Installing automatic rising bollards on a private driveway.

  • Our video demonstrates what's involved during the supply and installation of 2 automatic rising bollards on a private driveway. A single bollard was required at each entrance to protect a large SUV, and we installed a safety induction loop at each entrance to prevent any accidental rising of the bollards. Control of the bollards is managed by using a standard 2-button handheld remote control to both raise and lower the bollards when required.

    What everyone has failed to realize about this and almost all other non-keyed entry/exit devices is the presence of the ground loop. This loop detects metal. A wire running to the controller is monitored for changes. You can see this loop being installed a few feet inside the driveway. Funny part is the only thing one needs to defeat such an exit loop is a metal no-parking sign, throw it low to slide it across the known loop without setting one foot on the property. Bollard, retract. Same thing works on most non-keyed security gates. If your gate or bollard relies only on the presence of a vehicle to open it... a decent pieces of sheet steel or aluminum will defeat it in 2 seconds. Always add a keypad to exit, AND add the ground loop so that a vehicle must be present with a proper keypad entry to activate the gate or bollard. Now, without knowing the details on this install, it MIGHT be possible to shutdown that loop detection.
    All that said, it’s a badass bollard install. Please tell me that loop is a proximity safety... but it’s way too far really for that purpose. Potentially a wireless receiver/transmitter... which is essentially taking the place of a keypad.

    • @TheHoipoloi
      @TheHoipoloi Před 3 lety +6

      The loop is simply to prevent the bollard from raising when a vehicle is over it, nothing to do with granting permission for lowering bollard.

    • @703simpson
      @703simpson Před 3 lety

      @@TheHoipoloi so this thing is controlled by maybe a remote rf key fob, with a hardwired switch inside the house? I like it. Nice install. In the US, the egress loops are often installed in this fashion. I have seen all flavors, though. Keypad with egress loop, which is problematic for foot traffic with a gate setup. Mainly commercial installs in that scenario. Folks can and do get trapped inside if they do not have a vehicle. Building codes may also require a non-keypad egress loop. They are inherently insecure.
      I want one of these bollards. :)

    • @driveguard1
      @driveguard1  Před 3 lety +11

      Tim, you make some valid points, although in this case, the loop has been installed for safety, ie, to stop the bollard from rising accidentally if someone was to press the remote control by accident when someone is driving in or out of the driveway. It has NOT been installed as a free exit loop which you describe, so no, the bollard will not drop if you place a metal sheet over the loop. There was also no reason to install a keypad because the customer didn't need one or want one, they wanted to just use a simple handheld remote control to bring them up and down when they want. Just thought I would clear this up:)

    Good luck repairing; when the bum with a steel bumper is upset when he can not use the driveway to turn his truck around!

    I'd rather have SPIKES for illegal entry into the driveway; more costly to the dumb drivers.

      Let us know BB if you can find automatic rising spikes for a driveway. What would the point anyway if a car thief can't see anything to put them off, and why would you want them to break in, take your car and then puncture all of the tyres? This all about prevention, not retribution.

    • @driveguard1
      @driveguard1  Před 3 lety

      You would only install gates to block out the view of the house. Bollards will leave the front open but not block out the view. Why bring peoples attention to your property by installing a massive pair of gates at twice the cost? Gates can be pushed open with enough force, but you won't push the bollard over :)
