    Here I show the process of building a natural pond (without using concrete or plastic). Natural ponds can have a very positive impact on the surrounding ecology, and they also make beautiful places for humans to relax end enjoy. More videos about the development of my permaculture project in Costa Rica will follow, so don't forget to subscribe!

    the most useful pond video ive seen so far. love the tip about stiring clay into the water so particles settle into cracks. excellent

    Outstanding work and video. The simple graphing paper overlays explained the process just as well as any overdone computer generated infoworks. We need more of these ponds the world over, but alas, the permitting around these parts are a barrier and headache, if allowed at all. Bravo on your part.

    Its so amazing your pond congratulations¡¡ I want to create one but have a question, I don't understand this part 4:04 , what are you trying to say? obviously the insects arrive but how did the small fish arrive? did you put them there? Or how were they born? I don't understand

    Hi, on the drawing @ 01:14, we see that the slope downstairs is not in the continuation of the slope upstairs. My question is what is the original slope ? the one from the bottom or the one upside of the pond on this drawing ? Thanks

    • @ttones
      @ttones  Před 4 lety

      Hi. The original slope was irregular. Prior to starting the project, we made a small terrace depicted by the flat line between the upper and lower slopes.

      I'm by no means an expert, but im pretty sure you can pound one layer after another of clay on the surface of the pond, until you get a nice smooth finish, a good concentration of evenly spread clay will permeate the surface while still allowing decent conditions for life to develop in and around it

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 Před 2 lety

      First of all by excavating a depression. With running water at the surface, at least part of the time, it's below the water table, at least part of the time, which means it's not holding the water so much as it's exposing underground water. They lost that water in dry season when I assume the stream dried up and the water table dropped, so they dumped a bunch of loose clay, stirred it around, and then let it settle (slowly) to the bottom, creating a clay liner, which is pretty cool idea.

    • @ttones
      @ttones  Před 2 lety +1

      clay, clay, clay! Stir thoroughly and often, so the particles suspend and then land everywhere.

      It's hard to show, I would need a whole new video. I bring water via 2 one-inch hoses from a nearby creek using only gravity. About 800 meters both hoses together going through jungle, tied to trees above pits, underground, etc.

      A pond holds/stores water - a swale is an infiltration system. What he built is a pond. Bill describes this in his PDM.

    • @DeepBlueSpirit2
      @DeepBlueSpirit2 Před 2 lety

      @@forcesightknight It's only a detail but a pond does not leak, a swale does on purpose. It is possible to run cracks in the swale basin, to further help water infiltrate and soak into the soil to make it over even dry seasons until the next rainy season. This is done during the swale setup phase. Maye you mean that a swale 'looks' like a pond when it is full. That's true, in a way. Swivel pipes going thru the lower part of the mound can be used to lower water inside swales and use as needed, if strong rainfall or swale runs high of water.
