  • When Yu-Gi-Oh Cards COPIED Magic the Gathering. It's easy to forget that the YuGiOh Trading Card Game has its roots in the MTG Tradition. From the original manga, to specific fan favorite cards, to specific archetypes, lets celebrate the inspiration that brought us our favorite card game (and how MTG might have copied back).

      Yes, except it probably even worse than shapesnatch as its 1550 atk prevents things like elemental floater (giant rat, etc), inferno reckless summon and stuff.

      @@CegebYTPThat's a big part of Morinphen meme: its 50 extra ATK is making it so hard to make it even remotely playable.

    Upper Deck didn’t switch to spell card with the advent of the physical game immediately. I remember buying LOB, MRD, and MRL packs. Spell came later, but I still have the older magic cards today.

    Gifts Ungiven is a riff on the card Intuition which was first printed in 1997

  • @williamkeiser7562
    @williamkeiser7562 Před 2 měsíci +13

    Painful choice sounds like another copy of a magic card called intuition. Gifts ungiven is just a play on intuition. Hard to say magic copied Yu-Gi-Oh on that one.

    • @johnsanko4136
      @johnsanko4136 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Except that Painful Choice was printed in 1996 while Intuition was in Tempest, which was 1997. It's possible that there was some inspiration there, but also possible that it was convergent evolution.

  • @kennydarmawan13
    @kennydarmawan13 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Another reason why Gifts Ungiven aren't as busted in MtG is because of its cost.
    Tearlaments and Ishizu having "costs" would definitely balance out their effects. If MtG doesn't just spam Bojuka Bog whenever needed.

  • @JayconianArts
    @JayconianArts Před 2 měsíci +1

    4:09 Gifts ungiven actually was a attempt at making a more balanced version of an older card from Tempest in 1997 called Intuition. Search three cards, your opponent chooses one that goes to hand and others go to into graveyard. People would just pull three copies of the same card to garuentee it comes into their hand.

    • @williamdrum9899
      @williamdrum9899 Před 2 měsíci +1

      And then Wizards forgot "fail to find" exists, meaning that Gifts Ungiven lets you pretend you only found 2 cards even if that's legally impossible

    Painful Choice feels like a version of MtG's Fact or Fiction, which was notorious during it's time in Standard.
    It's a spell that also shows your opponent five cards and makes them decide what you get.

    • @johnsanko4136
      @johnsanko4136 Před 2 měsíci

      Intuition is the real comparison, except it's search for 3 cards, instead of 5. It's unfortunately a reserved list card, and brutally strong so it's way more expensive than what it should be.

      Honestly Yugioh has something great going for it: the variety in character designs.

  • @ironmuro
    @ironmuro Před 2 měsíci +11

    eh, Summoned Skull's connection to Lord of the Pit is a little bit of a stretch. As is Vengeful Bog Spirit and Gifts Unforgiven/Painful Choice. Those seem more like a coincidence then anything. The Toon monsters might be as well, but I am willing to buy that more since Pegasus is an American character and yeah, obviously his creation in the manga is meant to parody Magic. I'm surprised you didn't mention how the discard pile in both games are called the graveyard directly as a remnant of that. Maybe it was too obvious to point out.
    When you mentioned Magic also took inspiration from Yugioh in kind, I thought you would bring up Ob Nixlls the Adversary being inspired by Obelisk the Tormentor. Not only because the name is a dead give away like Moriphen/Morifen is, but also because there have been retrains of Ob Nixxlls, making him stand out more.

    • @Envy_May
      @Envy_May Před 2 měsíci +7

      the lord of the pit connection is a bit stronger i think if you consider
      - if you compare the japanese versions of each card, the part where it says "summon demon" on the magic card is character-for-character _identical_ to summoned skull's name
      - they shared a converted cost of 7
      - summoned skull initially used to be drawn all goopy and pink

    • @ironmuro
      @ironmuro Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@Envy_May "Summon Demon" isn't exactly a unique phrase. Neither is the goopy pink aesthetic. They are just kinda standard things in demonology and horror. Demons being incomplete and twisted humanoid forms. That's like saying World of Warcraft was inspired by Yugioh because they have a spell called "Summon Demon" for warlocks, and the tier 6 for that class has a skull and demon flesh aesthetic. (The tier 6 Malefic Raiment set really does look like Summoned Skull, if you haven't seen it, is also very pink and red, and its remaster tier 20's Mythical Diabolic Raiment has a more white skeletal look.)
      Also. where do you get Summon Skull being a cost of seven? Its a level 6 monster. Closet thing Yugioh has to a cost is tribute summoning, which would cost 1 for Summoned Skull. Tribute summoning wasn't even a thing was Summoned Skull was introduced. I guess it is sometimes a level 7 in the manga, but it is also sometimes a level 5, so its just crazy how often that level is changed until it was cemented as a card.
      I'm not saying its impossible, I'm just not eentirely convinced it isn't a coincidence like the Malefic and Diabolic Raiments are to Summoned Skull

      @DroppedMyMarbles Před 2 měsíci +3

      i think summoned skull is unironically THE best argument, don't quote me on this but i'm pretty sure mr. takahashi was pretty open about summoned skull being based on lord of the pit

    • @Envy_May
      @Envy_May Před 2 měsíci

      @@ironmuro it's always been level 7 in the manga. konami changed it to 6, i don't think it was ever changed in the manga to anything else unless you count the labyrinth battle game which isn't canon because it's not in-universe all the monsters have different stats

      The only art comparison he made is summoned skull which is very obviously based on lord of the pit in the manga, both are winged humanoid demons with two horns on the top of their heads, both are in the same pose with the same framing and the same exposed pink muscles and bones. seriously go look at the original bandai card and try to tell me with a straight face that it isn't based on lord of the pit

    I think Paul from Team APS said it best on his podcast, while a lot of TCGs, including Yu-Gi-Oh! borrow some mechanics from MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh! is probably the best card game to broad out and go away from those rules, and became its own unique card game
