  • Nigel Calder explains how battery usage on a boat differs from the lab and how to increase the lifespan of lead-acid batteries to 5-10 years.

Great video as always. One nitpick with Nigel saying if your batteries don't last 5-10 years you're doing something wrong. It's not about years, it's about cycles. Some boaters do almost no cycles in a year while some do close to 365.
So I don't think it's fair to say using up a battery before 5 years is doing something wrong. If you do 300 days at anchor that could be 1500 cycles in 5 years, which is way beyond the AGM lifetime of 400 cycles of 80% discharge or even 1500 cycles at 30% shown in this video (considering that real life will have some psoc cycling, not laboratory cycles).
Sometimes lead-acid batteries fail before 5 years because they were used heavily - that's not a premature failure, that's what the batteries were designed to do.

This is a good point! Nigel was referring to the "average boater". If you really spend your time at anchor year round, your batteries may indeed reach their designed cycle life in less than 5 years. - Jan

Yes. Is it possible to get this nigel altinator in 24volt??

@@eivindlindefjell5602 You are probably referring to the "Integrel" System? This is unfortunately only available in 48V. But there are some other really good alternators on the market that come in 24 and 12 Volt variations. Check out oceanplanetenergy.com/, they have a wide selection and offer really good advice and service!

Hi guys, excellent content thanks for sharing that with us, maybe someone could give me an opinion, I have a 200ah agm about 3 years old it was working ok until few weeks ago, I noticed it is now charging only at 13.0v when get close to fully charged goes up to 13.4 it's not the charging devices, it does the same no matter the charging source, alternator, solar or battery charger. Is it some fault in some cell?like getting some high internal resistance? I think the problem was caused by mi alternator, unfortunately it is a stock alternator with a internal regulator which I don't think is working properly, it keeps the voltage too high for too long, so I guess that what caused the issue, it only happened now because we just did a 2000nm crossing and used the engine quite a lot. Does all that makes sense?

This sounds like it is caused by the charging sources than the batteries. I it possible that these lower voltages occured at times with higher temperatures? Some chargers (like Victron) do adjust their float voltage with temperature. If it's hot, the voltage is lower than if it's cold. Check with the manufacturer if this is the case with your charging device. By the way, much more important for battery health is the absorption voltage, which should be about 14.4V (or even higher, depending on the recommendation of your battery manufacturer...) You can learn more about this in our Boat Electrics 101 course. - Jan
