      Forty years ago my boyfriend and I moved 3,000 miles cross country in an old Volkswagen Squareback. The car had been living in upstate NY for ten years, and was badly rusted around the bottom from road salt. We overloaded it with all our wordly goods and drove it almost to death crossing the continental divide. All this is to say that the experience gave me enormous respect for Volkswagons.

      Spoke with a friend who is a Volkswagen mechanic and he informed me that there are certain engines that one should avoid when purchasing a new or used car from the past decade. I don’t remember the model numbers of the engines that he quoted but they affect the Euro market only unless you also have a Dieslegate engine. The bodies hold up real well but interior trim has a lot to be desired, and black interiors? Here in the EU it is quite apparent that German designers suffer from extreme depression and desire to pass it on to the populace, my god black or dark depressing interiors and it is apparent in the Opel products as well!

    Spent my youth around concrete in the summers, it was my fathers occupation in the states. Have built a home in the next country over and I was appalled at the fact that they do not use a curing compound on top of the concrete after it receives its finish. This allows a controlled release of moisture as the concrete cures eliminating the need to water the surface. Watering the surface actually weakens the surface leading up to flaking off the top layers let alone changing the strength of the overall slab that one pours. Ready mix is nice and convenient for extremely small projects but why haven’t the Southern Europeans come up with a two cubic meter concrete truck that fits on a Sprinter or Mitsubishi chassis? It can get through the very narrow roads we have in the villages in the southern Mediterranean countries.
    Wow! I salute you for your patience and endurance in this small project! BRAVO!
    BTW May early experience in construction lead me to a degree in Architecture many years ago, not my occupation today but still a passion that I carry with me. Still keep up with new tech in the building industry, too bad they are still stuck in technology that is over several hundred years old here in the South of the EU.

    Love your “get it done” on this project! 2 questions, would have been possible to find similar rocks to complete the floor with same style? And second, the new floor was quite deep, it seemed perfect opportunity for laying down all plumbing and electrical. Curious to see how it progress ❤

    • @NotUselessYet
      @NotUselessYet  Před 11 měsíci +15

      Yes, I have found some similar stones, and I think I can find more quite simply. The part I concreted is going to be more dining area than kitchen area, so electrics will go in the wall and water on the other side of the room.

    Should have got self leveling cement and trawled what you did to smooth and spread. More water will allow it to flow and not be so thick … longer dry and set but would give you time to correct Cement Plop. Put down a tarp under your mixer so you don’t have to chisel the droppings off your porch.

    As the old lady who scrubs the floor in my own home, ease of cleaning is more important to me and probably your wife than authentic appearance. Yes, my home is less than 50 years old. But when you have over 270 square feet of floor to scrub on your hands and knees it's a lot of work. and I cannot imagine any other way to get such a rough stone floor as yours clean. I think ease of cleaning in why you found scraps of a terrazzo and economy was why it was only in a few places. And terrazzo dates back to Roman times so it is authentic. Putting in in only where you don't have cabinets would help reduce the cost.

      I am with you on those, it was hard to see but the mesh was off the ground, probably only a couple of cm though. I didn't put a membrane down because we're on the first floor, above a stone vault which has a lot of stone, so also unnecessary to insulate I think; but you are basically spot on!

    Great, another task scratched off the list. Is not the first time you got the quantities wrong, is better to aim high by 30% and reach an understanding with the store to return leftover unused closed bags, instead of doing stuff on two different occasions. The water addedd to the cement does not increase it's volume, for some weird chemical property. The steel reinforcement was greatly exaggerated, anti-seismic type. 😁 Anyway, things are moving nicely!
