I still to this day do not understand how Sydney Olympics got away with this atrocity. Nevermind lost gold medals, vault is one of the most dangerous apparati and everything needs to be per international standard. Funny how the commentator was saying how she was too high on the vault to block....well DUH the vault was 5 cm lower than it should have been. Even the best gymnasts in the world can't cover that. Really, after two or three fell, they should have checked. This was disgraceful.

She's a genius for even managing to put this to her feet on her second vault. At her heigh, the incorrect height of the vault would have even more impact since she needs every centimetre to get her twists/somersaults around. Poor Svetlana. Four years of hard training for someone else to just snatch your dreams away.

(I did feel awful for her here but she landed that 2nd fine which says those 5cm really wasn't the entire problem) she was wobbly on beam. She couldn't hit her 180 splits on beam OR fx. She was the most famous of the era, because of her nasty attitude towards coaches and othet althletes. If she was winning....she was great. If she wasnt...she was a MEGA bitch!! I was never a Khorkina fan. I found her awkward and arrogant. However, she was robbed in Sydney. There were really no gymnasts out there at the time that could compete with her. She would have easily won had the vault been the right height. I knew just from looking at it at the beginning of the competition that it was too low. It was obvious. It was an incredibly stupid, inexcusable mistake and whoever set the vault should have been held criminally liable.

How they harm Russian athletes. On the eve of the 2000 Olympics, Svetlana Khorkina is one of the best gymnasts on the planet: gold at the 96 Games, five wins at the World Cup, three at the European Championship. For complete greatness, only the Olympic gold in the all-around, the coolest thing in this sport, was not enough.
Svetlana is going to Sydney in the status of the main favorite of the Games, having already managed to get a personal jump of Khorkin II and the title "Queen of Uneven Bars"by that time. But the dream of the title of absolute champion failed - in the all-around Svetlana takes 10th place. It was all the fault of the unforgivable mistake of the organizers, who set the horse for jumping 5 cm below the norm.

Sveta must have been confused during warm up why she could not land the vault. What makes me confused is that once it was realized that the vault was too low, no one announced it. The other athletes on the floor did not notice and no one said anything until after Sveta and American Elise Ray had already gone to the next apparatus and fell. They should have given the athletes a choice or restarting or redoing the routine after failing on the vault.

She used that height to her advantage and created unique skills that complimented her additional height. Have you seen Nina Derwael? She is 3 inches TALLER than Svetlana- and won Olympic GOLD on bars, the hardest event to incorporate long legs and a tall body into. The best gymnasts take what God gives them and make the most of it- which she did. There’s a reason she has all the world and Olympic medals she does.
