- With the advent of drilling, sinkholes are becoming more prevalent and dangerous compared to previous generations. Although some sinkholes occur naturally, the power and destruction they leave behind are nothing short of devastating.

Had a sinkhole open right next to me, small at first but got to probably forty feet wide and deep. Result of a messed up drainage pipe and weeks of rain. There are very few more surreal things than having the ground just go, "screw it, I'm out" and collapsing next to you. I just slowly backed up and watched the whole thing, didn't even notice how soaked I was from the rain.
As a Floridian, can confirm. Sinkholes everywhere. My grandfather actually rediscovered a "lost" sinkhole that had last been seen in the 1800's. It is called the Lake Eaton Sinkhole, and is one of the largest and oldest in the state. He fell down the sloped side and rolled halfway down before catching a sable palm trunk. Since finding it in the 1970's, the National Parks Service has built a boardwalk and stairs that lead down to a promenade deck at the bottom of the sinkhole.
I’ve been to the corvette museum it’s pretty amazing how big the sink hole was so many rare and beautiful cars down there
@@gagedaniel6793 lol, it's crazy to think that the ground can go all Biblically accurate, and straight up swallow people and things.

Even our country has faced sinkholes. Back in February 2015, eleven people (mostly women) died and 30 were injured while plowing in Yanggang on the border with China. As part of a bid by the government to improve the acidic soil, they were ordered to plow. Because of the very low temps at the time, much of it turned into ice, and thus they were ordered to dig until they found unfrozen soil. When the workers pierced through the frozen soil layer, the ground collapsed.
Shut up.
Begging for attention via rhetoric is pathetic and needy.
Grow up.
I love you so much my president
But as the great leader you were able to bring them back to life right?

i think it's incredibly important to point out that, at least across america (and a few other places in the world), many of the sinkholes popping up are NOT a surprise. Our abuse of underground aquifers is causing huge caverns of empty space to be created all across the country as water is siphoned out, largely for agricultural and/or wasteful use (like keeping gardens and lawns alive in fricken deserts). It's a topic I am not only extremely familiar with but extremely concerned by. The sinkholes are going to get worse and worse between climate change and our abysmal care of our own planet.
The sinkholes in the permafrost of Siberia fascinate me because often give us the gift of preserved fossils and frozen animals. It’s not good for the ecosystem but paleontology and climatology get something from it. The other side is places like Florida where I lived - massive sinkholes open on a dime just about anywhere with zero notice and can be unbelievably deep. Every year we’d hear on the news about someone or a couple people sleeping in their home at night the next day neighbors would awaken to the neighbor’s home being swallowed whole by a 600m deep chasm with them never being found or recovered. Sad stuff
Anything nature does on its own isn't bad for the ecosystem. It might change something but that's the world we live in.
@@michaelhowell2326 agreed. Last scientific article I read talked about us being due for another mini-ice age in the future. I’m not sure how this ties into global warming and ‘Team Thunberg’ but it’s just the earth going through natural cycles I guess. What I meant concerning the eco system is that mainstream science says that global warming is causing the permafrost to melt in the arctic which I guess includes much of Siberia. Whether this is true or not I’m not versed well enough on the subject to start spouting stuff like ‘how dare you take away my life and my future!!’ Greta is another subject for another time I guess 🤔
@@michaelhowell2326 Um, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was pretty bad for the dinosaurs' ecosystem. But pretty good for the one that replaced it.

G'Day Simon, I grew up in Mount Gambier in South Australia, the region is called "The Limestone Coast". There are abundant sinkholes in the area along with a plethora of incredible caves, both "Dry" and "Submerged".
One legendary sinkhole near Mount Gambier is located in the middle of a major road at a rural town called Allendale East. Over 100 years ago a horse and cart fell into the sinkhole when the road first collapsed. Over the years since, innumerable truck loads of Rocks, Spoil and Waste were dumped into the hole in the hope of filling it back up, all to no avail, each load would simply disappear.
For many years the road has diverted one lane to either side of the sinkhole, Northbound to the West and Southbound to the East.
Another great video from you and your team, thanks.
By the way, I have had to create a save file titled "Simon Whistler". Your content is great, Educational, Diverse, Humorous and always Entertaining. Cheers Mate.
This topic has a falling out with me. I can think of a “hole” lot of other topics I’d rather get to the bottom of. This video is definitely a downer. It’s the pits. It gave me a sinking feeling.
Just a quick FYI. The footage at 0:50 and from 9:10 is not from a sinkhole, but a Quick clay Landslide at Port Chibatao at Manaus, Brazil, that happened in 2010. Which are a whole other subject unto themselves, most famous of which is The Rissa Quick clay landslide.
Had a sinkhole open up under my lorry as I was driving. It was inches smaller than the width of my rear axle. It was this year in Redditch. Hairy getting back out making sure I stayed dead straight.
If you or a loved one was diagnosed with Mesothelioma you may be entitled to financial compensation.

Another fine job. Nice work guys
we had a sinkhole in nz in rotorua a couple months ago due to geothermal activity. it was only a couple feet wide, but it collapsed when a woman stood on the pavement, and it crumbled beneath her, dumping her into the extremely hot ground. she ended up with severe burns and injuries, as well as her husband, who tried to pull her out, but luckily they survived.
How is it that Mr Whistler's "Side Projects" videos are so consistently better than his "Mega Projects" vids? I reckon he is more relaxed, and that gives the works a more "engaging and friendly" style. There will definitely be no arguments in the comments below. 👇😁
So we're just ignoring 8 Chevrolet Corvettes in a giant sinkhole in Bolling Green? That might deserve it's own entire video.
What about the ones in the plateau in South America that also have their own ecosystems? Those are massive as well and if you're going into ancient history on it you might as well go with those also.
A separate video about amazing ecosystems in sinkholes would be great
Florida is so famous for its sinkholes, Ripley's Believe It or Not designed their Orlando location at a slant to make it look like it's falling into a sinkhole...genius move. And because sinkholes occur often there, just being there is like playing the lottery hoping for the best that a sinkhole doesn't form wherever you are. I have family in FL and I'm so glad I'm in NY instead, so I don't have to deal with those as well as the hurricanes (though we still get a hurricane from time to time like Sandy)
I would rather play sink hole-roulette in Florida than stay overnight in New York, especially if it's anywhere near NYC.

Would Batagaika crater in Siberia fall under the definition of 'sinkhole'? Because that thing's massive and it's still growing.

I live in Guatemala City. We're currently having an issue with sinkholes building under the ground in one of the municipalities next to the Capital.
I had totally forgotten about the big sinkhole mentioned here 🙃🙃 I only remembered the BIG AMOUNTS of volcanic sand that fell over the city from that eruption!! 🌋
As someone born and raised in Florida, it's fun knowing that at any random point you can get swallowed by the earth itself. I like to call it the ground lottery, because you have a rare chance of winning, and when you do it changes your life
I almost got sucked into a sink hole in Maui. I fell in and it just kept caving in and in and in i got out but it like sucked my leg in side it was trippy
I learned a lot about sinkholes. I also hope your blue finger gets its color back Simon. Lol
Where my dad lives here in the north east of england, a lot of small (a few metres at most) holes have opened up, all due to mining subsidance, not helped by a lot of mines being forced to close suddenly during the thatcher era so no shoring up was done to mitigate the mines collapsing over time, resulting in a lot of land becoming unusable due to being unstable...
Great coverage. Florida is going to be one big sinkhole
Going to? Think it already is

A sinkhole caused by underground mining is called a crownhole.
2000 years from now, when archaeologists will stumble across this concrete-gypsum block in a sink hole, they will most certainly tell their audiences: "It was 10,000 slaves with a rope and bronze chisels!"
Exactly 😂 .. and maybe someone's random book will become the new gospel. You never know what we have missed and lost from previous times and so forth. I doubt anyone has had true 100% history. We make assumptions here and there and change history too for control/politics. Maybe with this new tech we are acquiring at record speed true history can be stored and not be tainted for later civilizations way after us
@@karmasutra4774I agree.
Also an ongoing example of assumptions and changing for politics include the Bible that is outdated and needs updated to this current existence and not in some delusional land of brainwashed people who lack critical thinking that one calls "religion."

I work for an insurance company and we don’t sell home insurance in Florida because of sinkholes. We sell car insurance but not home.
Thanks.
I live in Northern CA, in a small town called Grass Valley, site of the most productive and richest gold mine in the US. I have visited our local mining museum, (which was closed up during WW2) and found the 3D map of our town. Terrifyingly, Grass Valley is built on top of miles and miles of tunnels, dug to extract gold. Those are constantly prone to seepage from the water table, so are submerged. But there's very little room between the tops of horizontal tunnels and the sidewalks and buildings right above. One good earthquake or several years of heavy rains (not likely in CA) and our entire town could disappear into one or several sink holes. We've already had a few deaths and loss of property due to these collapses in specific areas, but it could envelop much of our town. Doesn't keep me up at night, but is something to keep in mind.
Glad we could get to the bottom of this
The images of the Chibatao port remind me of the quick clay slide at Rissa Norway. There is a good documentary about that as well.
A tiny sinkhole opened at my college where all the freshman dorms are, I was living there at the time. They just put a few wood stakes and bright colored tape around it and called it a day. Never did see if they fixed it
There are several large "craters" in and near Israel that are essentially sinkholes. The largest, Maktesh Ramon, is 40 km long and about 10 km across. They were formed hundreds of millions of years ago though so no one was alive to see it, but I get it was pretty dramatic when they collapsed.

We had one a few metres across, in my city, and it got a lot of press. A co-worker from the southern US heard about it, but wasn't impressed. He's used to hearing about sinkholes that swallow entire houses.
