Anaheim is right, you better put some respect on Dostal's name. Toronto blanketed the Ducks in that game with 57 shots (13 of them came from Matthews) and that guy ended the game with a .965 save percentage and was the first star of the game. If it wasn't for Dostal, Toronto would have annihilated the Ducks in the scoresheet. It was a phenomenal performance.
In Matthews defense we've only ever won 1 game where he had to put over 10 shots in his career

Yeah, Dostal actually ended up with a better Save % than the winning goalie Jones! (Not every day that happens!)
A performance any goalie might give rarely. But normally, any goalie facing that many shots will give up 5 or more goals.

I made a similar mistake last year underestimating Dostal. It was his 4th NHL start against Oilers and he landed 46 saves and a 939 sv% ultimately winning the game.

Dostal was amazing for Ilves here in Finland before he moved to the NHL and he’s loved by Ilves fans. He has also played for the Czech national team in the World Champs and World Juniors. Definitely not a no-name. Toronto Sun probably did him a favour to draw some more attention to his talents.
To be honest, I never heard of him before Jan 3 but I'll remember him. To hold the top shooter in the league scoreless for 3 periods was fantastic. OK, he's not Ron Tugnutt but still, 55 saves is very impressive. Come on Toronto Sun, do the right thing. Great job Mr. Dostal.
Thanks, I was trying to remember Tugnutt's name last night. Was it 73 shots against Boston in Guy Lafleur's last game at the Garden (the quality Bruins fans gave him a standing ovation).
He held off the penguins in Pittsburgh this season in that 4-3 upset as well. Came in at the start of the second period to replace an injured Gibson. I was pretty excited and then dostal couldn't stop a beach ball in almost every game after that leading into this game with Toronto where he was a monster again.

When I was a teen, I thought Gilles Meloche with the Golden Seals had an 80 save game, (81 shots) but I cannot find anything on it.

Jones did a lot for the Kraken as a backup to Phillip Grubauer last year in the playoffs, huge. Glad to see he’s doing well.

Toronto sports media is horrible in general, but the Sun is at the absolute bottom of the cesspit, and has been for as long as I can remember. Doesn't surprise me at all they'd run a headline like that. As for Dostal, he was phenomenal. That kind of performance would get a guy a standing ovation on the road. Even though it was against my team it was a delight to watch, especially since the Leafs still got the win.
You mentioned the penalty on McMann; I don't understand how that stayed a 5 after review. There have been far worse hits resulting in injury/cuts that were reduced to 2 this year. I thought the officiating for the game as a whole was just plain bad. Three of the penalties on the Ducks were horrible calls, the worst being the "Roughing" call given to Killorn on McCabe. If you really wanted to call something there could have given them both 2 for unsportsmanlike; McCabe for not letting go of Killorn's stick long after the whistle and Killorn for the shove to the head.

Dostal's performance was shades of prime Gigeure. I used to dread the Leafs playing in Anaheim, because I knew no matter how well the Leafs played Giguere would stand on his head.
Good point about how Leafs fans and media would be hyping over Dostal if he was a Leaf. They would love a goalie like hin right now. This feels kind of like big market arrogance, how a bigger market doesnt appreciate ot acknowledge talent on smaller market teams.

Just to clarify what I meant - I wasn't saying that the Leafs fan base is looking down or not appreciating talent such as Dostal's. I was indicating how certain entities in a big market (some media and the Toronto Sun in question) will look down upon smaller markets. I know most hockey fans in general appreciate and understand talent in the game.
What was even more disrespectful was the fact that Dostal's team didn't even come onto the ice to greet and congratulate him on a game well played.

@dylanmethven3845 It was luck that they won. When you put 55 shots on and only 1 goes in? That's puck luck that they managed the second goal. The Ducks scored the same number of goals in far less shots. The Ducks had the better odds in that case.

I think the disrespect is actually against the Leafs. They almost lost to someone they consider a "no-name goalie". That says a lot more about their play to me than it does about Dostal.
Reminds me of the playoffs in 2022. First round the Rangers face the Penguins. The Penguins are having goalie issues, and they end up having a third round goalie as their starter for the series. Louis Domingue had some NHL experience, but had more minor league experience, and played a combined 20 games since the 2019-2020 season. Someone I know laughed about him being the "pretzel boy". Dude took the Rangers to Game 7, which the Rangers only managed to win in overtime. "Pretzel boy" almost took the Penguins to round 2!
Then, for the 2022-2023 season, he was signed by the Rangers. I really laid into the person who laughed at him calling him "Pretzel Boy"! (He even played a game this year for the Rangers, and won, only letting in 1 goal on 26 shots!)

We have been short handed 120 more minutes than we have been on the power play. Second closest team to that is 46. 46 minute differential. The Ducks are not complaining about the calls going against them at all. They are complaining about the missed calls. McTavish getting his helmet taken off twice, no call, then Jones gets the lightest tap “slashing” penalty directly after. It’s a joke, clear bias, and it’s insanity. Plus Matthew’s with the puck in OT, no call, and he scores right after.

If he isnt one of the better young upcoming goaltenders.... He carried Czech Republic to the Golden medal in the Hockey international tournament, the performance he made was exceptional and I believe he should have also receive thropy for the most valuable player. He is better than them, you will see yourself. Hopefully he will be able to prove it with some better team in future

The thing that will never make sense to me is you have nothing to gain by downplaying the opponent. People do it in everything sports or even video games, saying someone is a no name player or even saying they are a nobody or they suck in a game where you were struggling to get back into it just makes you look worse. Speaking as somebody who has been writing for a multitude of newspapers, alt-news weeklies, monthly mags, bi-monthlies and quarterlies (as well as for TorStar -- Sun Media's direct competition -- although I did arts and music, not sports) for the last twenty years, I'd take anything The Sun runs with a grain of salt. That paper's greatest draw for a long time was the Sunshine Girl -- I guess upsetting people and being tedious is how they're making ends meet these days.

As someone who lives in the GTA I can tell you…….us respectful Leafs and sports fans don’t read that shit rag or pay any attention to their writers. Will say the same for the Toronto Star as well. Any newspaper that employs a writer as slimy as Steve Simmons should get ZERO credibility.
And Dostal was incredible in that game. As much as I wanted the Leafs to win (and I’m happy they did) I wouldn’t have been upset if they lost……he deserved the W after that performance.

It's not right that a team gets a penalty for doing something that every player does, finishing a check, just because the opposing player puts himself into a bad position. That was on the Ducks player foe putting himself in a bad position for a check. I can kinda understand a call, as it was a little late, but boarding or being kicked out of the game is complete bs
