  • A walk across the Cardiff Bay barrage from Penarth Marina to Mermaid Quay, Cardiff.
    The barrage was completed in1999 and turned the tidal Cardiff Bay into a freshwater lake.
    On the walk across the barrage of Cardiff Bay, you go past some of the old Cardiff Docks which used to be known as Tiger Bay.
    The most famous person from Tiger Bay was the singer Shirley Bassey.
    Cardiff Docks was one of the biggest ports in the country and the main port for the export of coal mined in the Welsh valleys. The area is now a hub for entertainment and home to the Wales Millennium Centre concert hall.
    Many of the old buildings are still there, including the Pierhead building, pilotage building and the Norwegian Church.

    I very much enjoy your vlogs, especially those about Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. My father was from Ewenny, and his father’s family from Llantwit - generations are buried in the Priory graveyard. I am looking forward to spending three weeks in May in Wales, slowly exploring. Greetings from New Mexico.

      Fingers crossed for warmer dry weather, though I will have my Gortex. Currently in my van near Santa Fe, at 7,000 ft elevation. Freezing / light snow overnight, so Wales will be warmer!
      My next challenge is to figure out the rail, TrawsCymru and local bus timetables, as well as the tangle of tickets and passes. Great fun, really.
      Again, thanks for vlogs!

    10 out of 10!!! We’ve been to Cardiff bay. In 2011. Nice place to visit. The Wales millennium center men’s toilets are very nice in the main building. Lol. How are you mic’d? Your voice comes across very nicely. Curious of mic brand, wired or wireless. Super cool and interesting. We had a blue badge guide who lives in Wales that was our tour guide, but he failed to provide us the very interesting information about the history of the docs. Thank you very much. One day before we visited Cardiff Bay I had an Internet friend that drove up from Bournemouth and gave us a tour of London. He took us to the Thames barrier. Which is similar and also fascinating.Roald Dahl is just not a name that we are familiar with over here at least not me, growing up. Even though Willy Wonka was one of my favorite movies, just never knew the creator/author. Another famous name that I’ve never really heard many people mention until fairly recently is Attenborough. But that’s an unrelated tangent. When we visited in 2011 I really didn’t know much about Doctor Who. But we came upon the tardis at I believe Caernarfon castle. Upon return to the USA, I watched all of the modern Doctor Who episodes. Speaking of the interior of Cardiff castle, we dined for dinner there one night and some of the rooms are just amazing. Also featured on one episode of Doctor Who that I have watched. Never seen torchwood. Thank you for such a great Sunday morning.

      I use Rode Mics but this time there was an issue and the mic wasn't working properly, luckily I retrieved enough (the main thing is a windshield). David Attenborough is nearly royalty over here not forgetting his brother Richard, who was the actor and film director.

    Loving your walks Marcus, thank you. That was definitely the Big Windsor pub, I remember going there a few times around 1980 when it was still the Big Windsor pub. It was a curry house about 10 years ago, no idea what it is now. Wetherspoons used to be Harry Ramsdens.

    Such fascinating industrial history. I imagine it would look a lot more cheerful when the sun comes out. Although I dare say that a Jumbo Sausage purchased from one of those working man's huts would lift anyone's spirits, even on the bleakest of grey days.
    As an aside, it's such a pity about Mr Rogers' oversized petrol station - the Welsh people deserve so much better.

    I really enjoyed this one again, Marcus. Some facts I did know, others I didn’t, but all of it utterly fascinating in the way you’ve presented it. I’m surprised that Ianto’s shrine is still there some thirteen years on - I was a big Torchwood and Doctor Who fan at the time, but it certainly feels such a long time ago now.

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  Před 2 lety +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! Like you, I'm surprised it is still there. I think they did try to remove the shrine but there was a bit of an outcry.

      @oliverroderick2353 Před 2 lety

      I do find it odd the shrine is still there when the Doctor Who Experience has gone. Never mind. I’ll go against the grain of some of the other comments though - I think Cardiff Bay has bundles of character on a murky grey day, so I think you got the ideal conditions here. Looking forward to the next one.
