Mouth full of teeth you’d think that the milk would no longer fulfill their bigger tummies just like in humans. We have seen other baby monkeys who have lost their moms around the 5 to 6 months of age and they have survived. It must be just out of comfort and habit that younger monkeys, not babies or infants, demand milk from their mommy monkeys still.
There are many different macaque species, and lengths of time for infants suckling varies among them. The composition of the milk produced is different, depending on whether the mother birthed a male or female infant. Milk for the males is richer. After some weeks or months of nursing on demand, the teat also used as a pacifier, and unlimited rides from the mother, it’s time to wean, and that is done slowly. The infants hate it, and some never grow off the teat. Some have suggested the milk is designed to be addictive, to make the infant more likely to nurse. The combination of taste, comfort, and not needing to forage as long as the milkbar is there, makes the young fight to stay on the teat.
