NO PHONES policy at the best nightclub in the world!

- Hi nightclub in Ibiza has introduced a no phones policy on the dance floor on 2 of their weekly nights for the summer 2024 season however what is the real issue with nightclubs and this culture of phones and facing forward.
Completely agree. The issue with clubs like Hi in the theatre room is the production they put on and the sheer volume of people they allow in. Just turns into a ‘show’ with folk stood on the spot squashed shoulder to shoulder. Look at the crowds in Hi and Ushuaia, folk are not enjoying themselves. Ive been and seen it for myself. Also no one dares enjoy themselves due to cameras everywhere. Don’t dare have a good time or look a bit wasted or you will be a meme tomorrow…

@@djkarlthomas I'm going to show my age, but after my first club event where I was the DJ, my car broke down, and I had to use a telephone box to ring the RAC.

Listener from Naarm/Melbourne Australia, the filming phenomenon has also reached a crisis point here, sad to see the energy and intimacy leave the dancefloor due to people filming but we do have a few event companies incorporating a ‘no phone policy’ taping up cameras , which makes such a huge difference, warms me to see everyone just immersed in the music and dance amongst themselves. I think the real issue is not so much the culture but the type of punter that will attend certain parties. The true lovers of the music don’t want to film because they understand etiquette. The issue arises with new punters that don’t understand true club etiquette. It is important to remind attendees with a list of rules/guidelines that outline the clubs expectations but to also have a good time and not worry about your phones. My colleagues and I implement strong a ‘no phone policy’ at every event. We will sometimes still have a designated videographer, lurking the dancefloor to capture candid moments of the dj and attendees. It provides a good archive of memories from the night that is of high quality, unlike mobile phones.
Additionally, I believe as much as it helps to have ‘viral’ moments for the success of a club , a place such as berghain operates and thrives off its name. It hasn’t given in to the nature of technology and still inforces a ‘no phone policy’ & it shows how important it is. Having an event with no punter pov footage is more powerful in my opinion because if the people have a memorable experience they can explain it!!! Word of mouth is a hell of a thing…the lack of footage provokes FOMO which is an important part of getting attendees into a club. If they see a video from the club they were intending to go to and its not busy they will assume its not worth attending. But in reality it could be a beautiful energy on the dancefloor, its hard to capture the pure and raw feelings on the dancefloor if its on a shitty iphone with abysmal audio recording.

I agree with everything you said mate. I still remember being at a festival about 8 years ago and someone next to me said the same thing - ‘why are people filming, they’re not going to watch it ever again’. Phones weren’t really used that much back then either, but it’s crazy because it wasn’t that long ago! 👀
Crazy isn’t it how it’s changed! I’m just not a fan of the phone culture nowadays but it is what it is
Yeah, 100%, right? That's why I've started doing themed club nights for soul, Motown, house disco, and dance music from the 1960s through the 2000s. I kind of retired from nightclubs about 5 years ago because of the same thing. I find that the crowds that I get now really enjoy themselves and don't seem to mess around with cameras. in the same way. Plus, after the cost of getting security on and making £800 or £900 a night, now I only have to work two or three nights a month.

Yes, it's going well, but that's because I do each theme now once every two months, so I'm not overexposing myself to each different market. And I would recommend to other DJs that they find a niche in the market and do something similar, because once you find that type of music that works for you, you can make a lot more money by selling tickets at the venue.

How does it impact your ability to read the crowd?
Perhaps because you can’t get a sense for what music people are actually enjoying…if they are just stood there frozen to the spot.

Who cares about a terrible video. Most of the big events do professionally produced videos you can go back and watch on CZcams anyway so just enjoy the moment :)
