  • Footage of the 1970 Brands Hatch 1000km race in which Pedro Rodriguez showed his driving skills, mastering the allmighty Porsche 917 under appaling weather conditions. After being blackflagged very early in the race for overtaking under yellow ( Pedro never saw the yellow flag because of the spray ) and being lectured by the Clerk of the Course Nick Syrett, he stormed out of the pits one lap down. By lap 20, he was back in the lead and finished the race 5 laps ahead of the second placed 917 driven by Elford and Hulme. Both Rodriguez and Elford drove 5h 40min of the 6H 45 min race leaving the rest for their co-drivers Kinnunen and Hulme. Those were the days.

    Two years earlier I watched Pedro Rodriguez hustle a BRM around a rain-soaked Longford circuit in Tasmania for the last round of the Tasman Series for that year. He finished second to an inspired Piers Courage in McLaren MP4 (formula 2 car) by 55 seconds. The rain was such that it favoured the smaller capacity car of Courage - Clark and Hill in Lotus 49s finished 5th and 6th - such was the rain that day. I still remember Pedro's deerstalker hat that he habitually wore in the pits.

    What this video does not make clear is that Pedro won by 5 (yes FIVE) laps! And that despite losing 1 lap for the yellow flag incident. I spent the race on Paddock Hill bend, soaked to the skin enthralled by Pedro's mastery of the conditions - in a completely different league that day.

    El ojos de gato 😺

    • @pedro917
      @pedro917  Před 8 měsíci

      'Ojos de gato' was the nickname of Ricardo Rodriguez. After the 1960 Le Mans 24H podium ceremony, winner Gendebien (with Paul Frère) said to Ricardo (finished 2nd with André Pilette) that he was a real champion, that his pure driving style during the night under the appalling conditions was extraordinary and that his eyes were as good as an extra pair of ‘Marchals’ (high beam headlights used on most cars in period). There lies the origin of Ricardo’s nickname ‘cat eyes’ (ojos de gato) as the logo of (SEV) Marchal is a cat with eyes wide open. The Rodriguez family took it with pride, especially coming from Gendebien and the French press took note and wrote about the 'cat eyes'.
