It's a real shame that 95% or more of the people there had no idea that they had just witnessed GREATNESS! They probably thought that it was just some high school or college band. A Disney parade is hardly the venue for showing off Drum Corps talent.

Don’t be so quick complain about the musical choice: Disney is very particular about what their guest groups play, and they chose the song, not the Cavaliers. I’ve marched there with my high school a couple times and they were total hardasses. If the Cavaliers ran the show for their Disney parades, it wouldn’t be a total snoozefest.

I totally understand it's 2018 and music/drill are far more intricate than years ago. I don't however see any problem with a corps making a tribute to how things were done in the past. Need I remind many of you in these comments of how rich and historical the cavaliers are..... founded in 1948 I believe. This primitive, classic military march has almost nothing to do with these cosmopolitan, refined performers. It's painful to watch.
Look at the personalities of these marching members in this video-- the last thing they should be playing is a cigar-chomping army barracks march. Look at the faces-- they're exquisitely artistic, sensitive, refined men. The guard is fucking elegant. They're cherubic, angelic, clean shaven and camera ready. With their dance training, they don't march, they float like eagles. Soft and mysterious like drifting fog. They're coiffed and even delicate in some ways-- they're almost a mystical illusion.
But let's face it, the Cavaliers' recent eleven minute programs don't fit the performers' true personalities revealed here in this video (note the royal prince waves. 0:37) For example, this year the Cavies' show coordinator was hung up on a traditional masculine ideal. Why? And the year before they were angry pugilistic political rabble rousers falling prey to propaganda, crotch kicking, and street-fighting and hoo-rahing. And the year before that playing Olympic athletes in combat sports. Come on.
What in hell is this macho-obsessed trend about? Are the marching members really enjoying this ridiculous butch posturing? It doesn't ring true to the artistic finesse of the marching members. They're capable of so much more than the recent arm wrestling, tobacco spitting stuff they've been forced to do in these disingenuous "man cave" show designs, which have at their core a desire to obtain some distant masculine ideal from a Brawny commercial. It's false and antithetical to the core of these performers. Sure, they're stretching their range of character portrayals, but come on-- Zac Effron is never going to play a rough-hewn mercenary from Blackwater. Talented as he is, he would never be cast as that.
Another example, Madison this year, in a laughable macho-obsession, attempted to portray band of mentally deranged desert fighters like in Mad Max, gut-punching, beheading, ass- kicking, loogie-hocking, and skull-scalping their way through an absolutely laughable and self-conscious desert lumberjack contest, all the while wearing feathers on their heads. Their characters were tribal fighters, but the performers themselves were as far from that character as you could ever imagine casting in any bus and truck tour anywhere. These are dancers, and yes their character work is getting there, but really who can be masculine when you're doing modern dance in tights and twirling flags? That's a tall order.
What's happening is that the corps are receiving feedback from charitable donors that the choreography and show design aren't masculine enough. The problem isn't that the choreography is feminine. The problem is it's heart-on-the-sleeve emotive, it's too frantic, it's nervous, harried, spineless and almost comedic looking. There's a trend now to have frantic, fast-paced choreography, the result of which makes it look like the performers are wind puppets in front of used car lots. It's silly-looking and lacks finesse, poise, and ultimately it just looks disjointed and wacko. The second problem is the designers are taking that feedback from charitable donors and reactively selecting the most absurdly tough-guy premise they can possibly think of and cobbling a show around that theme. The themes are almost paranoiacally macho: MMA fighters, professional wrestlers, political activists and union organizers. What's next? Truckers, oil rig workers and leather fetishists? Such ridiculous show themes. A macho show theme cannot suddenly make your color guard something that they at their core beings are not. For example, not one of Madison's guard members is going to live in a broken down Winnebago in the mohave desert, eating snakes and cactus juice and rig their hog with metal spikes, no matter how much eye black they cake on over their moisturized faces, and no matter how much their charitable donors beg them to be more like Mad Max. Come on. Look at the guys in this video. Ain't gonna happen.
Another trend that Madison is doing is they're adding psychopathic anger to substitute for masculinity. Judas. Anger. Mental instabiilty. Mad World. Mad Max fighters. (The Mad Max performers looked almost sick by the end of the season.) All their anger was an unfortunate mis-direction because the Last Man Standing show had no reason for being. The story made no sense, dramatically, and didn't match the core values of the organization.
Something's gotta be done with these show designs. They must begin to fit the nature of the performer. The mystical. The elegant. The refined. The complex. The cool elegance of super heroes. So, designers must do away with their donor-guided quest for hollow displays of hyper- masculinity which ring false, have an acrid odor of inexplicable violence, and in the end just fall flat.

Frost 101 - I been watching drum corps and have marched since 1964 until I aged out in 1971. I was also an instructor. In all those years I seen the activity declined from around 5,000 corps in the U.S and Canada to now around 50. Why did so many great corps fold and why does DCI insists on being such an expensive activity to belong to. My dues wih a national championship corps that I marched with were $70 a year. Now, you have to beg mom and dad or take out a loan to participate for eight weeks on the summer tour. Drum corps has gone from being a youth activity to being a college educational profession that very few kids can participate in. I have seen this activity practically disappear over the past 40 years. It is sad that we don't have the 27th Lancers, Bressed Sacramento, Anaheim Kingsmen, Chicago Royal Airs and Vanguard and many more national contenders around to entertain us in the art of real marching and bugle playing. It is time for DCI to change its name to World Marching Bands. The term Drum and Bugle Corps no longer applies here. Perhaps, DCA can help us out and take in the corps who want to remain true drum and bugle corps.

Those costumes, can't even call them uniforms, look absolutely terrible.
