When I was six years old I broke my leg
I was running from my brother and his friends
tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass I rolled down
I was younger then, take me back to when I
Found my heart and broke it here, made friends and lost them through the years
And I’ve not seen the roaring fields in so long, I know, I’ve grown
but I can’t wait to go home
I’m on my way, driving at 90 down those country lanes
Singing to Tiny Dancer, And I miss the way you make me feel, and it’s real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Fifteen years old and smoking hand rolled cigarettes
Running from the law through the backfields and getting drunk with my friends
Had my first kiss on a Friday night, I don’t reckon I did it right
I was younger then, take me back to when we found
Weekend jobs when we got paid and buy cheap spirits and drink them straight
Me and my friends have not thrown up in so long, oh how we’ve grown
I can’t wait to go home
I’m on my way, driving at 90 down those country lanes
Singing to Tiny Dancer, And I miss the way you make me feel, it’s real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
One friend left to sell clothes
One works down by the coast
One had two kids but lives alone
One’s brother overdosed
Ones already on his second wife
Ones just barely getting by
But these people raised me
And I can’t wait to go home
And I’m on my way, and I still remember those country lanes
When we did not know the answers, And I miss the way you make me feel, it’s real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill

I love the town I live in but I hate the fact that everybody knows everyone. I feel like if you fucked up once, it will be known and remembered by the whole town forever
FYI the town in the video is called Framlingham in the county of Suffolk in England. The 'Castle on the Hill' refers to the Castle in the town.
You literally described my area XD
Ed's music is excellent , but everyone should really appreciate the music video team! It perfectly complements the song and that's hard to find these days! Excellent work

Nostalgia is truly one of the great human weaknesses, second only to the neck.
I think what's beautiful about the song is that he doesn't glorify the town and his past. He simply recognizes it and is willing to embrace the broken people around him -- since we are all broken. He's is trying, also, to remember the good parts of that time in his life. It's a timeless song IMO -- rare these days.

This song came out when I was 10. Now I still listen to this song
I'm 40 years old and this song makes me think of my youth and brings a tear, thanks Ed!
I'd be honored if some Ed Sheeran fans who appreciate 80s/90s classics would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael and PURPLE RAIN by Prince on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the greatest vocalist-songwriters in music history. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends of both yesterday & today.

@@moorejeffery1490 Hey Moore, I don't know if these words will effect you in any way, but I just want you to know that you have still got your whole life ahead of you. Despite myself being closer to your age (24) I've learned a great deal about myself as a person, while still getting a hold of this whole "adulting" thing. No matter what family members, peers, or strangers may say, you take the time you need to figure out what you want out of life. There will be times where you may feel lost and not quite sure if you're taking the right path to success, but you will get there eventually. Best of luck to your future and know that others will always be rooting for you on the sidelines.

Ugh, this songs makes me cry every single time. Especialy the last part:
"One friend left to sell clothes
One works down by the coast
One had two kids but lives alone
One’s brother overdosed
Ones already on his second wife
Ones just barely getting by
But these people raised me
And I can’t wait to go home"
Because I know I am probably never going home, and I will probably never see them again. It really hurts.
I feel that
When I was young this was an awesome song. Now I realize it's actually sad
I was never in a close-knit group of friends, just seemed to be the 'other' or an outsider. I do envy close childhood friendships regardless of how adult circumstances may change over time. As a middle aged bloke I've come to the realisation that I must be not likeable. That's life!
yes it does
This shit is deep
I'm a teenager. This song makes me kinda sad cause I know someday I'll be grown up and my life will be completely changed
So make the most of it! :D
That's the beauty of it. If something lasted for ever it wouldn't be meaningful. You can only appreciate good once you've seen bad.
same
Same
Sae :) "life is a journey, not a destination" - this song takes me back to when I was a teenager & doing all this stuff (I hate to say nearly 20 years ago 😨) - you never really start to feel 'old' - the stuff you do just changes. Some people change, some people are always there, new people come along.... always remember in everything you do, you are making memories. Nothing beats that - grab every opportunity & hunt them down. I love that what you say suggests you're a happy teenager & enjoying life - I so know many, I'm not stereotyping the whole 'moody teenage crap', but so often comments are more about wishing life away - just keep enjoying what you're doing, you'll be fine.
I don't usually write comments like that, but I got really ill at 22. Just as I graduated from my Master's degree. Life changed in ways I would never have imagined, it certainly didn't go as planned, and over 10 years later I'm still battling to get my health back. Would I have chosen it? Of course not, but (cliché) it really has taught me what is important is family, friends, happiness - & health(!) - if you have those things, you are lucky. I look back on my teenage years & they were fantastic. I'm so glad I did so much when I could: travelled, partied, competed nationally in my sport, worked abroad, volunteered, geeked out at school to get good degrees - depends on what you want to do, just focus on being good at what you love & remember there is a place for everyone, the world beyond school is vast & exciting - explore it. I'm so happy I did all that and more with great friends & made great friends in the process. Some will last a lifetime, treasure them - they aren't always who you expect to be around forever. Ultimately, be happy, be kind & make the most of it all. ✌
(*The 'oldest' sounding comment I think I've ever written, but these lyrics make me nostalgic. ... so all true!)
"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."
This song is a perfect manifestation of that quote, a life lesson in of itself, and it's why people will still be listening to Castle On The Hill long after we're all gone. Sheeran really did make a timeless masterpiece.
When this came out I was homeless, on drugs, and then jail. I now have a house, job, and husband. This song and “Clover Cage - In the Moment” are the two songs that helped get rid of my depression. I just want to send love to everyone and I want everyone to know things will get better. We are in this together..I love you 💕
For me, this is the best song of Ed, it hits so freaking hard. When we're young, we meet people, then they become our friends, and then we think that it's going to last forever. But with the time, most of them go away, and it's not our or their fault, it just happens. Although, in the end, the memories never go away; it can be a simple habit, or a moment. liking it or not, they stay with us.
It's more sad to think that an actual friend took the wrong way/path in real life...
Extremely well said! So true and this is exactly how I feel. I’m in my fifties now and just thinking back. I’m tearing up.

I feel like this is not actually a song to youth but to young adults. Those just old enough to have left home a few years ago and grow up a bit. Like after a year or two at university.
A song to look back on 'the good old days' and realize that while all of them have developed in different directions your friends are still your friends and are likely to stay that forever.
