  • The Australian Bunya Tree drops magnificent, massive cones... some bigger than a human head! Inside is full of the tastiest nuts - like a pine nut only 100X. Learn here how to open the cone and prepare the nuts to eat. Absolutely delicious.

    Just a hose cutter from Supercheap auto or tools direct will make cutting the nuts in half alot safer and easier - I put some cooking oil in with ( not so much) salt to raise the temperature - great video thank you

    Dry the cone under the sun for one or two days, it become loose and very easy to take off

    I've got quite small cones half the size of yours, fingers crossed they're worth cooking

      Me too… good luck!!! Wondering, are you anywhere near SE Qld? I’ve never seen so many Bunya nuts for sale around here, it’s a bumper season. If you can make a trip up here you could score a boot full!

    Hello from India 🇮🇳♥. This looks yummy. How does it taste like ? Which food item can be the closest comparison in terms of taste ?

      Good morning
      Nothing really compares, but it’s closest flavour would be a pine nut. It’s size is much,much bigger!

    Hi thanks for your video. What's wrong with the floating ones? I have about a third that are floating. These nuts have been have been sitting out of the cone for approx 2 weeks.... waiting to be cooked. Are they still edible?

      I’m not entirely sure, maybe others could confirm, but as a guess they are starting to shoot and have slightly cracked open allowing air in, hence they float. Crack one open to check?!? Some of my recent batch were shooting and still tasted great.

    Silly question but do you strain after boiling and cooking or just leave overnight in the salted water?

    • @theamandaemblemexperiment8286
      @theamandaemblemexperiment8286 Před 6 měsíci +1

      It doesn’t really matter, I’ve done both… but it’s much easier to get them out of the shell if they are warm.

    I’ve got a few of these pine cones and opened 3 cones after I picked of the ground, I have opened them and inside they are all much more green and soft not like your ones, when are you supposed to open them up to get a harder nut?

    • @theamandaemblemexperiment8286
      @theamandaemblemexperiment8286 Před 2 lety +2

      In every cone there are about 120 nuts, I find 15-30% are not big enough to eat. Generally we wait until the nut “loosens” a little, in that it gets a slight space between each segment. This makes it easier to split open and seperate the nuts.
      Also, the smaller cones aren’t worth bothering with. The bigger ones (volleyball size or bigger) have the edible nuts. Hope that helps.
      Edit:
      This seasons bunya cones are huge, and most nuts inside are large/viable. So lucky!!!
      I guess just make sure you got the biggest Bunya cones possible.
