  • History Afloat: 1906-built Sailing Barge Cambria passing Harwich, Friday 12 July 2024
When she was built, there were said to be around 4,000 sailing barges at work - but now around 30 still survive.
Cambria sails are the mainsail and topsail aft of the mast, and the foresail, jib and jib topsail or staysail forward. The topsail was often used on its own, as it was high enough to gather some breeze among tall buildings and ships when in docks.
Barges were the largest sailing vessels ever crewed by two men - or one man and a boy.
