      Good luck if you ever try it.

    I know I’m late to watching this video but I am a groomer and you said you would like tips so here’s what i have for you. First off, you did a great job for not having any professional training! One thing that did make me cringe was the paw pads. You can get a 40 blade, or use the 10 blade that came with the clippers. Just take that over the paw pads and you can dip in between the pads as well to make it as nice and clean as possible. Also, you mentioned always having trouble with the ears. One thing you can try to get the ears even much more easily is to trim them without holding the ear in your hand. When you’re holding the ear, it is not laying in its natural state. Therefore, it will not be straight when you let it go. Another thing that I noticed which isn’t really a big deal because clearly it works for you, but when you hold shears, you are supposed to have your thumb and ring finger in the holes. Like I said, doesn’t really matter if it works for you. I think that is more for people that groom every day to help us not get carpal tunnel as easily. And my last piece of advice is that if you are interested in expanding your grooming equipment to make trimming the face easier, I would suggest getting clipper combs. They are little attachments that hook onto your blade (the 30 or 15 blade is recommended but the 10 blade will work too, the length will just be a little longer than the length that the comb says). When standing in front of your dog, you will take the clipper comb over the top of your dog’s head towards the nose and then run it down the sides of the face as well. This will make it so that the head is all one symmetrical length. And then you will just trim up the muzzle and use the thinning shears to blend any lines that you may see to make it all smooth. Oh and extra tip, you actually can take the blades in the reverse direction of the hair growth. I do it all the time, you just have to go 2 blade lengths up. This helps get the coat super smooth looking all over. Definitely recommend going in reverse on Malteses! 5/8 would be 2 lengths up from a 4 blade in case you want to try that out! Sorry for such a long comment but hopefully this will help you or someone reading this out! And again, great job. Definitely the best home groom I have ever seen

      Quick question, I have a Maltese and he absolutely hates when i try to cut the hair on his legs, around his legs and his belly or near his private...lol.....so i dont force it. He also tries to bite, he is rather feisty but so sweet and loving otherwise. Is it ok to place a muzzle on him while I trim him? Idk what they do at the groomers, I've always wondered.........hmmmmm

      Great idea, for extra cash! I take my two dogs every other month, at a cost of $55.each plus tip. ($125.00). Groomer has them done in less than 45 minutes. She does the business out of her home. Very busy place. She has been in business for five years. I bet she makes $4-500. CASH a day! Not a bad business. Biggest cost for you would be a location, unless you can do it out of your Home. You would need to dedicate a room, or two for the operation, plus an area outside, (when the weather is nice).

    Hi! I am a professional groomer and just wanted to leave a few helpful tips! First, I noticed when you do the top of Bear's head, you do it all with scissors, a quicker way you could do that would be to use a snap on guard comb and run that over the top of his head, it will speed up the process so much! 😊 with a guard comb it is safe to use it on top of the head and you can also clip with the hair growth and against to get a nice finish (forward and back). You will snap the guard combs over a 10 blade. You can find these combs at Petco! Just ask a groomer or associate if you have trouble finding them. Also, since you bought the Andis clippers it should have came w a 10 blade. The 10 you can actually use inside of his paw pads to get the pads cleaner and get a lot more out (just be very careful). The best blade to use for the pads however is a 30 or 40 blade. When you trim around the paws, an easy way to do it is to place the dogs foot on the table or surface and trim around instead of picking up his paw and trimming that way. You get a nicer rounder foot! I'm not sure if you do his sanitary areas (privates), but you can also do those areas w a 10 blade. On his lower belly area where the hair is less around and on the privates you can lightly go over those areas 😊 same w his behind. You can go over that hair w a 10 safely just be very careful and try not to touch it w the blade too much. When it comes to trimming the tail a fast, easy, and nice looking way to do that is to twist the end hair around your finger or twirl around your finger and snip the end that is twisted. It will come out very even. Of course just note where the tail is. I would explain the ear trimming but it is too hard to explain lol and would be easier just to show. Over all, not bad! 😉

  • @thewonderforest
    @thewonderforest  Před 6 lety +258

    Hey loves! i created this video in 2015 and obviously I've learned a lot more over the years and have improved a lot! I wanted to address some comments:
    - If you have a bouncy dog who won't let you do this, please don't attempt it. I am lucky that Bear is so calm and it's only because he is used to it... he's been getting groomed since he was a baby and he's 12 years old now. He has trust in me and is pretty much my shadow :)
    - I've been using the Live Clean Eco Pooch shampoo for a couple of years and love it! Please stop commenting about Hartz shampoo. I used it in the video because it was on hand. I DON’T use this normally. The Martha Stewart puppy one is also good.
    - I am able to scissor his paws because I am super careful and he allows me to do it. Groomers suggest using the clippers for safety reasons, so do that instead.
    - I keep his eyes clean from tear stains by staying on top of them. I HATE when dogs have goopy eyes so I am constantly picking out the dried bits whenever I see them and I trim out any stained areas frequently. Bear has never had a huge issues with tear stains though. There are products you can get to clean the stains but the best I've found is to just use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip CAREFULLY and not close to the eyes. This is best if it's run down his face. I rarely ever do this as trimming keeps it under control.
    - Negative comments are not appreciated. Helpful ones are! We are always learning, so instead of jumping on people why not offer solutions or tips instead?
    - Regarding clipping in the kitchen...You want your dog to be at eye level with you, so you need a higher surface. We don't eat here, so don't worry. And remember, he is freshly cleaned. The area is also thoroughly cleaned afterwards just like any other surface (I figured that was a give-in?).
    - Bear is 99.9% Maltese. He is just large for his breed (he was supposed to be half the size). I had him DNA tested. (the 0.1% is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel more than 3 generations in the past)
    - Finally, I accept zero responsibility if you try this and your dog doesn't cooperate, or he ends up looking like a hacked mess haha. You should know your own capabilities and your dog's personality better than anyone so do this at your own risk. And if you have any questions or want to get better at this, ask or watch a groomer and build up your own knowledge!! DO NOT attempt this if you haven't learned all you can beforehand.

    Hi, I'm a groomer! just few tips!! you can do a precut before the bath by shaving him down first doing under the pads and doing his sanitary(with a 10) I usually don't do the face during a pre cut tho i normally do it after. it's a lot less hair to dry and after you dry it, it will show any pieces you missed and you can shave right over his body again just to make sure it's super smooth

Fingers crossed my dogs will still love me after this DIY session or they will never talk to me again and go on Instagram live telling others dogs how their owner messed up their hair and they were embarrassed to be seen in public 😂

    I agree with another comment on here from a professional groomer: I am really impressed! In the professional grooming world we run into a lot of owners who perform home grooms that turn out horrendously and are done unsafely. You really have done your research on the tools and techniques.
    I only have a few tips:
    1) For a more even cut on the head, look into getting guard combs. You can attach them over the #10 blade you have. Start from the back of the head an run them forward over the top of the head towards the nose. It will create a uniform length and save time on trimming individual chunks. Lift the ear and skim the guard comb down the side of the face to create a rounder look and make both sides even.
    2) Use the thinning shears to clean out his eye corners a little bit. You seem comfortable using regualr cshears, so the thinning shears would be easy to use and a lot safer :)
    3) If you wanna play around with hand-scissoring, clean up the edges on his legs and under belly with straight-shears to create columns and a cleaner line.
    4) This is nit-picky but.... Try holding your shears with your ring-finger and thumb instead of your middle finger and thumb.It creates a better sense of control.
    5) OH!! You can use that 10 blade to clean out his paw-pads. Start from his toes and skim over his pads towards his heel, them scoop in that 'v' looking space between his "toe" pads and the big pad, never between the actual toes, though.
    All-in-all he looks great and you have an incredible grasp on the basic knowledge of grooming. C:

    Hi there, I randomly came across this searching for grooming tutorials. I'm a dog groomer. You've done pretty well. My only suggestion would be to use a clip comb set for a longer length. Since you like leaving him fluffy, there are combs you can attach to you #10 blade or a #30 blade. The clip combs do not heat up like the blade does, but the #10 blade underneath will heat up so be careful when you remove it. I would get a set. The Wahl clip comb set will fit on your andis blades, or any detachable A5. Getting a set will allow you to choose shorter clips in summer, or as long as an 1 inch. There's 8 of them and they go down 1/8 of an inch in length for each one, but beware of the 2 shortest lengths as they're very easy to nick you dog with them. I'm not knocking your home groom, you did fairly well. Grooming can be expensive. Just always use a coolant on your blade, and only use a #10 for his sanitary area. FYI shorter the blade, the quicker it will heat.

  • @catmouth9657
    @catmouth9657 Před 7 lety +7

    he looks adorable! as a groomer I definitely recommend using your #10 blade to trim his pads ( and sanitary area if needed ). It is much safer than using scissors :) always remember to keep your blades and scissors sharp! your comb is your best friend, clean, dry and straight hair cuts the best! keep up the good work :)

    So cute, and you did great for a home groom! As a pro groomer, I would agree with other groomers' comments below to always use a clipper for the paw pads, not a scissor, just for added safety and for better results! Your #10 would work fine, although most groomers use a #30. And I would also recommend using your thinners on the sides of the face to blend more. But overall, bravo! 👏👏👏

    As a dog groomer I would recommend using the 10 blade you got with your clippers to shave his paw pad hair. Its the safest blade to use, and will eliminate the need to scissor the bottoms of his feet. Otherwise nice work, and you have a ton of knowledge as fair as safety and the actual hair cut goes(: Good job!

    In my opinion this is the BEST you can do for your dog. Fortunately, I found a groomer that is AMAZING. I go to her house and she grooms my dog in front of me. However, I've always wanted to be able to groom my dog to save a buck lol and also because he is supper comfortable with me. I am terrified of taking him to another groomer or some place you drop him off and pick him later in the day. Not all groomers love their jobs and they will treat your dog like a rattle doll, without caring for their well being. Others are not patient and will restrain your dog in order to groom him/her fast. My dog suffers from anxiety and I know that will be a nightmare for him and I wouldn't feel comfortable. Thanks for this video.

    Great job! I would like to let people know there are safety scissors for the tips around it to work around the eyes instead of the ones that are sharp. The ones I bought at Petsmart have last a long time and stayed sharp. BTW my vet said because of our babies are a little heavy it’s hard on their joints to standing long. My Maltipoo was traumatized by the groomers. While they seemed fine . But came home with bloody diarrhea. The groomer when asked if they gave him any treats said that it was stress and so I had him check with the vet and it came down to that. Plus he has a knee and joint probiotics. So now I groom him. Sometimes he will be only half was groomed. We go at his and my pace. If one of us isn’t up to totally finishing we finish later. Let stress on us bot. Stress lowers everyone’s immune system. (shorter lifespan, if stressed) I hope this helps someone.

    So another groomer tip from a groomer (lol) when you cut with the scissors and the thinning shears your ring finger goes into the other hole so that your index and middle finger supprts the body of the scissors and when you cut do not move those fingers. When you cut the only thing you should be moving is your thumb up and down. when you open and close your hand it makes it choppy if you just move you thumb you will get straight even cuts.also yes you can you the combs but if you could also come all the hair on the top of his head to the middle hold it with your fingers and then with your thinning shears go ahead and take as much as you want while still holding it this way when you let go it will lay naturally on his head. you can also hold the beard when youre cutting his face and just comb the hair down and cut wit out holding the hair and cutting. You will get a better idea of the outcome. ears suck to cut yes but if you left the ear bush all the hair on one side down you can go ahead and trim as much as you want then turn the ear so you have the hair on the other side and trim. I hope this helps and makes sense! lol

    • @thewonderforest
      @thewonderforest  Před 9 lety

      nessuhhh Thank you, yes it makes sense! I can always use tips like these :). I do find though that the shears make my fingers hurt after a while, so I tend to swap fingers as I go along. I suppose that's not the best thing to do!

    • @damnxneciia
      @damnxneciia Před 9 lety

      that is most likely because of the handle on those shears those are better for humans really. if you would like more comfortable ones that won't cost you much at all you can go on eBay look up grooming shears and they are called king star. they are $15 for a pair of them they are pretty sharp and good for what they are. better however for someone that is just grooming they're dog at home rather then a groomer doing one dog after another.im glad I was able to help!

    Just my opinion - I have been a groomer for many years - Please read up on using HARTZ's products - not so safe - so why take a chance??? there are so many other great products that are affordable such as WAHL products and so forth. Using a 10 blade will help keep the sany areas, under the ears and paw cleaning and safe to use. I also use a small hand clipper (mens clipper) for around the pads - this way there are no injuries. I have seen many at home videos and they are very scary - I did like yours and a tip should be you remain calm the dog will most likely as well.

    When scissoring hold your shears in your thumb and ring finger. It's how they are meant to be held and it will give you much better control!
    Also NEVER scissor over paw pads!!! It's very dangerous if he moves even the slightest and your about to close your shears you can do some serious damage. Use your 10 blade it's the safest blade. I personally use a 30 or 40 on paw pads just because I know what I'm doing and it's much easier then a 10 but if a 10 is what you have use it. Please don't use shears!!
