Definitely the Mercedes C-Class is the most offensive since there's no exhaust gases flowing through it. That's like putting exhaust tips on a Tesla.

Agreed, they are nailing most of the design aspects lately (imo) but the fake exhaust tips are terrible and for their price they can do so much better

owo I totally agree with you, the rear of the new benzes looks retarded, but the front end is spot on. We have a 2014 E220D and i really think they nailed the design on that one (except for those nasty fake exhaust tips), but 2016 -> they just f*cked up the rear end imo.

I’m glad BMW still puts real exhaust tips on the M5! They don’t look as flashy as they could but at least they aren’t fake

Many cars are designed with exhaust gaskets close to the exhaust manifolds that choke the gas flow down to lower the emissions output. I discovered this to be the case with most 80s U.S. vehicles. This is one of the reasons why headers is such a huge improvement over stock manifolds. I'm sure something similar is still going on. The numbers for my exhaust manifold are as follows. 2.25" to a 1.75" doughnut style gasket and back out to 2.25".
You have the 2010 2SS Camaro with the ground effects package, it looked like they had to cut the tips to put the rear bumper on with the grey rectangles that were where the exhaust came out that was part of the bumper which you could see the ground through

I'm guessing the fake tips are less likely to get covered in soot than if they were properly connected though...? I mean that is an advantage of it I guess. My Leon FR MK2 has proper pipes, but the chrome is always black from the engine exhaust. I've tried keeping on top of that but they get dirty so fast it just isn't worth it.

FYI They have to do that because metal expands when hot. Full exhaust can move up to.25 inch therefore burning or melting the plastic bumpers.
Current-gen Camry XSE and XSE V6. Quad exhaust tips but only one exhaust tip from each side of the car is actually functional. The other is blocked off. At least, that's what it looked like the other day when I was behind one in traffic. Also, with the current Lexus IS series, they've got these lopsided rectangle exhaust tips that look pretty good but just protect the actual tailpipe from getting squished into funny shapes. Sooo pre-squished I guess?

Extending a bigger exhaust tipe past a smaller actual exhaust , actually has a purpose in sound, it can reduce exhaust drone at specific Rpm.
Great video and all but you forgot to mention the reason behind these design choices...
Exhaust systems are designed to bend and rattle under stress conditions on the chassis (e.g. speed bumps or fast turns) the 'fake' tips are so the real exhaust system can sway freely whilst the disconnected bumper tips maintain a flush and solid look for drivers behind these cars. It's an engineering decision not a cost reduction decision.

The Land Rover Freelander 2 had an optional big oval thing but the actual exhaust went through it vertically and pointed towards the ground... There was a visible air gap around the vertical pipe in the horizontal oval.. Yuck

most of these are done for air-flow under the car and the design of the exhaust coming out of the plastic bumper to prevent melting of the bumper. only few example of cheaper model or diesel still has the chrome tip trim in order to save cost on molding a new lower diffuser.
Our neighbor's VW Passat TDI Bi-Turbo has it. And by the way, the most expensive Octavia is not vRS, because it is Octavia Laurin & Klement.

The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer (opc line) has the most ridiculous fake exhaust setup I‘ve ever seen, look it up it is absolutly bananas.
What annoys me more is the tuning of exhausts. It used to be that the sounds your car made were necessary to get the car moving. Nowadays they actually change the exhaust sound to make it sound sporty (worst case is in my dad's 308 which pipes fake exhaust noise through the audio system when he uses the sport button). Our own Abarth 124 is guilty too: it may not have a fake exhaust noise, but it sounds like 1.4 where the silencer has fallen off. I doubt that is all necessary to make it go faster....
The lamborghini lp640 has two pathetic looking pipes running into its huge (fake) central exhaust. It is hard to miss when you are standing right behind one..
