SCALED AND ICY - Twenty One Pilots | FULL ALBUM REACTION ψ

- Welcome to SCALED AND ICY ψ
This is, yet again, another bittersweet moment. On one hand, I'm so excited that Twenty One Pilots has released new music for us to enjoy. On the other, the excitement and anticipation for the album's release has concluded. Nothing matches the excitement of new music on the horizon; I just hope we don't have to wait another three years for that experience.
What are your thoughts on the new album? Was it worth the wait or does it fall short of your expectations?

Edit: The Outside is now my favorite track from SAI🖤💙
DoN't HaTe Me for being hard on it in my reaction!
Yes, it’s a great track!!
I thought the live stream made me fall in love more with the new songs. It was so well produced. The visuals, the props, the lights just everything made me realize how so much is thought about when writing songs. *chefskiss*
i liked The Outside’s rap verse because it was so corny and it was perfect for the concept of the album
Outside is my fav
Clancy has been the messenger (medium) in which all the lore has been formulated... If Clancy is dead I think it's a brilliant move to have the narrative feel empty, like it's missing what it once had, because we are missing someone we once had. Honestly this whole album is a commentary on the emptiness/confusion people feel with what's next in their narrative. When will this new covid era end? Will it end? People are turning to art and entertainment to find narratives that make sense in ESCAPE from their confusing reality instead of a time where art is present to inspire the meaning within ones reality. This album is a lesson on wether or not we are understanding the, "true narrative", the narrative that reflects reality - like when we once heard from our friend Clancy. This album has me feeling empty, awaiting the depth and beauty of the next album. Tyler is brilliant.
In trench we saw dema what it truly is and now in scaled and icy you're seeing dema as sunshine and rainbows. Scaled and icy isn't Tyler "being in a happy place and now experimenting with his sound" scaled and icy is continuation of trench. Tyler and Josh didn't escape dema like we thought in leave the city.
interesting people thought leave the city meant they had escaped dema, when it says "*in time* i will leave the city"
Ok, my take on this album. Because we know Sai is propaganda, this is Dema trying to paint themselves as a sunny and great place to be. Tyler's interview with Zane Lowe really helped solidify the theme of this album for me. (go watch it if you haven't, it's illuminating) In it Tyler talked about his inspiration for Good Day. He said he was imagining how he would react if he lost everything, if Jenna and Rosie died. He said he thought he would be in a total state of denial, trying to put on this happy face like, "No, it's fine, everything will be ok." but really he would be relying on things like drinking and smoking just to get by. It really puts all the upbeat, happy go lucky songs on the album in a whole new light. Cause remember, Sai is propaganda!
Then things start taking a turn in Mulberry street. Tyler starts rejecting Dema's false promises of happiness saying "Keep your bliss, there's nothing wrong with this." In other words it's ok to not be ok and to face all those hard emotions in life. He would rather have the real thing than the manufactured highs offered by dema. (the artificial, contained light as apposed to a real fire) In Bounce Man we get a sense of running away and leaving (not sure if it is running away from Dema or just running away from life's problems to that fake happiness) and then in No Chances the bishops are back to take control again. We end on Redecorate which I have seen people say is actually about someone Tyler knew who committed suicide whose parents were left with the decision of saving his room as a shrine or redecorating. (I have no confirmation of if this story is true or not but I did think this song was about suicide upon my first listen) So we are left at the end of the album with a picture of the bishops having won. Which fits quite well with any penultimate entry is a series, the bad guys seem to have the upper hand, the heroes are down and out, the stakes are high and we are left wondering if they can pull out a win in the climax of the story.
this is it chief
It's funny to see the difference in reactions between those who engage TØP as a band who's made music they like and those who engage them as storytellers. The concept of this album is deep and challenging while often candy coated with DEMA's poppy vibe. Propaganda is a kind of distraction from the truth. Seems like a lot of people are falling for it. Lol. Your comments are on point.
@@catholicfrank So true. I have seen a lot of "wow, so happy to see Tyler in such a good place now" comments. Not that he is not in a good place now, but that is not quite what he is writing about here.
I mean, scaled and Icy is an anagram for Clancy is dead
I interpreted "keep your bliss there's nothing wrong with this" as a line to try and tell people that this is genuine, totally not Dema, but actually letting them know that there is something wrong with it.
I’m pretty sure I heard that Redecorate was inspired by the suicide of one of Tyler’s friends kids where he cleaned his room before hand. So the idea of the song seems to be exploring the mentality of someone in Dema who is nearing the end (the end of Vialism) and is trying to decide how to leave their things for their loved ones after. It seems like the opposite of Neon Gravestones where he seems to be actively fighting against vialism and Redecorate seems to be from the perspective of someone giving in.
Sounds more like it's meant to be a song about *not* committing suicide because he doesn't want to make his family go through what his friends went through (where they had to decide whether to leave the room the way it was or change it): "I remember thinking how crazy powerful a story that is, and how it makes me wonder, like, 'What will people do with my stuff?' It can actually bring you back down to earth, to make sure that you don't make any horrible decisions. I'm realising now how difficult it is to talk about, but this song is really important to me."
It's not specified how the son died, but it is based on the story of his friend's son who passed away and they left his room as it was rather than changing anything to remember him and Tyler found that powerful and interesting.
BOoy
The quality
The commitment to the aesthetic
You're criminally underrated you deserve more views and subs.
I listened to all of Tyler's interviews about the album. After this, I think the album does its own work. I mean, yeah not my fav but It's an album that fulfilled its role in the flow of the story. But still, after I finished listening to this album, I wanted the next album to come in a shorter time. Because the lifetime of this album will be just like a transition period, as it is in its position in the story flow. But I will continue to listen to the album to support them. (btw my favs are definitely no chances and redecorate)
I don't get people saying this doesn't sound like them. I can draw so many comparisons to other songs of theirs on each one and it sounds groovy!
I love Good Day, it’s such a feel good song...
“I lost my job, my wife and child”
Sounds are different then lyrics. My comment was about the instrumentation!
Me watching this when the outside is my favourite song on the album 😞
BAHAHAHAHA SAME
same lmao
I know!
I like it now! It just took a while to warm up on me🤩
i’ve noticed that Leave the City and Choker share similar chord progressions and are in the same key, and they both have the shared “they know that it’s almost over/i know it’s over” lyrics in their choruses. maybe something to look out for with other songs in SAI relating to Trench...?
On the Jack White nod: Christmas 2019 tøp and Jack’s band The Racontours were on the same bill for two arena Christmas “festivals”. Ty met Jack who encouraged him to try guitar and later sent Ty a gift of guitar pedals, albums etc.. So we have guitar god Jack to thank, at least in part. I’ve watched half a dozen SAI reactions and so far you’re the only one who’s noticed.
Jake is reacting to a Twenty One Pilots album again ^^ nature is healing
This is one of my fave albums easy. Mulberry Street is my fave song rn. fave song ever not just this album.
I love the rock vibes of never take it, truly amazing
Formidable is so underrated
Best songs are mulberry street redecorate bounce man and outside outside I hear no one talking about it it’s so underrated it’s amazing and the vocals when he says take a hit are just yeah it’s incredible go hear outside
I hear a lot of people saying The Outside is in their top 3, it’s in mine too
"Never take it" is a legit rock song, my favorite for sure, soooooooo good.
Redecorate is about 3 different characters struggling with life in some way and trying not to leave this world... that's definitely my second favorite song
Such a great album. Just what the world needed at this time! So different from Trench and Blurryface but rooted in TOP core emotions. Took me 5 listens to finally appreciate it but wow they are growing. I love that they are showing more emotions than the typical anxiety, depressions, angst vibes.
As another big twenty one pilots fan that absolutely loved Trench, I think I was in the same box as you. The singles made me more nervous than excited. But honestly, I really liked this album.
The 80s pop vibe really brought me in (something I did not think I would like). Honestly, the lyrics are being entirely underrated in this album. If you want to look at in the terms of mental health, I think the journey of "good day" to "redecorate" can be seen almost mirroring the journey talked about in Ode to Sleep. If you want to take it as a metaphor for the creative process (Choker, Shy Away, Formidable) it is a really interesting look at the struggle. If you want to take it pure lore (Good Day, Shy Away, The Outside, No Chances) it works well in that regard too. I just really appreciate that. (and I think it makes sense that this is a looser concept than Trench given the more relaxed approach the Tyler and Josh took to this album)
Sonically, I think you hit it with Billy Joel, and more like 80s pop, but a really cool take on it imo. (We will never agree on Bounce Man. But it's fine. I'm. ... cool with it.) And then the darker turn at the end of the album was so needed. A really cool album imo. I love how it didn't end with a ballad and Redecorate is such an eerie song to end on. (reinforcesmyodetosleeptheory?)
Also, I think The Outside pairs really nicely with Saturday. I would encourage you to give the rap and song another chance (of course you don't have to)
And finally, lmaooo your reaction when Tyler says "scaled back and isolated" that was me! Definitely enjoyed the video man, thanks for making it!
Coming back to this after your update and I'm so glad you gave Bounce Man and The Outside a second chance! :D
@@mollymoleres2115 100%! Love both those songs now!
Dude I really loved the reaction itself. You're just so nice and happy and not boring like all of the other reactors except for nalbis and brad
damn i'm up there with these beautiful boys?
Yeah I’ve watched maybe 20 reviews and you guys definitely are there most entertaining.
I genuinely don’t think redecorate has anything to do with dema or the lore. I think it’s just a song about s****de and maybe the struggles people in those dark places have about what to do with their things so their loved ones don’t have to struggle with their items if they leave. It’s dark and I feel heavy when I listen to it. But it’s my favorite on the album because it’s the most real and vulnerable track
I definitely agree with you! There's so many connections I saw to s****de such as how it is common for victims to clean their rooms before going through with it. Also the line "the last thing I want to do is make my people make decisions wondering what to do" I feel like is this idea that they want to redecorate their rooms so their families don't have to feel the need to clean up their room or get rid of their stuff too soon and make it easier to just essentially close the door and try to ignore it. Also just the repeated "I don't wanna go like this" and the reference to the girl and the mirror or the boy and the closed door draws heavy connections. I didn't really see anything related to dema at all and I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Don’t quote me on this but I believe the song is dedicated to a friend of Tyler’s who lost her son and how she chose to leave his room how it was left and not “redecorate” it
@@bandana420 bingo
@@bandana420 Yup. Tyler said because of that this is one of the most important songs he's written, and that the thought process of wondering "What are they going to do with my stuff when I die?" might help ground someone and help them avoid making a horrible, irreversible decision.
At one point I was hesitant to theorize about it given the inspiration for the song, but then I was reminded that it quotes a letter from Clancy in the beginning of the song, so now I think it is related to the lore
How amazing was the livestream event!?! Personal theory: the Banditos pulled it off, they forced a sponsor, had a concert, started a mob,, a complete diversion. But not everyone got out i.e. Tyler on the couch at the end
The quality of your video is amazing
Love the blue and pink lighting you have in the background! Looks so good!
Oh thank you! Getting the lighting right was a big focus of this video
We need a reaction to the Live Stream!!!!! It was mind blowing
When I first heard scaled and icy, I wasn't very happy. I was one of those people that said it didn't feel 21 pilots enough. Not because it wasnt depressing, but because the songs felt repetitive and super pop and not very unique. But after listening to it more, I honestly don't care. I mean I still think that holds true, it's very repetitive, very pop, very 'common' so to speak, but it fucking slaps. I never thought I could have so many songs stuck in my head at once. And I also realized that 21 pilots isn't as much a genre in of itself as people say, but rather a jumble of emotions. All of Tyler and Josh's songs just represent feeling and its great. Im gonna try to keep this on the short-long end, so I'll stop talking, but if you feel the same as I did before, give it another listen and see what you think after a week of listening.
Edit: this was *not* on the short side
yesss the background is sick
Great reaction, love your videos
Best video to watch before the livestream wow🔥🔥🔥
I do Love the album. Wasn’t sure I would since it took me a while to get used to their new sound. Glad this album was heavy and dark-too much of that this past year!
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I die with/for you"
reminded me of ride!
i love your cheerful reaction to good day when the song is about tyler imagining what would happen if he lost jenna and rosie lol
I still think it's an amazingly joyful track🤩
If you listen closely there are screamo bits in the background in the end of shy away
No chances reminds me of ode to sleep bc of the light chorus and a heavy verse. Also reminds me of fairly local
I loved the album is it my favourite no but I love it. I understand this is apart of the storyline Tyler did say I hope the fans hang for the ride because this might be jarring because its not the sound were use to. plus he is already working on the next one which will be the last in the storyline
21:02 « you know it’s about jenna » well, no 😍
I got comfused cuz I always thought it was about rosie, isnt it??
@@gabrielmottard9027 I thought the same at first too but he mentions how many years josh and him are still together as a band ant that’s what makes the track about him and josh Being together for so long. In my opinion this makes it also more emotional bc of the relationship to twenty one pilots that I have and that developed over the years. Great song!
Now I'm thinking it's about Trash!
"take a dark turn take a dark turn" and then redecorate starts.....
That thumbnail though 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks Ruben!
I streamed this over and over at work today. How they explore their boundaries and continue to experiment
the outside is a BOP. and in the rap verse was a message
I just realised that the new logo of the band is a SAI, and SAI means scaled and Icy
Yes! Love that double meaning.
I love how you started nodding right at the beggining of the outside
My favourite album is trench too, but this album, it's something else
I mean ~the viiibes~ and now when all of the theories are coming out, ugh LOVE IT
Dude, you are so underrated.
14:10 THERES MILES OF LAND INFRONT OF US
(making this comment a chain for my reactions)
good day reminds me of the intro to a feel-good musical that takes place in the suburbs. a man is saying goodbye to his wife and kids as he heads off to work. every day is beautiful in his eyes. i know the lyrics hold a lot more than that, but from first impressions, that’s what i thought of. it gave me those warm and fuzzy vibes
and i agree, i’m missing the thick and dark undertones of previous albums.
i feel like twenty one pilots is pulling a “gorillaz move” lmao 😂 like how each of gorillaz’s albums takes up a different tone or genre. the outside is definitely something you’d groove to while you drive around with friends. i love the rap break!
it sounds so weird but saturday reminded me of marching band when i was in high school.
monday we had practice after school.
friday we got loud at football games
we painted the town on saturday when we went to competitions.
i really like this song because it made me think of being care free
during the livestream, in the never take it performance you can see a “bounce bail bonds” store so it made me think of blm after listening to it again. i dunno, it was a nice touch
mulberry street is really jukebox-y and lovey-dovey 😌 i really like it.
side note: what if trench and sai were made into a graphic novel? oooh
My favorite songs are, Shy Away, The Outside, No Chances, and Redecorate.
Exactly my favorites too
I really enjoy how I can just vibe to this album, but there's lines sprinkled in everywhere that remind me about the lore implications of what's happening in the background. There's lines everywhere along the lines of "come back to Dema, we forgive you for leaving" and then the illusion is completely stripped away with No Chances
This is great, I wish more subscribers)
They even succeed in what they have criticized
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE A VID ABOUT THIS SHIT
I watched this video like a week ago and it was fantastic. But I came back to say that the cover for self titled... kinda illustrates "I can feel my saturation leaving me slowly". Little theory, Easter egg, or at least something to make a point that tøp continues to deal with similar themes in each album
Saturday sounds like Katy Perry - California Gurls. A part of it
I enjoyed the album.
Formidable gave me major The Smiths vibes
I LOVE THIS REACTION SO MUCH!!! lovvveeee it friend! ||-//
Thank you! I just watched yours and it's an easy 10 out of 10!
What are those lights? They are sick!
I used two Aputure MC RGB lights!
Good Day is about how he’d be in denial if his wife and daughter died
DUDE. You are farrrr from right my friend, no disrespect to you, but you should make it clear that that's your interpretation
@@fringe_piano well what do you think
@@WillTheSkillet I think it's about whatever you want it to be about, as I said I respect your interpretation, and I agree with you, you just need to make it clear that it is an opinion bc some people will believe it
@@fringe_piano tyler literally said what it was abt? What're u talking abt he needs to show its his opinion. Its literally abt what would happen if Jenna and Rosie left. He even says lost my job my wife and child? So know what you're talking abt before you come at him
@@Jacobg1633 know your stuff, BRUH I've listened to twenty one pilots for 8 years, I know my stuff, if you were a fan you would know that stuff he says in interviews is for the general public, he said during the emotional roadshow that he delivers his true meanings to his true fans, so yeah, if you really want to be rude to me, at least think before you type
im kinda sad you didnt like The Outside....since it is my favorite.
Personally I loved a lot about the album, definitely super different vibe, but Formidable and Redecorate or my absolute favorite, The Outside is super good too, I loved shy away and Choker, but honestly Saturday is probably one of my least favorite tøp songs ever, idk feels like tyler is trying to teach me the days of the week in the chorus, No Chances is pretty intense and good, I would give it like a 7/10 honestly. Definitely like it more than Trench just because its more relatable than trench was
Hmm trench Is relatable for everyone if you look deeper
@@Liammoz true I was super into the leaks and then the album came out and idk I never took the time to look into it all sadly, still love them tho
I absolutely love Pet Cheetah 🐆
Twenty one pilots lo fiii 😂🤣😃😁 A FEW SECONDS LATER.. 🙁😶
So you should do a reaction vid to the live stream show
Does anyone know where to get the blue and pink tape?
I think this album is very risky for the band because to continue the Dema lore they changed a lot, their logo, their music, their colours, their vibes and style and this is very difficult to accept for an old fan used to a specific music. But I think that twenty one pilots has always been very experimental in their music and they never disappoint the expectations, they are fantastic even if they brought sounds already heard in the story of music this time. Tyler always personalized his music and taking old sounds he creating new ones that hypnotized you. The story begin to be more complex than it seems at the beginning... I'm waiting for the end following them step by step.
Exactly! It's kind of frustrating not having all the answers but I know that with time, we'll be satisfied. Definitely a risky move from a business standpoint!
Omg thank you so much for the ❤️!
damn how dare u be way more charasmatic than me and more natural in your reactions >>>>::::((((
genuinely loved your honesty here my guy
Found him again 🙄
Also Nalbis - you attract the attention of TØP fans who really want to get to the core of what they are and what they are trying to communicate. I think it might be helpful for you (in making videos) if you created some form of communal dialogue where people like you could enjoy working together to unveil the meaning. I think you'd be a great head for that.
Thanks man. Really tried to be more honest with this reaction instead of being completely blinded by the rose-tinted twenty one pilots fan glasses😁
the outside was my favorite 😆
The outside is gonna grow on your for sure.
IT HAS!
Unlisted gang wya? Also, I think I'm technically first comment :D

Good day is dark., made with a “hopeful undertone.”
What type of tape is that on your fingers
And where did u get it from?!
It's duct tape I cut into smaller pieces - I got it from my local craft store(:
Formidable sounds like melt with you by modern English but lighter
formidable
It was really cool and really good but didn't have enough umpf for me personally
Tyler also told that the album and the Live Experience are kinda married, so you kinda have to combine it to get the full view of things :D
I'm not surprised people are disappointed with this album cause trench was so lore heavy and intense and for all intents and purposes this is a pop album, and it's such a departure from the past two albums but I also think people don't give artists enough a chance to experiment with sound, the same thing happened with MANIA for fall out boy. Trust me, lower your expectations! Go into everything open minded and your music taste will widen exponentially!!
This album is actually part of the lore!
Love 21 piolet forever YOUNG TY n I love new song as well N hope fam are well blessed they are tes n play IT LET me hear THIS DON'T doubt THEIR NOT going away we love them.always LOVE N happy az PRECIOUSE 💞💞🤪🌹🌹🌹🌹🐾🐾🐾
did you have a seizure
The Outside is my least favorite track too so it surprised me when so many people seemed to love it and would rank it above Saturday which I genuinely enjoy. My two favorites are Redecorate and Never Take It! I was also really glad you said the bridge of Never Take It reminded you of The White Stripes because I knew Tyler's voice reminded me of something specific but couldn't place it until you said it, I was literally like "THAT'S IT" haha
I've seen some people twitter say that the "she" in Redecorate is Clancy. Like, we've all assumed that Clancy is a guy, but Clancy's gender is never explicitly stated. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
But there is also an interview that Redecorate has some basis in a real life story of some family friends that lost a kid, and then didn't know if they wanted to redecorate the room.
So who knows. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
I do like the Clancy theory a lot. Another theory I heard about the second verse is that it's about Jenna mourning Tyler because in the lyric video the pronoun "taking inventory of his life" was originally "my" so fans think Tyler started to write the song about himself then changed his mind, so then the lyric about "changing her name, just not in the traditional way" is Jenna changing her last name back to Black.
2:10 good day
5:38 choker
7:45 shy away
10:20 the outside
13:24 saturday
15:33 never take it
18:17 mulberry street
19:47 formidable
21:40 bounce man
22:49 no chances
27:37 redecorate
People should stop using the old tøp stuff as an excuse to say “this is not the twenty one pilots i know” cause if you know them well enough you wouldn’t say that, they don’t have an especific genre and they don’t have to stay on the line of dema’s story always. It is normal when they take other ways in their album.
Haha I was the same as you listening to it, the start of the album was hopeful, but the middle of the album was very underwhelming. I wanted to love this but it doesn't compare to Trench at all
You over here liking my second fav song the least and my least favorite song the most. Feels bad man
I feel like no one is talking about how often blurryface is in this album! I hear him all the time
those are supposed to be the bishops!
Was here for trench now here for sai
His lyrics seem hollow, right? I imagine it's because dema made the album as propaganda
there’s actually really deep and heavy lyrics, you just gotta find them in each song
.........dang
I just want to comment
"Twenty One Pilots LoFi?" my man predicted it
21:00 I’m pretty sure it’s about Josh
Formidable is actually about Rosie Robert.
Is formidable really about Jenna?.
I don't think so now. Pretty sure it's about Trash!
It’s like a dema 80s sitcom. Propaganda. Some of the music in bounce man reminds me of like in a show when a “technical difficulties” screen comes up then going into No Chances is back to reality
Bruv how you not like bounce man
Don’t get the hate towards this album I think it’s actually there best sounding album and I love how they went more experimental with there sound
some of the songs are starting to grow on me but formidable, i just cant, i hate how it sounds lmao idk my brain just hates it
it's sooooo boring
Idk how you know all the Dema lore and still don't understand the songs and why they were created like that
