I got on FFS in late 2019 and after using it for 4 years I can tell you that it is not fishing it is catching. Fortunately I am 70 years old and spent a lot of time fishing the old school way, which I find myself doing more and more each outing. For Guides like yourself you should be very concerned. With the mapping and FFS I can go to just about any lake and catch fish at will, why would I hire a guide. There is no mystery an more. Now when I watch the pros I say to myself what is the big deal. The commercial fisherman will clean the lakes out of panfish and it isn't going to take long.

the golf ball point is really spot on. I am of the assumption we were basing our "best" on a field of variable x. In this case x=knowledge and skill. If the value for x is filled by technology then knowledge and skill = null. Unless we're now basing "best" on who can use the technology better than the other. At this time I feel we're now basing our "best" on who can afford and use the technology best. And I'm making that distinction based on the highest paid level of fishing - B.A.S.S or MLF style tournaments. I think the agreed upon needs to be discussed first. Are fishing tournaments going to be who understands the nature of the beast best or who can find and capture them no holds barred? I feel and have always felt that tournaments should be technology deficient. I think the technology should be there to study and learn and then you put those lessons into practice in a tournament based structure. I do however, like your idea of levels - e.g. sonar and no sonar. Unfortunately I think, for those who wish to make this a career, we are at the mercy of the decisions the big tournament drivers make. I only hope the decisions are well thought out and made fair to all players. If we're picking the best, it needs to be a level playing field.

Not one dam comment about the fishery.
I’m a former tournament angler, 15+ years tournaments director, spent almost 20 years along with other fishermen raising money to stock 500,000 fingerling bass into the Ohio River.
It’s should not be about the sport of tournament fishing. FFS will decimate the population of Bass, Crappie and Catfish in a lot of lakes and rivers. There are tournaments for these three fish everywhere.
90% of fishermen do not realize how fragile their fisheries are and how quickly they can be destroyed.

100% Agree, panfish, muskie, spoonbills, big catfish are all at risk - food chain and predators are a delicate balance and always at risk as it is but FFS has thrown that balance off in so many ways not just the targeting of a larger percent of the population by using it. The impact will only get worse. It was minimal the first 4years or so but the last few years have been terrible and only getting worse. It will be too late before people actually realize how bad things have gotten.

Don't worry about what others are doing, YOU have to do your job and catch your best 5. I can't worry about what others are doing when I'm trying to convince a fish to eat my bait. And tech might help me find that fish. But I still have to figure out how to make it bite and catch it. Have had FFS since 2021, it doesn't always play, not even close. But it will send you down a rabbit hole into disappointment.

Love it or Hate. Someone will have to make an opposing trail.
I don’t know how you regulate a sport that is Policed by the state and federal agencies, bass are the property of the state and you follow their guidelines. Taxes are paid by the sport and fund things within the state. No other sport is regulated by the state like fishing. I have a Livescope and use it on a Pelican bass raider the unit is 3x the price of my boat and I get on em with it. All of the financial burdens Hank talks about have to be within a budget not everyone needs a 70k bass boat, but a 1990s boat under 5k with a livescope seems rational.
Imagine 2 mobile transducers that are dropped on both sides of an area your fishing like a marker buoy on 2 sides and poll data to the head unit and are being used in tandem with a FFS so 3 points of scanning and poll data faster than ever before and can produce a 3d image instead of the 20 degree field produced by livescope alone. The technology is coming and it’s just going to get more advanced.

  • @chaddrumm6809

It’s simple to me. I have no problem with 360 for example. 360 helps you find structure and fish along with side scan. Just think about it, these 2 techs help you locate and find fish on particular structures. Bottom line is with these 2 techs mentioned, you still have to FISH for them. The live interaction with the lure and the fish has absolutely no ethics/integrity especially in the PROFESSIONAL realm.

Wait, there's a few issues here. #1 too expensive. Um $2600 for a unit and the lvs34, even cheaper if you want to get a 32. Yet no issues on trolling motors running $2700-4k for spotlock models. I mean basic is $1600 for a basic 36v fortrex. So we are picking and choosing which equipment is too expensive. Wait #2, comparing compounds in a goofball, aluminum baits in baseball to ffs is apples to lemons. YOU still have to catch that fish even if you can pick it out. Your presentation and bait have to be correct to trigger that fish. Now you wanna talk about performance enhanced equipment in bass fishing....$500+ bass rods, wait DC baitcasters that use tech to eliminate backlashes. So now those anglers don't have to learn how to have an educated thumb to cast as the older generation did. So they should be banned because the increase the abilities of the less talented casters by helping their casts. It's such BULLSH#T. Fish what you want let best 5 a day win. Been using it for 3 yrs, guess what it doesn't always play. The minnow doesn't always work! It's just another tool for information, just like a 360, sidescan, and mapping. Like shallow water anchors, spotlock trolling motors, high-end reels and rods, expensive baits, attractant, braid, fc, hydrowaves. It's all used to try and catch a bass. We don't ban frog fishing because some aren't good at it. Punching, not everyone can fish that way. Should those be banned too because it give those anglers that excel at it an advantage. Kinda like some anglers that utilize ffs in the early parts of the year when fish are prespawn, out in deeper water, or schooling offshore. It doesn't help flipping mats, doesn't help frog fishing, doesn't help fishing thick grass, doesn't help fish a jig, shake head, or Texas rig when they are stuck to the bottom. It can show you cover, structure, ledges, but so does 360 and sidescan. See all that above is extreme, kinda like the complaining because some have figured out how to use a minnow to catch bass like some figured out how to punch grass, fish a jig, or a frog. It's a technique, it's the new chatterbait rage when it came out. I fish the Westcoast, fish already have adjusted to it. Just like they do every bait and technique that comes out and becomes the new rage. Get over it and go catch your best 5, however it be. The one with the biggest bag per day wins, just like before. They all have it, it's not expensive. If that is the argument I wanna hear banning of spotlock trolling motors because it helps those anglers fish slow that those that can't afford it have to struggle to keep their boat in position, the ban on shallow water anchors because it helps those who can afford it sit still in shallow water without using a trolling motor. All of them are tools, if you know how to use them they become part of your strategy and approach, and success.

What an absolute boomer take. There are three different biological case studies done by the Universities of Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri on the effects of forward facing sonar on game fish populations. All three of these studies show that there was zero negative effects on the fish populations. Professional fisherman said the same things about high def sonar(CHIRP), side imagining, 360, and built in nav charts as they are saying now about FFS. Times change, technology changes, and techniques change. In the words of one of one of my commanders from my time in the US Army while in Iraq, "The battlefield is an everchanging and ever-evolving space, you either adapt or you die." The same applies to professional fishing, adapt or die.

I mean in the 80s it was good but now with so many fishing. Sorry if youre under 35, you need to limit your days to 2 times a month only.......sounds ridiculous doesn't it. Yet this is close to the argument of how ffs is destroying fishing.

Bass on the other hand aren’t going to stop evolving and being conditioned due to the fishing pressure. The only leg they have to stand on is their complaint about cost. A 50” flatscreen when they first came out was like $4000, I just a 72” for $300 something that has way more technology “smart TV”. Prices should come down. The big 3 are just out here to rape folks. If you want to complain, go lobby and complain to them not the people who are being taken advantage of by the industry. 40 years from now some old f’er will be complaining “when I was a kid we only had FFS, it’s too unfair now”. I've noticed a lot of the Pro legends are starting to speak up and be heard on their FFS thoughts. Hats off to them ! They have used the knowledge they started gaining as kids to get where they are today and they expect other to have the same skill level that they do. I've been fishing for 60 years and never needed FFS to find and catch fish. I got no respect for the wanna be pro that stands on the front of his boat , rod in hand , staring down at his FFS waiting to see the perfect fish to throw his lure at. That's not talent or skill at all !

I do not like looking at a pro team having more computers on board.More than a lot of airplanes.i could mount a forward looking radar on my 2012 bass tracker pro 165 . I could compete with big boys.i golf a lot .i have to use a spec ball. They do sale golf balls that will go about 40 yards farther.if you get caught using one of these balls you will removed from our league. The bass pro teams need new rules. Number one no forward looking radar. Bass released where caught.

FFS will affect all bass anglers eventually in that fish are over- exposed to lures all year round. This will decrease catch ratios and we will start losing recruitment to the sport. Also, it is being dominated by anglers that nobody has heard of. Not that that is bad in and of itself, but it is hurting the partisan fan base. We MUST have a strong fan base across a broad range of geographically dispersed anglers and a broad range of tactics and lure usage to appeal to a broad range of fans. Come on people think long-term here. It's not about pro-FFS or anti-FFS, it's about protecting the resource, protecting the spirit of competition, and protecting the integrity of the sport. I don't care if FFS is your thing or not. I care about Bass Fishing and continuing to grow the sport.

2:38 Ahhh there it is ..... He cant even say it with a straight face. "Not all electronics, but FFS, yes ban it."
Translation - " I'm all for using tech to catch fish, but if I'm not good with that tech and my friends arent either, then we should just ban it and go back to the good ole days where we was winnin and not these dang kids."
FFS is certainly divisive, but not how you think. It almost exactly correlates with an age split. If you're over 50, its the devil. If you're not, it's the Rosetta Stone.
Prior to COVID and FFS taking over, the bass fishing industry was on life support. It was a hyper exclusive good ole boys club.
Covid hit and shut the world down. Guess what was still allowed? Bass fishing sales went nuclear hot during Covid. Nuclear.
You saw an increase in customers by over 300%. You also saw people realize this hobby has a league system that anyone can join.
Theres the real rub. Hank and his ilk are furious that, all of a sudden, they're outnumbered at the local derbys by newbies with fully loaded next gen boats and A++ setups. More than that, they start losing to guys who didn't fish 4 years ago at all.
Its not about ffs really. It's about the lie being exposed: Anybody can be good at fishing. They intentionally framed the pros as a cut above, but it was always the access to tech that was the difference.
Now, that field has been leveled. And look what happened. Its all young, urban types who are rocking it. They've been exposed.
Funny how Hank rails against ffs but was THE main Pusher of side scan. Its all about legacy. These old hats are getting abused in tournaments because they cant figure out the tech. 40 years ago, Hank WAS the guys he's against now.
They hate it because they arent good at using it. Simple as that.

FFS takes the challenge and mystery out of fishing. It's turned BASS and other fishing tournaments into watching (or not watching) boring fish catching exhibitions! Really, if that's what I was interested in watching, I'd go to Dave & Busters and watch people play video games. It has the potential to greatly harm fisheries. In golf they don't let tournament golfers use a yardage device. Why?...to protect the integrity of the game. In hunting some will think they're hunting on a high fence property. The fact is, no matter the acreage, it's still a cage and not hunting...just shooting and cheating yourself of the challenge of the hunt at that. In fishing FFS takes away the challenge of finding fish and a successful pattern...it clearly takes a day on the water from fishing to just plain catching.

Hey Callum, great topic, by the way. Now I agree with some of the points Hank Parker has but disagree with others.
Buckle up. This may be a long one, lol.
Now Hanks view on Randy is really soft in my view. Randy has stated that all you need to do with FFS is drive out on the lake, and they basically fall on your hook. He called for the government to ban them from everyone. Called angler cheats, and snagers basically, the sky is falling.
I would be ok with the pro organizations putting a limit on how many screens and transducers, but banning it would be short-sighted.
They always say they want encouragement young anglers, and now they are reaping the fruits of this. You have to think these young anglers have 4 years of high school tournaments, then 4+ years of college/ university tournaments leading into higher fishing opportunities.
And these guys are not your truck drive who does good on the Thursday nighter who decides to try out in the bigs in his mid-20s.
As far as high school fishing goes, it would be good to teach them the basics of Bass fishing without FFS. Not because of what Hank said about the price, if you're dishing out 100k + on a boat, FFS is now as common as a side scan.
As he was talking about the golf balls not changing, don't forget that the course has set distances and they are not going to spend millions of dollars to make the courses bigger.
The Bassmaster Classic was not won 100% with FFS. Some in the top 10 never even turned it on.
Basically, let's keep a cool head about this and see how it plays out.
    Regards, Steven 😎

His statement that FFS guys would fail without it and they are not versed enough to succeed is based on nothing but his opinion. Like RB, he is pushing his opinion and because his opinion is shared by others he feels it becomes fact. Yes a jon boat and a bass boat can comete against each other but one has an very distinct advantage over the other. If they were equal and FFS is the key then anglers could save the money on the boat and get FFS at the highest level. As technology has progressed in the world, those who refuse to learn how to use it fall behind, then wine about it and say it should be regulated.

@@anthoyellis5944no it's not live but continues to sweep, updated picture, shows everything but with a delay. But utilize the same way. Remember watching a tournament on Eufaula, everyone was fishing brush and making exact casts. Those that did good had either had livescope or a 360, everyone else suffered and beat the bank......but zero uproar then.....only when new blood comes in and starts winning. Then it's bad. Someone mentioned a tour for anglers like Christie, hackney, and Coxs, yet Christie has been using ffs since the beginning of panoptix gen 1. See change is scary for the older generation that doesn't understand it or unable to utilize it because of the "fish history". They do what worked before and the new generation is eager to try something different. They fish new lakes, they don't have history to fish, but trust in the information their electronics provide them. And then succeed. When you don't have past history to fish sometimes you're in a better place because you don't have that preconceived idea of what you need to do because of what you did before.

  • @b.s.fishing5902
    @b.s.fishing5902 Před 5 měsíci +1

The history of golf isn't changing because people are hitting the ball farther...old guys who run elite country clubs got mad because todays elite drivers of the ball were hitting it so far that they weren't using the same clubs as the people they grew up watching (when a 300 yard drive just didn't happen or at least nowhere close to as often). Then you had courses going out and purchasing new land to extend the length of courses to try to get back to "the old way of golf". I get the nostalgia aspect of that but at least for golf, the young golfers are actually training like athletes which allows them to hit farther...along with a bunch more technology in clubs.
As far as FFS goes in tourney's, from a TV viewing standpoint the only difference I have noticed is that the angler looks down more. Still just looking at the guys back no matter what they are doing from any era. The information that you can get from both all depends on how much the angler is actually telling you. From the competition aspect, I would agree that it creates a disparity at the HS level. But once you get to the top end of the sport I don't have any issues with it. I think that saying that the guys can't fish without it is quite frankly just stupid and sounds more like a grumpy dock owner yelling at someone to leave their fish alone.

So now, pros have to see what and how bass start or stop chasing a bait? Now prose literally have to see which retrieve is getting a reaction and which isn't, before ever feeling a strike?
