take photos and i would love to paint there I was in Chapin taking a plein air plain and simple workshop with Russell Jewell from up around your area (Easley i think Thanks for sharing your fun weekend Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday! and thank you for the beautiful painting, what a wonderful tree with the Spanish moss
Hope you come back to Magnolia Plantation soon, lots more to paint! 🎨
OMGosh so beautiful!! Do you have a video on how to make your Plein Air pallet? Very cool thank you for sharing!!
Yes I do!. The easel in this video is modified from the original tutorial to make it smaller so the original tutorial doesn't have the modifications. But I have videos explaining both.

The peacock wanted a portrait done lol
I want you to know that I truly appreciate the way you painted the Spanish moss. I've seen several interpretations and yours is the most believable! I knew that you would paint the moss with gouache. Thank you for focusing on the Live Oak. I admire their enormous trunks and outstretched branches. The leaves on the two large Live Oaks, across from me, actually do turn brown and most, but not all, fall off during the winter months. The southern winds sweep thousands of leaves into my yard and flowering plant areas. I don't mind and I suppose the extra "leaf mulch" is good for my plants. Thanks, Steve, for sharing the beautiful video and your magnificent painting.
Loved this, Steve! Like you, my dad seldom finished a painting in the field. When we traveled the country camping, he had "starts" on many things. He'd often work on them through the winter. Back then, his photos were slides. Never knew for sure if he'd get a photo of exactly what he wanted, so he'd buy a lot of postcards just in case. (peacocks can be MEAN!)
Nature is so stunning. Thank you for this beautiful and inspiring video! 🙂
Sure hope I’ll be able to paint this some day. Not this good yet
Happy Birthday! Sounds like you had a wonderful time! The picture is beautiful. 😊 Thank you for sharing.
TELL THE WIFE I’m a corm cvm sheep farmer that’s spins and dyes. now Playing with water color too
Each shot at the start has a great composition! Love it!
That was beautiful. My ancestors are from Charleston but I never had opportunity to see it. Thank you for bring it part of it to me.
This is beautifully done. I love this
Opening shot: Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip...
Happy birthday Steve, best of wishes to you 😁 that location looks incredibly beautiful and I'm happy you were able to do some plein air
This place is so incredibly beautiful! What a fun, relaxing video. Happy birthday! 🥳
Thank you so much! I’ve been waiting for a live oak!!! Especially with Spanish moss. And yes everyone, google resurrection fern.
This was extremely relaxing to watch. Thank you for the wonderful painting and the break in daily life I desperately needed. :)
Relaxing and beautiful video. Love your work. Been following you for years!
Wonderful video.. thank you. I would love to know which colours you used for mixing, particularly the trunk.
What a beautiful painting, Steve! It was lovely to see the process, peacock and all! Wonderful location and one I hope to visit once our travel restrictions (and lockdown) here in Canada are lifted. I’m a new subscriber and am so very inspired by your videos. Happy Birthday!!
This is amazing! Everytime I use watercolors, things get out of hand :D
What brand watercolors would/do you use in very hot and humid weather for plain air? Loved this video and the beautiful oak!
Schminke, Sennelier, and Daniel Smith are all great choice and on my plein air palettes.
Your finished piece is beautiful. So, when taking reference photos it is not necessarily getting a print quality image, it it is more about jus5 getting an image for shape and lighting and sometimes exaggeration helps define that (i.e. a daylight image that looks a bit too bright for photo quality)? I hope that makes sense, I was having a hard time putting it into words.
Yes, thats right. I do try to get good light moods that enhance contrast. The earlier overcast state was not ideal but the sun lit version later gave me good reference options.
Wow that's wonderful. I've been wondering how to paint the Spanish Moss. We were at the Magnolia several years ago and loved it. Have you ever done any scenes from the city?
Not too many no. I'm not much of an urban painter.
@@mindofwatercolor I love your trees. I'm here in Fl and going to try your technique
Steve, Loved this! Looks like you had a travel flat in the clip next to your painting. What kind is it? I've been looking everywhere for a travel flat. Thank you. Great beginning to give us a sense of the place
Are you referring to my paint palette. Not sure what a travel flat is.
@@mindofwatercolor The brush with the white handle. It looks like a flat, is it one? I would love to find a flat brush in a travel case style. :)
