  • To celebrate Dublin’s music culture and community, District has created: “A Night at the Cobblestone” - a film that documents live Irish Trad music performances from inside The Cobblestone pub in Smithfield, Dublin 7.
In October 2021, Marron Estates Ltd. applied to the council for permission to construct a nine-storey hotel at 77-80 North King Street, in Smithfield, Dublin 7, which includes The Cobblestone.
As a protected structure, the pub would have been retained as part of the proposed development, but an outdoor area and the pub’s Backroom venue would have been demolished.
The plan proved contentious: almost 700 objections were lodged with the council; an online petition, Save The Cobblestone, gathered almost 35,000 signatures; and rallies in support of the pub were held.
In late November 2021, planning permission to alter The Cobblestone was refused, resulting in a rare win for music and culture lovers in Dublin city.
This film showcases the magic that happens in there on a regular Monday evening.
    The film features performances from:

    - Ispíní na hÉireann
    - Sam Noonan
    - Emmet O’Brien
    - Adam Mohamed
    - and very special guests.
Shot and edited by CLTV.FILM, produced by Adrian Errity.
This project was funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

I was at the Cobblestone that night - magical, and something to be treasured and supported. What’s recorded here shows the breadth of traditional music, from the old songs and styles to a song about the pandemic. The genre is alive and vital and The Cobblestone an essential venue for it.

I'm old enough to remember when artists were horrified by apartheid.

I loved the piece by Emmet O'Brien at the end. My family is from Waterford but I lived and worked in Dublin. Dublin is the only city in the world where you can live in the past, present and future all at the same time. I love the place and for me he captured it.

thank you so much for uploading this. I have such fond memories of both Dublin and this pub. I think I've never felt more at home in my life than when I used to live in Dublin. I'm in tears right now - happy, nostalgic tears

I wish those reciting “spoken word” would not have adopted an American cadence to their poetry. All modern/popular poetry need not be Slam Poetry with urban/rap/Black American influences. Stay true to your cultural roots.
