As a fellow EV owner I agree with Strad, the price of these fast chargers make owning them not financially beneficial anymore and the time wasted is ludicrous

Bro wats this under ur comment
Your all climate change deniers and white supremacist if you don't blindly support ev's
Not to mention the electricity most are charging with is coal sourced and the batteries to make the vehicles are child slave labor sourced. Anyone who still thinks there is a moral highground that comes with EV's has been deceived...
@@dmoneyindustry7428 bitch chill
I'm feeling your pain on this one! Sophia is a trooper for sticking through it, so sorry for you guys and the nightmare experience. Pricing of charging, the time it takes, the likelihood it doesn't work... the chances that this can be made to work for everyone in only a decade from now; almost zero.
Hey, Tim. Keep up the good work!
Combustion FTW🙌🏾🙌🏾😂
Idk about anywhere else in the world, but the grid here in the US is not nearly ready to handle that
I think small combustion engines paired with a hybrid system will be the only way to have all vehicles have batteries
This is why Toyota is sticking with the hybrid model instead of jumping the hype train.
It’s crazy how different of an experience you can get just by not having access to the supercharger network. I just completed a 5000 mile road trip to Wisconsin and back in my Model Y with zero charging issues at all. Didn’t matter that I drove through a blizzard with 35 mph winds in near sub zero temperatures, pulling into each charging station with 5% or less each time for the fastest charging. I was able to be 100% confident in the supercharger network, and in the ability of my Tesla to charge. An average stop for me during this trip was 15 minutes, and it cost me half of what a gas car would’ve cost. Other EV manufacturers are just so far behind on so many fronts it’s crazy.
No worries. Soon you'll be seeing these hummers at superchargers...
@@JohnDavid888 You nailed the biggest question when it comes to Tesla opening up its network.
When you look at a Tesla charging station, no screen. All the communication is done with a flashing led by the charge port and the screen in the car. How will this work with 2rd party vehicles? I would assume a phone app would allow you to communicate with Tesla's charging network.
The next thing is availability. I can see Tesla owners getting upset if they see a Ford or worse a GM vehicle charging and there are not enough space for your Tesla. I do know that Tesla is putting the hammer down on getting more chargers out there.
I am also looking for the 1st Fast Food and/or convenience store chain to do a partnership with Tesla and install a handful of chargers at each of their locations at major intersections (interstate exits). I expect this to happen before 2023 draws to a close.
Sounds like 12 minutes too long.
supercharger network is opening up to all EVs
Opening the Tesla Supercharger network is both a blessing & curse to other OEMs.
Blessing as their vehicles are less efficient and they desperately need a solid charging network.
Curse will be owners of competing EVs will see Tesla's up close and in person. Here is where all the places where the OEMs fall short in comparison to Tesla will be seen.
Overall efficiency & range
Charging speed
Infotainment system
Overall integration
Looked at all the EV’s and went with Tesla because of their charging network. Glad you guys are safe!

Thank you for sharing this experience with people. I owned an EV for 2 years (in a very EV friendly city) and found that over the years the charger eco system actually got worse, not better. A lot of the chargers around my city began to stop working and with more people now own EV's, the chargers that do work are always occupied. I cut my losses and went back to a gas engine.
Smart move!
Thats why non-Telsa EVs are good for one thing: local trips and charging at home. At 35k miles on my Nissan Leaf I've saved over 50% of the purchase price of the vehicle in gas savings vs my previous vehicle. I charge exclusively in my home garage and pay next to nothing for power in my area, so I drive around for 1/10th the cost of gas in my old SUV
@@jermwerty I think the same cost saving scenario is true even if driving a Prius, not necessarily an EV. Driving a car that gets 50 MPG costs only a couple hundred dollars more per year than charging an EV at home.
@@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444 This is why I'm surprised by the fact that the Chevy Volt didn't take off. A reverse Hybrid is what we needed for the next 20 years. EVs can't become mainstream until 2040, infrastructure takes time. Tesla has done a good job, but it doesn't make them mainstream.
@@kbenti I loved the Chevy Volt when it was under development. I regularly visited and posted on their "gm-volt" fan website. The only problem with the 1st generation was the gas mileage. 35-40 MPG is not very good. A 120 mile trip in a Prius uses slightly over 2 gallons of gas. A 120 mile trip in a Volt uses the same amount of gas PLUS a full battery. The longer the trip, the more the Volt would fall behind in economics, because if its lower gas mileage. The 2nd gen Volt, 2016 and up (stopped in 2018 I think), was a big improvement. GM didn't seem like they were fully emotionally invested in the car.
If i went through anything like what you experienced with an EV I would be putting it up for sale the next day! That was pure 100% b.s.
Everything he did and said is, indeed, bs.
There are a couple thing he got wrong here. 1. The Tesla charging network is now available to drivers of all evs. 2. You are driving the most inefficient electric vehacle in the world. 3. When your driving a very inefficient vehicle with a huge battery it is expensive compared to small gas cars. Compare it too a gas or diesel hummer and it will be cheaper, especially if you charge at home. 4. You may have fixed all your problems if you would have simply disconnected the 12 volt battery and reconnected it.
YUP! NEVER AGAIN! 😑
@@RiosMensRights Lets say everything you said is true ....just the thought at having to sit in the charging station "fast charging" my vehicle for 3 hours to get 300 miles is INSANE to me. I fill up 300 miles worth of gas in my car in 3-4 minutes. FAST CHARGING btw LMAO ....EV's more like EWWW

As a Tesla owner, this video made me appreciate the supercharger network so much more. It's nuts that other manufactures are spending all this time building EVs but not the chargers in order to support them.
Which in return means you have a useless vehicle that'll get you stranded all the time. The cold weather isn't good on the batteries either and a big heavy vehicle like the Hummer would definitely struggle with all of this.
I think its the only viable way to "keep up/catch up" to tesla, they can barely get the car side of things right. A bigger company like Chevy with the money though...idk if they got the excuses, im talking bout other brands like rivian/lucid who'd be in a much better position by relying on those 3rd party chargers for now until they can at least get somewhat on their feet with some car sales. The other thing is it would be such a waste of space and money if every company had to have hundreds of charging stations, thats why a 3rd party one isnt a terrible idea, but its not a great one either...as it could be using old tech thats holding back your newer vehicles.
Tesla is only able to do it bc they got to the game SOOOOOO much earlier than the rest
Yeah, for gasoline cars every manufacturer built their own gas stations...
As a non ev owner I never appreciated how valuable the Tesla charge network is in the equation of what car to buy.
yep that $19 spent on the hummer would be a 200+ mile charge on a Tesla. The hummer ev is such a huge vehicle its mpg is probably equivalent to a diesel truck.
I have found Tesla Superchargers consistently reliable. I might encounter a single stall that did not work, but I could just pull over to the next one, and it worked fine. However, third party charging stations have been extremely hit-and-miss, with almost a 50% failure rate. I am really thinking Tesla's opening of their Supercharger network to other EVs will be what it takes for electric cars in general to go mainstream.
I feel your pain Stradman. Ran into the same situation with my mach-e. Quickest trade in for a Tesla.
czcams.com/video/ziPPXrV2Ths/video.html
why limit yourself? The routes and trips you take in ev are limited compared to gas. Your "ease of access" reasoning says you should just buy a gas car lol. I ran into problems with my tesla like many others and like many others I have switched back to gas. Can you imagine the military having to rely on ev? lol
@@uraniumcranium2613 LOL you have never driven a Tesla let alone own one. Military is going to use PHEV hybrid anyways that run on various JP mix Fuel. Thank you for being the only automotive CZcamsr that does what you should do with a truck and give it smaller wheels and bigger tires instead of the other way around.
Facts.
Yeah he altered all factory settings by changing the factory wheels.. FACTS ! - TFL did the same with they'r GMC Hummer ev swapping OEM wheels for bigger tires off-road wheels and they also documented everything on the TFL -youtube channel because the owner must take the truck and the other wheels to GM so they will sorted out if the size the owner wants can be set to be 'recognized by the truck' that has electrical controlled self-leveling suspension & software of truck, otherwise the truck it may behave awkward consuming energy faster, drain the battery quicker, stop charging sessions & giving more errors on dash screens..
Is Whistlin Diesel a joke to you?
shame it broke his suspension lift but if the reports changing the wheels on a hummer can prevent it from charging are true then it needs to be recalled.

That's so crazy.
And also so incredibly interesting watching this video through the lens of diffusion of innovations and theory of constraints. This video is gold, man.
After using 3 different charging stations that aren't working, I think the problem has to be the hummer. It seems so unlikely that many stations have failed in a row. The odds are astronomical. It's as though nobody has serviced them in years.

You got to preheat or chill your battery before charging to get the maximum charge speed. Plus it charges slower the more "filled up" your battery is.

Great Information, be wary of owning electric in the cold. I lived in Rapid City, South Dakota and wouldn't have thought one second about owning an EV mainly because of the extreme cold and what that does to the degradation of the battery and holding a charge. There was no real infrastructure outside of on Tesla Supercharger station at the mall. I live in Los Angeles now and have owned an EV for a few months now. I charge at home and at work. I use Electrify America fast charge when I travel mainly to Seattle, San Francisco, or Vegas. I have never had any issue connecting or charging. I've seen many GMC and Ford's have major connectivity issues at charging stations. I do agree there is range anxiety, so if there is not an extensive EV infrastructure I would not buy electric. Or go with a Tesla. I own a Mercedes EQE now downsized from the EQS.

Thank you Stradman for being honest about how horrible the electric car issues are. We are not there yet.
Just came across this video. The frustration is palpable in that there is absolutely NO reliability via these 3rd party chargers. It is no wonder the manufacturers have reached their patience threshold and partnered with Tesla to gain access to the Supercharger network and bring reliability to consumers. I have taken multiple 1-2K roadtrips in my Model 3 and Y and have not had any issues with the SC network. Even at full capacity, charging is a breeze. The HUMMER EV truck is stunning, the wrap and wheel tire combo is killer, but in the end, there is no point if you can’t rely on the chargers at all. Insane! This is why Tesla currently has a stranglehold on the EV market. Crazy that the major manufacturers havent collaborated to solve this problem. Also, Hummer is super sweet, but a 200+kWh battery has its drawbacks. This new model also has a crazy amount of first gen problems.
Idk about America but in Europe most of the (atleast the newer ones, about 60% of all) tesla superchargers are ccs compatible, which means you can charge alot of other brands (the entire vw group, bmw, hyundai, Honda, kia, and alot more) and it works pretty well compared to 3rd party chargers.

Try to lower the tire pressure to 15psi or 20 for more traction 👍🏻✌🏻
I noticed you keep tapping the screen of the charging station a lot when the handshake between station and vehicle is performed. depending on the screen set up this might be interpreted as ‘aboard’. hence Tesla charger have no screen you could touch and the handshake is uninterrupted.
You’re raising a lot of good points about the EV “life”. This video should be shared so that weaknesses with the underlying infrastructure are a) acknowledged and b) addressed
When you walked up to the hotel in the snow, tired and cold, and all those Tesla superchargers were lit up like Christmas…. 😂 That’s good content right there!
Elon should send Strad a cyber truck for showing how the Hummer performed and charged
How much more range will you get if you get a portable charger which you can use with fuel? Will it be more convenient even though appearance wise it wont? To have the option for soler pannels when camping or off raoding and then fuel option to charge while on the side of the road or near a gas station.
I'll wait for the Rivian version 3.0, and thank you for making my EV buying decision so easy. The EV charging network is still in its infancy and I am shocked that is still not that great in the year 2023.
Wow! Beautiful video by both of you! You saved me $150k, because your prior Hummer EV vids won me. But without consistent and predictable charging, the Hummer EV turns into a nightmare. GM should pay your tow bill and hotel. So glad you made it back safe!
Anyone that knows EVs has known that Hummer was always just a novelty like the brand has always been. Just insanely terrible for eMPG, charging, etc etc. Nothing made for any normal daily use at all.
Time to get the TRX man!
@@kaustubhkashyap1081 He moved it out of the way to pull the hummer out of the garage. You know he wishes he took the TRX instead!
Super weird Stradman broke up with your daughter yet you still comment on his videos like a 12 year old fan girl. LOL

I honestly love the way it looks, now they just need to put a Duramax in it and they will actually sell a bunch of them 😂
Buddy, I was just about to say the same thing lol, gm should've made a gas model diesel and then electric, but a diesel would rock!
I was thinking any engine would do putting in it and get the electrical rubbish out be the first to do it Stradman lol 😆 😂 🤣
👏👏👏👏👍
@@PhotoDaveJax 👍👍
At the most, should have made it a hybrid, but full electric...well we have all seen the result.
On ICE trucks, bigger tires will impact your range, so im sure the same applies to EVs. Your chick is a REAL trooper, Dude youre winning
I stayed at an mountainside Airbnb that had a 25 deg climb up with some blind corners. Getting up the first time was terrifying especially in a rental.
easily one of the best vlogs to date. I live the wrap color, Moab is beautiful, and i love that you kept it real throughout. as a bonus, props for making it official and going public with sophia! you guys are both a lot happier around each other, she stayed happy and supportive through that whole experience, she a keeper strad👏
I believe You have to go to a dealership to program the Hummer to work with new size tires, TFL Channel Hummer EV also keeps breaking everytime.
Evs are a joke.
Tyler Hoover, from Hoovies Garage, got rid of his Ford F-150 Lightning EV, because of the same issue, towing a trailer didn’t help Tyler’s situation either! 😑 👎 EV’s suck!
New wrap looks so good!
I have heard that the one thing that isn't really talked about with EV's is that the range of the vehicles as well as the charging times drops dramatically in cold weather climates. As much as 40% I hear which is insane if true! Seems like hybrids are the way to go for now.
All vehicles drop their range in cold weather. My hybrid usually gets 32-36 mpg (she's an old Ford hybrid) with warm 28°C temps, but the 5°C winter temps drops it to 27-29 mpg.
$771 for a tow?!? 😳 How do you own like a dozen cars and not have a AAA tow card? That’s an essential part of being a car guy!
sometimes AAA doesn't access all parts of the US! he was in the middle of nowhere so that could be a problem too.
I doubt AAA tows a 9,000 lb hummer
Plus the way he uses towing services, Triple A called me when I had used them 4 times in a couple months telling me that they may have to cancel my membership due to overuse or abuse. I was a 20 plus year member at the time.
Hopefully Strad gives an update on why his Hummer was showing the high charge error (hopefully not caused by low coolant for the battery) , crazy time 23 hours to get home, would be interesting to know the mileage in 23 hours.
It's actually a 3hr 40m drive of 230-240 miles
I hope he shows this too bc I’m genuinely curious!
You think he wouldn’t??
@@PapaBlackSheeep jeez that’s far it’s crazy they made it back there in like 2-3 days whilst the car was having a temper tantrum
@@PapaBlackSheeep Thank you for the update.
If you watch the fast lane (tfl) CZcams channel they had the same issue with the battery when they went off road in the hummer but there shocks wouldn't stay up there's kept lowering they did it with regular tires and bigger tires it did it with both
Charger dependency dictates your actual range is always 1/2 of the mfg stated. Throw in load or towing reductions and your at 1/4 range or 164 miles round trip or 82 miles one way of a 332 stated range. On a farm or inner city is the only practical application for the non-Tesla EV truck/suv market.
Love that you can speak the truth honestly and aren't pushed around and bought! Thanks for being real strad 🤙
Well this definitely made for an incredible story, that James is going to tell his grandkids every Christmas.
"you know, back in my day, I had to walk 2000 miles, up 10 mountains, just to get an extra mile of electricity in my $160,000 car!" - Old man James
Why are, you using, SO MANY, COMMAS.
This has kinda been made obsolete now that the manufacturers have agreed to switch to the NACS charger, but it's cool to see that dealer took this problem into consideration and decided to find a solution
Im going to totally guess the reason why it wouldnt charge, the cold effected the voltage of the battery and the charger denied the charge access as it didnt meet parameters set. If that's the case then the bats need passive heating to stabilize temps.
