- This video was created to provide users a complete guide on how they can obtain a class 5 license in Alberta. Class 5 is equivalent to G class for Ontario and allows users to drive most personal vehicles including RVs.
The video was made in Hindi to cater to most of the Subcontinent users as it's an easy language to interpret.

i am planning to come to calgary next year . Next year i would have completed my 1 year of license in india. Will i get exemption for class 5 wait period?

Are routes for drive test fixed in Calgary or it depends upon the examiner?
Every registry test examiners have a different route, and its upto examiners to decide, but generally they try to follow a fixed route but you would never know ! Trust your driving and just follow the rules, up to 75 points you can accumulate and still pass if you don't make a serious mistake like not stopping for pedestrians or overspending in school zones, etc.
Hey man thank you for the informative video, my only question is when you surrender your Indian DL do you get it back in case we need to go back after our work permit expires how are we supposed to get it back?
It's a tricky process! You need to make requests directly to the DMV, I would be visiting the registry next week to get information on how to get my license back! Stay tuned

No Rajwinder, only your original license should be okay , but if you carry no harm. Also please note they don't add your experience of India here, they just use it to get you an exemption for the waiting period of GDL period which enables you to get full class 5 license
Very informative video bro, I have already submitted my original Indian DL and Extract letter to Registry in Calgary but after few days unfortunately they denied my DL , saying that it's not original and there is no chip on my DL it has QR code . So what would be my next step for GDL exemption?

Apparently you need to submit the original DL , all the Indian DLs now come with a smart card ( chip) , the recourse you have is get it from India or wait for 12 months as you can get only class 7 for now
@@welcomeaboardY2k Bro , After writing the mail to the Authorities, I got my approval for GDL EXEMPTION within few minutes. It means my DL was original and it was theirs mistake.

Hi Yuvraj, Sorry they would not accept anything except for an original license for GDL exemption. So if you want to save 18 months of time get originals couriered from INDIA. But you can try your luck, visit a nearby registry and check with them , but I am not hopeful. Goodluck

Hi Natasha, If you didn't hold a full G license in Ontario, you cannot get a full Class 5 in Alberta, you will have to exchange your license in any nearby registry with a similar Class 5 GDL program. You can drive with a class 5 GDL with some restrictions.
"If you have not held the Class 5 (standard driver's licence) or Class 6 (motorcycle) licence for a minimum of 2 years, you may be placed into the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program."

I hope you mean is GDL exemption. I would have suggested to wait another 2 months, but the final decision you would know from registry only, if had a LMV class license , I think it would be fine. Check on your exemption request in 10 days time, once they say you were approved, you can schedule the road test. And get a full Class 5

Not needed in Alberta, it's only needed if your driver's license from India is not in English! You just need an original drivers license which is at least 2 years old
It is suggested to bring your DL Extract from India, Shared my recent experience in Alberta. Don't forget DL Extract validity is 6 months.
Can I apply for class 7 on visitor visa before getting a work permit????
Hi Mr.Khan , Visitors from another jurisdiction can drive the same type or Class (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7) of motor vehicle in Alberta on a valid driver’s licence from their home jurisdiction for up to one year.
You can get a class 7 as visitor as well , however I would suggest waiting until you get a work permit as with your Indian licence you can still drive being visitor, but class 7 is like a learner , where you cannot drive alone , you would always need to be with someone who has full class 5 license.
Reach out to your nearest registry for more details. Also proof of residence in Alberta is mandatory in your name.

I’m in Alberta rn and I bring my DL extract with me but the problem is I have only 1.5 year experience back in my country. Should I wait for few more months to let it be 2 yrs experience or should I apply for class 7 now.
I suggest you should wait 6 month, coz it would help you get GDL exemption. But you can still get class 7, and apply for GDL exemption after 6months. With class 7 you can learn driving here

No sir, it won't help reducing your time! Sadly you will have to wait for the entire period after getting a class 7 in Alberta or equivalent class in other provinces

I have moved from Ontario to edmonton. I have a g1 license of Ontario. I have to give class 7 knowledge test?? Or i can get class 5 gdl directly?
You can exchange the same with an equivalent class license if G1 in Ontario allows you to drive independently with minor restrictions you would be able to get a 5 GDL, or It would be class 7 only. Please go to the nearest registry for evaluation, generally they send your license for evaluation to Motor Vehicle department and it takes about 10 days to get the results

Class 7 is mandatory for everyone who is not having a licence from a country with whom Canada does not have a treaty for reciprocal agreement. So irrespective of what class of licence you hold , class 7 written test is mandatory. You can apply for GDL exemption surrendering your home license which will help you get your full class 5 faster. If you are from most south asian country , you are not under the reciprocal agreement

You will still need to do a Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) to apply for their commercial driver’s licence. Training includes a government-mandated number of training hours for in-class, in-yard and in-vehicle modules with standardized curriculums being taught at all licensed Alberta driver training schools. There is no automatic route for class 1 license

Yes, you can apply for GDL exemption even after getting class 7, go to registry and submit your license

You would get an equivalent license in Alberta , which is a class 7, but since you have 18month for a learner license you might be allowed to get a class 5 GDL and then progress to Full class 5

Hi bro, actually under exchange program there is no way to add your Indian experience as it remains in your file and there is nothing written on your license. The only place your previous experience matters is when you take driver's insurance , but that you can work by just saying the number of years you have experience.

Hi Rahul, If you have a license from other province in Canada you can simple exchange your licence , you just need to visit your nearest registry and surrender your licence , also for convenience if you have moved here recently you can drive in Alberta for 90 days with your Ontario’s licence . Also once you surrender your Ontario licences you cannot get it back. Hope it clarifies

Yes, if your Ontario licence was of a equivalent class. You would also need to carry your photo I’d and have a local address proof.

As long as its original and valid license, it's fine ! Even Canada doesn't issue chip license

DL extract is not needed, also giving license just exempt you from GDL wait time of 18 months. driving test written and both on road you still need to give !!
Okay thanks for responding one last query, my license was issued 1.5 year ago which was lost. I have applied for a new card from the RTO in India and got it issued this month with the date 24th, it has my first date of issue on the side, my experience will count from the first date of issue right? Also this new license issued by the RTO would be valid right for applying exemption. It’s official license copy issued by RTO

Bhai it's complicated, the process of license is Class 7, then Class 5 GDL then Full Class 5. Having Indian LMV license just help to save time! Once you clear class 7, apply for GDL exemption with Indian license, they will let you know if approved or not!

Hi Sahil, Registry sends the license for review and approval from the Transport department. Did you request them for the GDL exemption request after paying $58? If yes, you can be directly eligible for the class 5 road test if your request is approved by the government. It generally takes about 10 days to 2 weeks to decide on your request for approval. You have to apply for GDL exemption after paying a Fees at registry , I suggest you go back to you registry and and request them for GDL exemption, please note you need to surrender your original driving licence from India while applying for GDL exemption. Automatic qualification doesn’t happen.Also driving extracts are not mandatory while applying GDL exemption, you just need original driving licence from INDIA

@@sahilsharma4121for getting class 7, Indian licence submission is not mandatory, but since you did, please go to the registry and check with them to apply for GDL exemption. This can be confirmed if you had paid the additional fees of 58 cad, if not go and do it

The process is same, you need to pass class 7 knowledge test ,then surrender your Oman license at registry and apply for GDL exemption and once approved, you can give the class 5 driving test and once you pass the driving test , you can get full class 5 license

It's tricky, if you are an extended visitor on visitor visa having a visitor record you can get the driving license . However you would need a proof of residency in Alberta, but as a foreign tourist you can drive up to 90 days with an international driving permit.
