In this video, I show you how to create a simple and safe setup for fishing in silt. The depth of silt I am going to fish into is about 10cm. So I want my leader material to position the swivel 8 to 10cms above the bottom of the lead. If you donât have access to a boat, itâs not always easy to know just how deep the silt is in the area youâre fishing in. My rule of thumb is that if I cast a lead and feel the drop, if I can feel the lead touch the lake bottom, then Iâm pretty confident that the silt is no more than 10cm deep. If I struggle to feel the donk, I think the silt is going to be much deeper. If thatâs the case, you need to position the swivel further up the leader with a piece of shrink tube. At the other end, I show you how to tie a very simple pop up rig with mono and a split shot.

Just made a load of zigs up for the first time ready for 16th of June and had a idea to make zig bins out of all my empty Drennan suplex 100m line spools. They work perfectly because they come with plastic collets to prevent the line from falling off.
Love the tip about the split shot! Great simple little rig, I've already tied up quite a few mono hair and mono D rigs. Time to tie some of these. Thanks

I know because when I got back into fishing 20 years ago after a 10 year break I simply couldn't believe how complicated things had become! I taught myself how to catch from the local park lake 35+ years ago with two grains of sweetcorn and an open end feeder. What the hell happened while I was away! Iâve been a sheep, Iâve followed the herd but the harder I tried, the worse my results became. It wasn't until I learned to think for myself again and met some very good anglers that things started to click for me. Hi Brian, thanks for commenting again. Iâm glad that you liked that little trick. I spent a couple of years fishing this rig by wrapping a couple of turns under the hair. It does work but the mono relaxes and moves and itâs difficult to hold the exit point of the hair in place. The hook bead solves this problem and I much prefer it. If you do try it without a hair bead, Iâd suggest you add a dab of super glue at the hair exit point. Itâs tricky because you need to hold the rig with the bait hanging down as it dries otherwise the super glue will mess up the hair angle but it is possible. Gently blowing on the super glue increases the rate at which it sets (use very sparingly and use the fast set stuff not the slow). Cheers, Matt.

I use heli set ups on loads of different lakes definitely my preferred method hard/ soft and gravel /weed catches every time that set up.Anglers seem to think its for silt or weed or distance only .
Your purposeful, careful assembly of your rig reminds me of rigging for halibut in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. You donât want to make a mistake prior to dropping a 2 pound cannonball, hooks, and bait as much as 600 feet just to get the bait in front of the fish! PB, BTW, was 134 pounds in just 100 feet of water. Well done, sir!

I took your advice from the beginning keeping it really simple, I just got a little bit to hyped about the chod rig video's I saw previously so you are absolutly right! I will take your advice again and keep it really simple. I was really worried about thick weedy venues in my home town in the netherlands, but after a couple of laps with my dog around those venues I found out that there isnt that much weed in them so I won't really need something like a long running chod/zig rig!Anyway sorry for the long story but man you are an awesome help and I just wanted to ellaborate that you really helped me a lot with all of your video's! I always use the blood knot, didn't even know there was a tucked blood knot? So I'm gonna try using it, not that it will up my catch rate anyway but I'll give it a go, cheers Matthew đŹđ§âđź
Hi Gaz, it all depends on what material you are using really. Some lines works better with certain types of knot than others. The only way to know is to do some dead lift tests. Sorry to hear than youâre not catching much. Itâs a tough time of year. Iâve had loads of super positive feedback from guys that have been using my rigs so pick one that you fancy and give it a whirl. This helicopter rig is just a popup version of my very popular basic mono hair rig. Just remember that hook sharpness is everything in this game. Hi Matt, been spending the day watching your videos. With the pop up, does it have the same effect when the shot is nearer the hook when you want it nearer to the lake bed?
Yes mate, in fact that effect is amplified the closer the split shot is to the hook.
I'm really struggling with a few things in my angling. Casting accuracy and line feathering and understanding the bottom. Learning the bottom is coming along though and because of you and other anglers I managed to finally snag one from a pond I've been on. The whole bottom is silty. It's about 2 acre treelined square with a tree lined island roughly in the middle. If I put my rod on the deck at the bank it's down to the fourth eye with no pressure at all. Holds about 50 carp. On fir 48 tommorow. Feeling ready but anxious as I'm really struggling with where to put my depth at on the leader. I did have my first on a lead clip with a 12 inch rig so getting somewhere and will have 1 out on each.

Hi mate, thanks very much for taking the time to comment and for the support đ So I designed this little rig to fish over the shallow silt area. When I was underarming the rigs into place, I fished them as slack as I could. If I overcast and floated it back on the spot, then I fished semi slack as the rig was 40 - 60 yards away. Never bothered with a back lead as I was only fishing one rod. Hope that my tips help you this summer! All the best, Matt.

Hi Ray, wow, well thatâs great feedback, thank you. We are trying to up our game across the board every time so itâs great to know that you are seeing our progress. Over clay I would just go with a straight forward bottom bait. Carp love clay and clean and polish it. The last thing you want is a blatant popup sitting up on a rock hard spot. The helicopter lead system is not optimal for a clean clay bottom IMO In a silty bottom, we can use the silt to add extra weight to the lead to help the mechanics of the helicopter rig but without the silt Iâve found the helicopter less effective than a running rig (itâs not a huge difference but I definitely got done twice when fishing this heli setup over a clean bottom and I hardly ever get done on my running rigs). Iâd go mono hair or mono D with a swivel based running lead system (trick or simple). September can be tricky. Everyone thinks that the fish are going to be on the munch in the run up to winter, when in actual fact they are slowing down as temperatures drop. Oxygen levels can also be an issue at this time of year so Iâd keep it very simple with little PVA traps. Find a fish and get one on him! Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mate, thanks for commenting. Yes a super simple little rig and a good way to go at this time of year as itâs possible to fine down a little (conditions depending of course). Recently Iâve been testing the 10lb Bullet as I was so impressed with the 20lbs version, so that's another option. Iâve been using the 10lb for mainline and hooklink. Just be sure to test your knots and check for damage as at 0.28 itâs not as robust as 0.40. Best of luck, Matt.
@@matthewcollinsangler Ive just bought the ridgemonkey 15lb flouracarbone so was going to go with that apparently it's a thin mono with a flouracarbone outer layer looks the part won't know till I hook into something I've also got the esp synchro xt 18lb I've heard good reports on that. @@leefrancis8952 I met some customers a few ago that rocked up here with some Ridgemonkey line. It was rated at 20lbs but I could break it with my bare hands. Sure it could have been a duff batch but I wouldn't buy the Ridgemonkey line again. Just make sure you test it properly before you spool it.

Some lakes are just rock hard in the winter. Iâve thought about trying worms myself but Iâve never bothered. Iâve not got any links for you but this is how I go about it: For me itâs all about timing and the weather windows that might only last a few days. Tactics and bait wise I used Citruz pop ups or bottom baits and a bag of matching 2mm pellets. I just knock up some small mesh bags and hook them on to a 10lb mono hooklink. If Iâm fishing blind then I just lob them out and hope for the best. If I see a fish show then Iâm on it. Iâm not expecting it to roar off within the hour. Sometimes I might have to wait 24hrs for the spot to actually produce. Late afternoon is a good time for a bite. The nights tend to be a waste of time at the minute but that can change soon enough. If the venue has no winter form whatsoever then you might be wasting your time. No shame in heading to a runs water to get your string pulled at this time of year.

@@leefrancis8952 OMG, thatâs awful⌠I was being generous and assumed it was a one off! The Syncro is decent enough but I wasn't keen on the handleability. Lots of comments saying the standard Syncro is good stuff. After the Syncro XT, I moved over to the Nash Bullet in 20lbs and I really like it. Amazing knot strength when joined to a leadless leader. A little trickier to get as good results direct to swivel but it still passed my 17.5lb deadlift test with a little care and attention. The abrasion resistance is also excellent. It casts beautifully. I could hit 100 yards with the 20lbs 0.40 version no problem and Iâve never done that with any other line of that diameter. I was so impressed Iâm fishing with the 10lb version for mainline and hooklink this winter. The fishing has been tough but I banked a 35lbs mirror without any drama a few days ago.
Iâm fishing the 10lb straight through to the 1m of cling-on leader. You have to be extra careful when tying your knots obviously as Iâd had a few fail when tightening but with care I can lift a 5kg dumbbell with this stuff. You have to be really careful not to damage the line in any way as itâs pretty delicate (0.28). Iâve been using 3oz leads and on my 9ft dwarfs itâs like casting without any line attached. The rigs just sail out there. I noticed Iâve lost some feel with the lighter line though and feeling the donk is harder. The only downside with the Bullet is that the last 2m goes bongly fairly quickly. For me itâs no biggie. I just cut off a couple of meters and re-tie to the leader. You might hate that and if you do then avoid but if you want your line to cast like a dream, sink well, be tough as nails and knot well then Bullet is a good choice. The other option is the good old fashioned Berkley Big Game but itâs quite spongy so itâs not for everyone either. Hope that helps and do let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, yes a few guys are asking about weed. It all depends how bad it is really. If itâs so bad that dropping the lead is the only option then this lead setup isn't the one. Personally Iâd just have a cast about and if I can feel the lead touch bottom then Iâm happy itâs fishing. Cheers, Matt.

On the bottom part of the leader you slide the beats onto the spliced part, if I have to put them higher up onto the leader I simply pul with my slicing needle a peace of leader material into the leader at the hight I wanna put my beats. It looks neat and works like a charm. đ¤đŁđŁ

Hi Matt, just subscribed and yout channel is awesome. I'm fishing a fairly silty venue with some stringy type weed about. Just wondering if you think a heli and stiff rig is the way forward. I'm also quite often not finding clearer spots and just casting to showing fish or near them so need something that will always present. I fished a wafter today on semi stiff and didn't feel confident in it at all. Thinking a stiff multi rig would be more suitable for the above, what do you think?
Hi mate, glad youâre enjoying the channel! Based on the situation you describe, this popup rig with standard mono (not fluoro) is a perfectly suitable choice. Could be a hair rig, could be a d rig. As long as itâs mounted in a heli fashion, you should be fine. If you want to use a multi rig, use Skinlink semi stiff rather than stiff. Itâs not going to catch you more fish than a standard mono rig, but you can change hooks quickly. Cheers, Matt

Hi mate, thanks for commenting. The idea behind this rig is to use your mainline as hooklink as itâs simple, strong, cheap and readily available. In order for the rig to have some anti tangle properties you need to use a line of at least 0.35 or ideally 0.40 diameter. Nowadays my go-to choice for all my mono is 0.40 (20lbs) Nash Bullet. I use it as a mainline and hooklink. Itâs strong, tough and reliable and it ticks all the boxes for me. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Paul, Iâm glad that you liked the video. This video is basically a popup version of my mono hair rig. The mono hair rig is designed (primarily) for bottom baits so thatâs the one you want. Hi mate, thanks for commenting. Popups work well over silt because they sit above where they can easily be seen and smelt by the carp. You can catch carp using bottom baits in silt but you need to add extra attraction around the hookbait to help the carp find it and force them to dig for it if necessary. I normally use a heavily glugged PVA bag of flake and pellets to achieve this. Donât forget that carp fishing in the winter is hard so most anglers are struggling for bites at this time of year. Hi Matthew, a great rig set up for fishing in silt, very simplistic & ensures accurate bait presentation.
A question I have is Iâll be fishing this exact system in a French lake (Petit Pretre) in April 23. You may be familiar with the lake which is 100% silt and is very deep across the entire bed. If fishing this system using predominantly a bait boat for accurate mid to long distances, would you position the hook beads higher up at 20cm as suggested with light lead? The water depth is no more than 2 to 3 foot.

Donât know the lake mate. Because youâre dropping from a bait boat, you donât have to worry about what lead system you choose, because the rig wonât have far to fall through 2-3 ft of water. Even if the silt is bad, it wonât sink very deep as long as you use light-ish leads. Iâd use 2.5oz swivel leads and then you can fish this setup or just a basic running rig. Use plenty of particles or flake in your boat trap to get them grubbing about and you should do okay.

To be honest, if youâre dropping it from a bait boat, you can fish any rig over silt as the lead is only going to plug an inch or two in the soft silt.

Using a PVA stick over silt is a great idea. The PVA will decelerate the lead after impact with the water and slow its descent, especially if you feel it down on a tight line. Even if the lead plugs a bit, the PVA stick will stop your rig getting drawn into the silt. I use it all the time over soft silt. For baiting up at long range, I use a throwing stick.

Hi Paul, thanks for commenting. You're not the first to ask for this and we will do a video on it at some stage. I've discovered a new product that solves this problem brilliantly. It's the Nash helicopter sleeve. The bead has a big hole that the tubing passes safely through. I've only fished it with the bead pushed onto the sleeve lightly. If you needed to raise the top bead I'd use some PVA tape. It works with tubing or a leadless leader. If rules allow I use some cling-on leader but there's nothing wrong with the tubing option. Hi there, 20 - 30mm is about right. As the mono has a stiffness to it it will naturally sit lower than any popup rig tied with a coated material. I know anglers like the Ronnie rig is because it sits close to the lake bed but this is far easier to achieve with this much simpler setup and just as effective. Hi mate, thanks again for commenting. Weed level is very subjective. I know anglers that will refer to chock solid carpets of the green stuff as a bit weedy. Iâve also met anglers that think it's weedy if they pull a few strands back on the retrieve. The question is this. Can you land carp from this water without having to dump the lead? If the answer is yes, then sure use this rig no problem. If the answer is no, gotta dump the lead, then youâd have to resort to something like the heli safe system or equivalent. You can also help yourself by reducing the size of the lead and changing the shape. Think in terms of something like a 1.5 -2oz zip lead. These low profile, stream lined leads are far easier to extract fish through. The other thing you might want to consider is rather than loop to looping the lead onto the swivel, add a ârotten bottomâ connection. Itâs a popular technique in sea fishing when fishing over rocky ground. I just use a thin bit of mono and granny knot the lead to the lead. Test it so that it breaks off fairly easily but is strong enough to withstand the force of the cast. Add or substrate granny knots to suit. Hope that makes sense. Best of luck, Matt.

If my silt in lake I fish is a foot deep do I bring both beads to just over a foot or just the top bead. Videos are great
Hi mate, itâs a bit like asking how long a piece of string should be lol. While the silt might be that deep it depends on what size of lead you are using, how firm the silt is and at what range are you fishing. Why donât you try the white wool trick? Just tie some white wool along your leader and make some casts to the range you need. Wind the lead back in and then note how far up the stain is. This will tell you where to sit the top bead (plus a little margin of safety). If you are using a helicopter rig, leave the bottom bead where it is or you might knock the hook point with your lead. I haven't spent much time fishing down the shallows here as they never venture down there in the winter. This year, Iâve been able to spend time there and when the conditions were right, I knew I had to change my approach for this heavily silted area. I knew there were some deeper holes that the fish had excavated but I also knew how difficult it would be to get a rig in place "first chuck" that would give me a fighting chance of a pickup. It was time to get experimenting. This is what I came up with and I was amazed at just how well it works!
Nice one mate....small advice needed...does dipping the popup in honey without feeder bait help in catching big fish.
Iâve never used honey so canât comment really. Honey is not going to last very long in the water. Bait flavour is not the edge to catch carp, big or small! A good rig, sharp hooks and a running lead (because the carp canât use the weight of the lead to eject the rig) is what you need.

Hi Chris, you can also wrap two extra turns of mono underneath the hair but the trouble is mono moves and youâll find the wraps come loose. You can just add a dab of super glue to hold it in place but I hate using it. It does work though. Yes you could add a few turns of braid underneath the hair to kick it out but doing that neatly would be a bit of a faff IMO. The key to simple rigs like this is the fact that they can be made quickly. TBH beads are hard to beat and as long as you use barbless hooks they can be recycled from rig to rig. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Ryan, yes mate absolutely but you need to be careful that the putty is perfectly evenly moulded around the sinker or that itâs weighted off centre but on the underside of the sinker when the rig sits on the bottom This creates this turning force to keep the hook pointing downwards. Personally I find putty can be a pain to work with and itâs quite expensive. Split shots are very cheap and a small box will last years so thatâs what I use. Cheers, Matt.

My lake is an old one Matt, its surrounded in trees, and over the years the gravel bottom has become layered with twigs and leaves, but the bottom is still firm. One, would your nylon rig be the best for this set up, I'm thinking it would. Two, my fish are smaller than yours a twenty being the best weight, but all are stunning, and have a Koi in most of them. Would starting on a 25cm hook-link and size 6 hook be about right? Thanks buddy.
Hi Richard, sounds like a real interesting water mate and quite similar to the nature of Beausoleil which was dug back in the 50s. Yes, Iâd go with the mono hair rig. I would definitely start off with the size 6s and a 25cm rig and adjust from there accordingly. I would definitely put on a pair of waders (if allowed) and spend some time paddling round the margins. Youâd be amazed at what you discover. I guarantee that some areas will be much clearer than others and these are the zones that I would concentrate on. A consistent and determined baiting campaign of areas where you can monitor feeding activity would pay great dividends in the longer term I reckon. All the best, Matt.

Well, thatâs a very big and very interesting question (future video no doubt lol). Iâll give you a few thoughts. Now, I donât know how youâre fishing so Iâm going blind here. In my experience, there are 3 areas to look at: rig, hook and lead setup. I see lots of problems in this area and itâs often to do with over complicated rigs. Your instinct to go back to basics is spot on. Simple rigs work better than complicated rigs. Just pick something that suits the situation. I mostly fish bottom baits straight out the bag. Have a go with the mono hair rig. If you fish with a mono rig, change your rig every cast, itâll transform your fishing. The best out of the packet hooks Iâve ever found are the Nash chod twisters. Yes I really do advocate binning the whole rig after one cast. I know it sounds expensive, but mono is cheap so itâll just cost you one hook. We have guests go through 4 packets in a week here but they catch.
What can kill your chances when the fishing is harder is your lead setup. For me, the classic lead clip setup used by so many is not the best. This is why I developed my trick shock and run style setups with a tell tale indicator (so that you know youâre being done). For the past few weeks here at Beausoleil, anglers were still being done (including myself) while using my trick setups, thatâs how hard the fishing had become. To fix the situation I went back to a pure running setup. I caught a couple of bangers then swapped all our incoming guests over to that method. It was like turning on a switch and we had photos of carp to look at once again! This is a very long way of saying all you need to use is my simple mono hair rig (or mono D rig) with a basic running lead: czcams.com/video/LzFina92brM/video.html. Food for thought I hope âşď¸

@@garydaniels3548 If the weed is light and you fish the clearer areas then my simple mono rig will work. Iâve caught loads of carp on bottom baits in weed. Itâs just that no-one has the confidence to do it and we only catch with what we fish with. Whenever Iâm up against heavy weed, my go-to approach would be a solid PVA but Iâd fish it with a trick lead setup as I show in our latest video: czcams.com/video/TPCvErlGGZ0/video.html Depending on your choice of lead and choice of insert you can create a very light semi fixed setup or a free running setup. If the weed is really bad then youâll need to use an outline inline style of inline lead (this is actually what the little inline lead inserts that I used on the solid PVA bag video are designed for). You need to set it to dump the lead on the take. I hate doing this but on some waters itâs the only way to land them. Hi there, mono rigs are designed for one use only. The good news is that 40cm of mono is cheap compared to fluoro, coated or braided materials. Any plastic bits (beads, blowback tubes etc.) can easily be moved between rigs and I touch up the hook point as necessary (only do that if youâve mastered the technique). I use mono rigs for most of my fishing and I always have a load pre-tied, ready to swap out. That means all I have to do to keep catching is change my rigs.
In terms of how often to recast, it dependsâŚI might leave a rig on a spot without moving it for 24hrs or I might give a spot 2 hrs before moving on. Only many years of experience on a particular water will tell you when to do what. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Kevin, I spent a little time on Horsehoe myself, many years ago. It all depends on how bad the weed is really. Sometimes it was so bad that if you didn't dump the lead youâd never land them anyway. Bonjour Ian, this reminds me that we really need to do a video on how to make a safe helicopter rig for rig tubing lol. I understand exactly what you are looking to do but just adding standard beads to rig tubing for a helicopter wonât work, youâre right.
What you need is to get a pack of Nash helicopter sleeves. The pack contains 5 sleeves and 5 beads. The beads are special because they have a large tapered hole that is a perfect fit on the thinner section of the sleeve. These are specifically designed for use with standard rig tubing. The hole in the bead is larger than the outside diameter of the tubing so in the take, the hooklink swivel will push the bead off the heli sleeve which then flies up the tubing in a frictionless manner. This makes the system 100% safe. For the hooklink swivel I would use a proper helicopter swivel with a large bore on one end. These should eliminate the risk of tangles and they sit nicely on the sleeve. I use the Nash quick change helicopter swivels. So thatâs how I would go about setting up this rig with rig tubing.
