WHY YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR FERRITIN LEVEL: Not Just For Anemia
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 10. 2021
- A ferritin test measures the amount of stored iron in your body. Doctors usually order a ferritin test if they are suspecting anemia, which can lead to a lack of oxygen in your blood. However, ferritin is also a marker for inflammation; with both high and low levels indicating possible serious underlying problems you may not be aware of.
Ferritin increases when there is chronic inflammation and infection in the body. When ferritin is high, they get deposited in every organ in the body including the liver, heart, pancreas, and brain and can cause damage. The greatest concentrations of ferritin are typically in the cells of the liver. So, when ferritin is high, especially in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), it can lead to scarring and cirrhosis. Think of it as ‘rusting’ of the liver.
Ferritin is also elevated in many types of cancer, primarily due to inflammation. However, some cancers can also be associated with low levels of ferritin, such as colon cancer. Watch the video and find out why you need to check your ferritin levels, not just to check if you have anemia, but to make sure you have no other problems lurking around.

Brikging up my ferritin and total iron improved sleep apnea, energy, and anxiety has decreased substantially
What was your ferritin level at? And how long did it take to bring up?
@jacobconti64 How did you bring up your levels? I have sleep apnea
Brilliant video!
Mine is 197 in Sept 2023, and in January 2023, it was 198. First time, my GP said it was high ferritin probably because I had Covid in Dec, 2022. Second time (September 28, 2023) he said it was because my thyroid level was too low (0.350). He was rushing through the lab report and was out in less than 8 minutes. Maybe it’s time to look for a specialist. I am concerned to say the least. Very informative video. Thank you.
@Dina52328… in terms of diagnosis for Hemochromatosis you should keep it simple and ask for the DNA test to see if you are homozygoot, heterozygoot or none… Don’t let some old fashioned ‘specialists’ start with a classical liver biopsy or similar… this ferritin is also just a guid line and not always accurate… I was diagnosed hereditary hemochromatosis at 62, so quite late, but this DNA test gave a quick indication!
also ask for a full iron panel and see if serum iron and transferrin saturation% is also elevated and if so do the genetics test for the HFE gene. If they normal ferritin is likely elevated by inflammation and it could be any inflammation not just metabolic syndrome or NAFLD or AFLD, check CRP and IL6 for inflammation.
Lovely piece of advice..so well explained

Thank you for your video. Slightly different issue... what do you do if you have polycythemia vera, and your iron is now super low from all the phlebotomies? To get my blood viscosity back into safe range, I have had quit a few phlebotomies and am down at 6.9. I will need a phleb. every 4-6 weeks now, so it will be had to ever raise it again, and I am actually told not to raise my iron! Isn't it bad if you go for long periods with severely low iron? The medications for PV are harmful, I don't want to take them to slow down the rate of phlebotomies and simply trade one set of health issues for another set a few years down the road... And how can my serum iron be high, but my ferritin be low? Is that a problem with Hepcidine regulation? JAK2 PV is an iron tug of war....what to do...I've read a lot, solutions seen elusive.
Can high ferritin levels in Blood cause frequent Hemolysis of Red Blood Cells ?
There has to be a mistake with mind being 24.0 reference: 23.9-336.2 Ny/mL.😮
Hi. Sir my ferrtin is 19.
Mine was 55 in sept
Ok … what diet ?
Mine is 2.. was 4 before I started supplementing 2 months back... Do I have cancer?
Take Vitron C 65mg every other day in the mornings on an empty stomach at least one hour before eating. Also, you may want to check for H Pylori because that nasty gut bacteria lives off your iron and over half the population has it. If your stool is black, then go to a colonoscopy to be on the safe side. No way you would lose that much blood to take you to a 4 ferritin if you were bleeding through the intestinal tract. Your stool would be black. Most likely an absorption issue due to low stomach acid and/or H Pylori. Low stomach acid from taking acid reducing medications can kill your iron levels. A lot to this. BTW, I've been in healthcare some 30 years with training in integrative functional medicine. Take care.
Is ferritin level of 3 dangerous?
Yes Jesus Christ
So if you’re ferritin level is low you have colon cancer that’s comforting 😂
Mine is 13!! Total Iron 68. How do I get it up?
Taking iron supplements and eating iron rich foods. When taking iron, always make sure to check your levels here and there.
My iron is 12 and ferritin is 15. Just started supplementing. 😢
The goal is for ferritin to be at least 70, but preferably 100 and even 125 for females who are menstruating. Vitron-C 65mg every other day will work wonders when combined with a good B-complex vitamin. BTW, I've been in healthcare some 30+ years trained in integrative functional medicine.
@@Total_Body_Fitness_USAwhat about red blood cells ? Does iron deficiency cause red blood cells to be a little high mines is considered high @5.13 on quest lab but normal on Kaiser's lab
@@Total_Body_Fitness_USAalso does iron deficiency cause high absolute neutrophils and white blood cells?
MY FERRITIN IS 600 BUT I HAVE NORMAL IRON WHY
Did you ever find out ? My ferritin is 630 , and I have low iron , I have had colonoscopy etc , doctors have no clue what caused my high ferritin
My ferritin is low at 13, but all other iron levels are normal. Should I still supplement with iron?
My nurse practitioner said yes. I’m the same as you and she believes ferritin should be at least at 50
My ferritin was 6, but iron was in low normal range, I had 5 iron infusions
@@jesusis1459 did the fusion help
Supplement with Vitron C 65mg every other day on an empty stomach first thing in the mornings about an hour before eating. At 13 your body can't function properly even if you have normal RBC and hemoglobin. Should be at least 100! BTW, I've been in healthcare some 30 years with training in integrative functional medicine. Check for H-Pylori infection because that nasty bacteria lives off your iron. Also, never ever take acid reducing medications because that will kill your ability to absorb iron and other minerals as well as protein.
@@jesusis1459 Are you on testosterone replacement therapy? Also, check for an H Pylori infection. Do you take acid reducing medication? Something is dropping your ferritin. You may consider a colonoscopy to be safe considering you are not donating blood too frequently.
It's 4, what do I do?!
Do you have hair loss
@@priyankabalaguru8437i had hair loss with 13 ferritin. It finally stopped shedding so much when I got my ferritin up to 20 with supplements.
I eat a ton of sugar and have ferritin level 0f 6
My ferritin is 10 but my iron is at normal levels
My ferritin 7 and iron low and MCB small
Considering your RBC count and Hemoglobin is normal, you have iron deficiency without anemia. You will never feel your best unless your ferritin is at 100.
