Its cool knowing that Hel had the opportunity to kill Jack in his sleep. Securing Maras victory when she had the chance but at the time thought he was too insignificant to kill.
Its also cool that the Hel we played was planeing to rebel aginst Mara but got cut short by her clone who lacks er memories which means the hel we fight isnt the hel we played as choosing to die on her own terms.

It's either that hel couldn't see jack because ghost runners can't be detected and that hel, being a machine, won't deal with anything that doesn't look like a threat
      Or...
Maybe, hel didn't actually want to kill jack, I think the hel we play as was already sentient the moment it was released, it merely carried out Mara's orders because it couldn't do anything else, but it wanted to rebel against her, and perhaps she sensed that us, the ghostrunner, could actually stop mara, perhaps hel saw us as the last hope at destroying mara, they way hel says "no... There's nobody here" is just too human, it's like she's blatantly protecting jack
Not just that, the level itself is called "my friend"

I have a theory on Hel and our Ghostrunner Jack, feel free to read it and share your own opinions and insight.
First off I like how if you watch this and then the main game you get the feeling that the Hel unit you play as actually uploaded the necessary files, data or whatever to awaken Jack. Hence when you look at the convo between Jack and Architect somewhere in 42:00 or so minutes into the game (Recruits video of him playing the main game no deaths).
Architect: One of you must have used Amida elevator right before Mara's insurgents disabled the internal security (something that happens when the Mara starts wiping out the Climbers)
    Jack: Another Ghostrunner
Architect: It could have been you.
Even in the level Echoes Architect says that Jack is showing Aberrant behaviours much like Hel who was also showing similar behaviour when fulfilling her mission to capture Bakunin alive. She captured him alive just in such a way that he would die if the sword was removed. Also Architect refers to Hel as his counterpart and if you get the definition of counterpart it again implies a relation between the 2. On top of this he calls it a cheap knockoff meaning that the software data Mara used to create Hel is also a cheap knockoff therefore incompatible with the original Ghostrunner hence why Jack cannot properly comprehend the cybervoid specifically meant for the Ghostrunners. This ties into the part where Jack interfaces with Hel after the boss fight (In her own image) the cybervoid looks more like a coastal area (trees, sunset/sunrise colour, water, cliffs, etc.) like Jack can process and see Hels cybervoid better than the Ghostrunners cybervoid and therefore implies that Jack's internal systems (software) has more in common with the Hels than Ghostrunners. Whereas his external systems (hardware) are more Ghostrunner than Hel.
This implies that Hel was working to kill Mara since the beginning (violently punching the capsule even though it was about to open on its own - the opening cutscene). In the mission called "My friend" it look like when she was uploading data when she put her hand out to his head, the words said INIT (25:00) in computer it means "initialization " like "initialize activation/reboot protocols" or something like that. At the end of the DLC the convo between them sounds like this was not the first time she rebelled therefore Mara would obviously prepare for it just in case it happens again this time after she removed the restraint module. Hence why the other Hel unit was already in position to stab her in the back literally.
Therefore with all these preparations Hel made ahead of time she knew she would succeed in her revenge hence why at the end she starts with "You are done". But at the end she realized she could not live to get her revenge and thus she made sure to kill herself to ensure that Mara doesn't find out that she reactivated a Ghostrunner to help her get her revenge ("My friend" pretty much gambling that he kills Mara for her). The level was even called "A place to rest" implying that Hel has rebelled several times before, was tortured into submission, released again and this was just another one of Hels "i want revenge for the torture" but with the twist that she actually planned ahead this time and got the Ghostrunner back on his feet to help her only to realize that this was as far as she could go. Hel shows that she remembers her past and therefore has a mindset and personality but was more focused on the torture Mara forced her into. Hence why Mara was asking her questions at the start and why Hel's answers were giving off a very "I'm more interested in revenge" vibe. Like her answers with the train and the 3 VIPs and her reasons for the answer.
By destroying herself Hel made sure that Mara didn't know know that Jack was a Ghostrunner and she helped he wake up to get revenge. Thus Mara wouldn't go after him before he wakes up but realize overtime that a ghostrunner is reactivated and is on its way to kill her (recall that Hel never mentioned that she found a Ghostrunner just that she couldn't find anyone in the cutscene "My friend"). On top of that she makes it sound like the Architect was the one who somehow reawakened Jack on his own completely ignoring the possibility that another part like the Climber or Hel could have played a role.
Also she calls the Ghostrunner a puppet just like Hel.
Finally in the last mission of the main game Architect says while trying to take over Jacks body "It's the imperfections that make you defy me" just like how Hel constantly obeys Mara but uses every loophole in Mara's orders to defy her and request to have her restraints removed (Bakunin's "capture" and the final boss fight).

Huh... interesting theory, who knew Hel could be an unlikely ally

    • @Siwwy
      @Siwwy Před rokem +27

Okay so on paper a lot of what you've said make sense but the end result happened in different circumstances from your theory. Let me explain.
Let me start with Jack's Behavior:
Jack is a Ghostrunner made from metal and flesh, unlike Hel who's entirely made out of metal.
The reason why they decided to make Ghostrunner out of metal and flesh is because a biological brain can cope with how a Ghostrunner is supposed to function (Source: Hel - Audiolog #8 The women talking explains how without a biological brain the artificial cortex will keep firing and would flood the GR system with an infinite stream of emotions. In short this means without a brain you're building anger issues in a Killer robot - Hel)
Thus why Hel will eventually build unusual behavior as you play through the campaign. More on in a little bit.
Continuing with Jack after he got his left arm ripped and thrown off the tower he was repaired by the Climbers. The repairs he undergo were makeshift and improvised, a lot of parts were not found so in the end his programming went to a mess, this has caused him to gain sentient. His brain after the repairs is himself for once and not controlled by the Cybervoid.
Thus why he had developed unusual behavior like the Architect said.
Now about Jack waking up. It wasn't Hel that uploaded files inside him or anything. It was Infact the Architect!
Ghostrunners (Like Jack, not Hel) and the Cybervoid are supposed to be linked. If a Ghostrunner isn't connected to the cybervoid they're going to be offline. Source: In the level The Climb (Level 3) The Architect explains that a Ghostrunner cannot exist without the Cybervoid. This is why Jack never woke up after Zoey finished repairing him. The Architect knew that Jack was undergoing repairs long before Hel found Jack. The Architect then linked himself to Jack to connect Jack back to the Cybervoid and thus he awakens.
Furthermore at the end of the game when you've killed the Architect Jack shuts down. You hear the system saying "Architect shell core file missing" And not "Hel shell core file missing"
      Now moving on with Hel.
As I already explained Hel is a killer robot with anger issues that is why she has to be replaced regularly. There are 12 Hel units, 1 active at a time (For Ghostrunners like Jack, 100 total, all active at a time). How it works is when a Hel unit gets released for a mission they have to be tested (The first level of Hel) The Hel unit will be given questions and she has to answer them, at answers she gives will tell her current mental state. (Source: Hel Level 1. After waking up you're given a set of question by the Keymaster and at the end of the level the Facility system says "Hel unit is at risk of further mental destabilization")
After being used multiple times they will become crazy and needs to be replaced. By replaced I mean killed, another Hel (That's new) will kill the old Hel and download all her Data and the process repeats
Now I wanna get one last point right and that's with Hel and Jack. Ghostrunners are basically just Cybervoid agents in short. Hel's purpose was to destroy the Climbers and The Ghostrunner's purpose was to maintain peace and navigate through the Cybervoid. Both Jack and Hel are ghostrunners which means THEY ARE COMPATIBLE software wise. Their hardware on the other hand don't have to be the same. (Source: Level 15 - The Architect explains that not all Ghostrunners were the same, some were different, some had unique abilities, some had experimental features)

@@Siwwy This is the beauty of theorizing you come up with something that makes sense in your head or builds a framework to explain something your having trouble understanding.
I knew there was little to go on with the Hel and Jack connection especially since it was just one scene. After I rewatched the main games scenes (Level 3 specifically) like you mentioned made my theory have less sense to some degree. Because that just leaves me confused as to why Hel just raised her hand and looked like she was either downloading or uploading something to Jack.
At the same time though Hel is as I can tell or comprehend is the metal the synthetic of the Ghostrunner separated from the flesh her biology hence why for me her claim of being tortured feels like it makes sense since she was essentially ripped from a single complete entity to half an entity that lacks its moderator (the biological brain). And like you mentioned her GR system is being flooded by the infinite stream of emotions hence further validating the torture part of her final monologue at the end of the DLC.
You cleared parts of my theory that I had doubts on whether they hold any truth, debunked parts I was confident were true but left some other parts as just in a state of confusion like I mentioned with the hand. But I do find it confusing as to how repairing Jacks severed hand = incompatibility with the Cybervoid like the Ghostrunners GR system or biological brain isn't in that specific hand. The only thing that makes sense here for me is Zoey's attempts to reactivate him may be the source of the Jack not being able to connect to the Cybervoid or the Architect not being able to connect to Jack. An either or if you will.
Honestly now as I'm typing this I feel like Zoey's tampering led to the Architect being unable to connect to Jack or Jack naturally reconnecting to the Cybervoid and Hel just uploaded a program to scrubbed his system so the Architect could connect to Jack. This again makes some sense to me and I'm just grasping at straws again. It's just that we know the Keymaster was taking Ghostrunner parts. I just feel like they are, along with the Keymasters own personally invented parts are what Hel is made out of. Hence an amalgamation of the pure synthetic of several different Ghostrunners and whatever else was needed to make up the missing body parts (limbs, hip, neck, eyes, etc.) of Hel.
At the end of the day I'm just trying to figure out what is happening in that scene with Hel and Jack during the DLC and justify her behaviour there. A destabilizing brain for me would have behaved differently when seeing a Ghostrunner covered in whatever Jack was covered in when she was looking for the leader of the Climbers.

@@denithwijesinghe4128 I just wanted to clarify some things in your theory, I also have a bunch of theories but feel free to believe what you think is right. Now you did mention a couple of things that I think happened otherwise.
-This part is totally based off my opinion so tell me what you think. Hel was built for 1 purpose only. Destroy the Climbers and Destroy cybervoid mainframe, her reason to exist is for destruction so it's only natural that she was built fully out of metal (There can be many more reasons to why she was made out of metal like keeping costs to manufacture 1 Hel), she never had any biological parts to begin with so her "suffering" don't exactly make sense. Hel does disliked obeying to Mara and that's what she meant at the end of the game "Spent years in chains" because Hel just wants to kill despite her restrictions.
Now another part I want to clarify is Jack. During the repairs Zoey did to him she modified a LOT of things, not just the arm, The human body is incredibly complex so a lot of repairs had to be done internally, Muscle tissues, respiratory system, nervous system ect. On top of all that the kill switch of jack (In the brain) was removed. The arm that Zoey gave Jack is the Chikara IV Implant, a powerful arm that requires an atma chip (Standard Neural Implant) Which is found in the brain. The Architect says that we already have an Atma chip so Zoey must've tweaked Jack's brain in order to sync his new arm to the Atma. The tweaking in Jack's brain is what (Possibly) resulted Jack in gaining sentient is where I was getting at.
Lastly why wasn't Jack naturally reconnecting to the Cybervoid? A lot of things contributed to it, after Jack's repairs he became incompatible with the Cybervoid (What the Architect says at the end of "A look inside") another thing that could've resulted in Jack not reconnecting to the Cybervoid was that the Cybervoid itself has been fractured into countless pieces, broken apart like puddles of water, like the Architect also said in "The climb". Once again Hel had nothing to do with the Architect reconnecting to Jack because her whole point is to destroy it, it's a command she cannot disobey. The Architect knew about Jack's existence long before Hel and was waiting for the Climbers to repair him so he can connect Jack back to the Cybervoid himself.
I hope that in GR2 a lot of these theories will be clarified officially and fill a lot of plot holes we've had in GR1

    • @aaronplays_
      @aaronplays_ Před 10 měsíci +4

So I just read the theories in the replies of this comment and I think the story is purposefully written this way to have multiple hooks for sequel. You can see for yourself how many questions you're getting as you discussed this with the other person. Hel definitely did something that supported Jack, not sure if it was waking up or was it cleaning his systems.
Project Hel was based on project Ghostrunner, so I'm hoping Mara isn't stupid enough to not have data about Ghostrunners in Hel's database. From the main game, we know that the Ghostrunners' swords are very important piece of equipments to the point that not all GRs will be as efficient as they are with the swords made specifically for that unit. If Hel has data on GRs, then she would definitely be able to identify a GR sword, see a cybernetics lab and a hidden cyborg body and put 2 and 2 together. But she chose not to report and just threw the sword in with the body. Besides these, I feel like Architect was surprised himself that GR74 is online
So here goes my theory: GRs are made to be operated by human brain, but Mara wanted to remove anything human about them for Hel. So, what if Mara needed a digital form of a human brain and got someone scanned for it? From what we know about human brain scanning IRL, a person's character is made from the firing patterns of their neurons. So to scan a brain into digital form would require a person to go through all of the emotions a human possibly can, including pain, sorrow, torture, misery, depression, etc., which is obviously torture, even though they have to go through happy emotions too, because it's obviously fake. Mara is scrapping each unit as it shows disobedience, she's not letting it evolve and process its emotions. Every Hel unit remembers being mentally (and possibly physically) tortured from the scanning process and ends up vengeful. Instead of making the scans act on their own and deal with the feelings, Mara is likely replacing components of the scan, which is why we play as a clever vengeful one, because Mara removed all other outward characteristics displayed by units that were not subtle in their plans and actions.
During such extreme tortures, people tend to start remembering their memories with their closest ones. I think Hel uploaded the characteristics of someone close to her, someone in her memories who was what Jack is like. If Hel uploaded herself then that could send a warning to Mara, but if she uploaded something non-essential to the unit's functioning, she wouldn't care to know about it. I have no facts to support it, but I think it would be really cool if this is the case. Also, another small detail I noticed, which might be completely pointless, is that the subtitle for Architect's "You're... alive" has the speaker marked in red, which is the colour we see from Hel's perspective. The speaker highlight colour in the subtitles from Jack's perspective is Yellow/Orange.
This theory is largely based on Rooster Teeth's Red vs Blue stories, where something similar happens. The show starts off as a funny machinima GMV that doesn't take itself seriously, but suddenly gets surprisingly deep and philosophical with aspects of existence and how people (or beings) deal with it. If you haven't watched it, it's available on CZcams for free and you should definitely watch it, at least till season 10. Things get weird after season 13, but the series will be ending soon with the original series creator being back to wrap things up.

I agree in a way, if I wanted a room of people dead, I'd choose hel. But in a fight with Jack it actually kinda makes sense he'd win. Jack is fantastic against projectiles like surge, and he's a better swordsman due to his superior programming. Doesn't leave Hel with much of a chance

  • @PerfectPencil

The world building in this game was so wild. In the main story and in this DLC, it doesn't seem to get good until near the end. The first 10ish hours of playtime is only held together by mechanics and raw game design. You really have to respect it for that. I'm glad they expanded on the world for the second game, so we could get more behind all this. Kind of disappointing that Hel never makes a return, though. Considering they all seem to eventually break free of Mara, its particularly odd that not even 1 makes it into the second game. You'd think at least one would live, even if just in the cybervoid...but yet its like they never existed. Disappointing.
