Is there an optimal daily dose of vitamin D for immune function? | Roger Seheult

  • Vitamin D's recommended daily allowance was established based on its role in bone metabolism. It remains unknown whether these levels are sufficient for optimal immunological functioning. A large meta-analysis of 32 studies, spanning nearly 50 years, suggests that 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below 30 ng/mL are associated with a higher risk of death from all causes. In the context of COVID-19, a large associative study suggested that lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D are strongly associated with higher SARS-CoV-2 test positivity rates. In this clip, Dr. Roger Seheult and Dr. Rhonda Patrick discuss how to assess vitamin D requirements and its toxicity potential.

No matter how much vitamin D you take, you must test for 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels. I take 20,000 IU of Vitamin D with K2 per day and my levels are between 60 and 90, perfect for me but would not be appropriate for someone else. Remember, if you don't test, you don't know! Supplemented with 10k units a day for a year, through my treatments just to get back into "optimal" range. I sure wish I had this information 7 years ago, pisses me off that so many doctors even refuse to run a test.

I learned many years ago that I don’t get cold or flu when my Vitamin D levels approach 60. I need 10,000 IU to maintain this level. But before mega-dosing, it’s worth asking your doctor to get a blood test (in the US, you can also order your own labs from Quest or Labcorp through online middle men). Based on test results and other information, you can use online calculators to determine how much vitamin D you need to take to reach the 50’s. There’s even a new calculator that will give you a “loading dose” to quickly bring your levels up in a week or two (based on the 30 day half life of Vitamin D, it usually takes 3 months to reach your target blood levels).

One of the reasons why it goes down over time is that it initially boosts your blood quickly, which is why you can take 50,000 or 100,000 once a week for a month and get good tests, but further research shows it goes down because it eventually needs to store the excess and that is where the fat comes into play. So it would make sense depending on the individual that initially they show 150ng and 1 or 2 years later at that same dose may stabalize to 70-80ng as it begins to fill up the tank so to speak being your fat cells. There's no way to calculate how much D3 is in your fat cells so blood levels only tell you so far, but it's safe to say if you are at 60-80ng on a consistent basis it's slowly going to build them all up over a long period of time.

I have been learning about vitamin d due to Covid but then I discovered the role that it plays in immunity and the possible linkage to other diseases. I have had psoriasis for 30 plus years. Psoriasis is sometimes treated with UV therapy which in my opinion points to a role for vitamin d in it’s pathology. I began to suspect that I have some issue with vitamin d metabolism. I first suspected a problem with my vitamin d receptor called vitamin d resistance. I have so far been unable to verify it with measurements because I have encountered resistance within the health profession to even measuring vitamin d levels. I also suspect that vitamin d may have a role in high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and even Alzheimer’s. I have been collecting studies that support this idea. It seems that it could be evolutionary in that in northern climates it may have been an advantage to store fat in the winter. I admit that I am not a doctor and have no expertise only google. At any rate, supplementation with vitamin d seemed to improve my psoriasis.

@@WisdomThroughGod As I am not a doctor, I started this after watching a video by a chiropractor where the theory was that there is a broken feedback loop in that vitamin d is supposed to act as a negative signal to the immune system. I may have inherited, or acquired, a problem with vitamin d metabolism called vitamin d resistance. I have yet to prove or disprove this. The chiropractor recommended 45,000 i.u.s of vitamin d as well as TUDCA 1500 mg. also Cod liver Oil. I started using TUDCA and only 1000 i.u.s of vitamin d ( I was too nervous to go higher without measurement ). After one bottle of TUDCA, my skin stopped flaking. This was before I could even see a dermatologist. I had psoriasis covering a large part of my body and I shed skin everywhere. After I started using cremes, the red scales are gone but cremes never worked before. I did eventually go to 20,000 i.u.s but that was before measurement. When I finally got a blood test I had 104,000 vitamin d3 and normal parathyroid so I cut back on vitamin d to 5000 - 10,000. The biggest mistake I made was starting before measuring vitamin d levels.

Beside the logarithmic point, I am interested in why that is the case. Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, your body can't just flush excess D3 out in urin. So if I take 20k IU instead of 1k IU. Is the body going into overdrive mode and using as much Vitamin D as possible?
In my head it should go the other way around when you have a deficit, when only 1k IU comes in your body should use most of it fast but when 20k IU comes your body should only use part of it directly and the rest should elevate your D3 level.

During exposure to sunlight cholesterol is needed in our skin to absorb UV B radiation to convert to Vitamin D3. The body then depends on Magnesium to convert vitamin D into its active form within the body. Magnesium helps Vitamin D bind to its target proteins, as well as helping the liver and the kidneys to metabolize Vitamin D. Unfortunately 70% and more of the population is very deficient in Vitamin D due to “low cholesterol levels” in the body and skin, therefore sunlight will not help to manufacture vitamin D thru the skin no matter how much you are exposed. Also most of the population doesn’t supplement Vitamin D, or eat enough mushrooms, etc to achieve proper levels. Same is true with Magnesium. Most of the population doesn’t get enough Mg in the diet , nor supplementation unfortunately. No matter how much sun you expose yourself to, without 7-dehydrocholesterol in our skin UV B will not be absorbed to covert to Vit D, and if then will not metabolize without proper levels of Magnesium in our body. We can supplement with D3 and D2 together but important to supplement with Mag also. I supp 500-700 mg of Magnessium, and about 4500 of Potassium per day, by way of diet or supplement. Thank you again for all your excellent reviews and interviews.
