    I drive a 60HP Up. It may be slow as hell but it holds corners really well and is superbly fun to drive. I may get the GTI one day, which I suspect pushes the envelope of what the Up chassis can actually handle towards the edge. The lower powered models don’t and you can throw them into corners at alarming speeds while still nailing the throttle.

    Hp loss over time can be very much minimized and considering that this was a pretty mint condition golf 2, im sure it was still rocking like 110.
    I think you people underestimate what a 5 speed vs a 6 speed can do, not even considering that the golf pumps out about 150 vs the up!'s 200 nm of torque.
    Now, technically this is the lowest version of the golf 2 gti, the 1.8 8v, vs the highest version of the up. If we were to use the golf 2 gti 16v or g60, that would have looked very different.
    But i think its more about the "does the up gti really compare to an oldschool gti like the manufacturer says"
    And having driven both myself, i can safely say: fuck yes, the up gti is a blast

    The 8v Mk2 Golf had 112 bhp (114 lbft), not 115. It was never a rocket ship even when new. However, on this video the Golf's launch was weak, looked like it bogged down, or the driver was being gentle - and given that it only had 1000 miles on it, I suspect it was rather tight. It may have been short shifted a little too - difficult to tell. 8v redline was 6,500 rpm or thereabouts. I suspect a more enthusiastic driver and a car with circa 60k miles on it would have given the Up a little more competition. That said, it's unlikely VW would want a 30 year old Golf to show up their current car, so a little creative directing was probably in play to make the Golf look worthy, but ultimately not quite so quick. ;) As comments below would attest, a 16v Golf of that era, or even one of the early K-Jetronic versions of the 8v (rather than this 'softer' digifant injected version) would have eaten the Up.

      Renault 5 Turbo & Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi were the motors to have for outright speed. The Golf MK2 falls about mid way between the 1.6 and 1.9 205 GTi's. The 1.6 would have put in about the same performance as this MK2 with a good driver.
      The start off the line in this video was poor, the MK2 driver backed off after dumping the clutch where if he'd have kept it pinned it wouldn't have lost that much momentum from wheelspin.

  • @1SaG
    @1SaG Před 4 lety +1

    Given the Mk II was a very late model, I'd say it most probably had a cat. And with a cat, that model produced 107 PS (non cat version was 112 PS).
    The weight issue is pretty interesting - although I would hazard a guess that a late Mk II like that was probably over a ton - especially a posh version like the one used here with lots of options.
    I did drive a 1988 Mk II GTI back in the late 80s/early 90s and even back then it didn't feel overwhelmingly quick. It was adequate for the time, but compared to a Kadett/Astra GSI 16V, a Mk II GTI 16V or even a MK I GTI it was a little underwhelming.
