One thing nostalgic that I remember from the windows 95 and 98 days is that the message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" used to scare people into thinking the cops were about to arrest them because of the word "illegal", first thing that comes to mind about that word is something that's against the law.

These RAMBUS desktops are actually extremely rare and sought after these days. You should be glad you own one! And I also found out that midnight grey style case can add a lot of retro value to these things and sells for hundreds on ebay. Bought a GX280 yesterday for cheap and then I realised that

@@jonathaneberlein5650 Well I think it's safe to say that while typical ppl think these things just depreciate forever, I think it's not true. the low point in price comes after about 13-15 years of use when it becomes no longer fast enough for daily tasks, and then afterwards it starts to pick up in price as it becomes more and more suitable for retro experiences and when there isn't many of this stuff left. But this is only for quality stuff that actually lives for that long and still give a mostly reliable experience.

Billy, I’ve also had problems with the usb2.0 pci cards rendering the system un-bootable. For me it was a IRQ issue. It would share the same IRQ as the sound card. So what I did, was install everything and leave the sound card for last. After installing the sound card drivers, I would check the device manager for conflicts before restarting. If I did find some id, switch IRQ of the usb card. It loves to mess with the sound card IRQ.

I still have it on Windows 98 second editon. I could say that this PC in this video is probably about the newest you can go for a Windows 98 PC, maybe a PC from 2001 or 2002 is about the newest you can go for Windows 98. My other Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with the 1.5 ghz Pentium M, I was thinking about putting Windows 98 on it, but then I figured that that laptop is a bit too new for 98, its from early 2005.

The Nostalgia Mall on that same laptop I also tried to install the 32 bit Windows 10, but it seems to be just a bit too old to meet the requirement of nx instructions, however it's a little too new for a Dos based os like Windows 98 or ME. I actually put Linux Lite on mine. However on any PC that's at least a core 2 duo or better from 2007 or later, I've seen that Windows 10 will work fine on those. For a retro Windows 98 PC, I think 2001 is about the newest you can go with that.

Those Dell clamshell cases sure are a pain in the butt but still they are solid at the same time
Also the noise generated is due to the spindle lock mech being loose on the CD drive (is the plastic thingy located at the top case of the drive that clips via magnets on the spindle when there's a CD inserted or not), with time it loses it's magnetism but that's common for worn out drives
If you have a broken drive you can pull the spindle magnet thingy and use it to test questionable optical drives to see if they have spinning or reading issues

I'm curious to why you are using Acronis OS? FDISK with Windows 98 can take care of the partitioning and Windows XP's NTLDR can take care of the boot menu of which OS you want to boot into. Install Windows 98 first and then Windows XP (you can do XP first but you would have to boot back into the XP setup disc and run the fixmbr and fixboot commands in the recovery console as Windows 98 would overwrite the MBR). I just don't see the need for a third party bootloader unless you are doing a multibooting two Windows 9x OSes together(which is ironic because of what I am going to tell you next).
Anyways, I found your channel because of one of you subscribers named Aldwin Panny mentioned you in a comment while we were discussing one of my videos two weeks ago(I'm currently working on videos that show that you can multiboot multiple versions of Windows on 1 partition). He first told me of another bootloader(sorry can't remember the name of it) and I told him that I wasn't planning on using a third party bootloader and then he mentioned you using Acronis OS.
If it wasn't for him I wouldn't of found and subscribed to your channel(I also subscribed to his channel too). Hopefully you can answer why you prefer using the 3rd party bootloaders over what Microsoft has preinstalled in their OSes

Simply put, drive letters. With Acronis, I'm able to use both 98 and XP as the C drive. I can't stand to use Windows on any other drive letter. Makes installing software more of a hassle. Unfortunately, using Windows's built-in boot loader can cause issues with that.
