BLACK MIRROR Season 6 MAZEY DAY Reaction - DID NOT EXPECT THAT! - First Time Watching

  • Welcome to our Mazey Day reaction! This is the fourth episode of Black Mirror season 6 and oh boy! We were definitely not expecting this from a Black Mirror episode. First time watching this and we have to say this episode has some top notch performances from Zazie Beetz, Clara Rugaard & Danny Ramirez. It gives us some more social criticism this time targeted at the paparazzi and how we as consumers have a say in what is right or wrong. We hope you enjoy as we react and have a discussion regarding the meaning of this episode.
In a day and age where everyone is a paparazzi this episode takes a look back at a time where forging photos or creating deepfakes was much harder. But the consequences still spread like wildfire.
This is technically a RED MIRROR episode but the creators chose not to disclose that as an effort to not give away anything about the plot. Even though this was a smart move I'm hesitant to say it didn't play a part on how this episode was perceived.
These new episodes with a tone that leans into the Horror genre are an effort from the creators to divorce themselves from what the show is meant to be. As artists ourselves we respect the bold move but we also understand how it would've been better to just classify this episode as something outside of the traditional for a Black Mirror episode.
All in all this season has been fantastic. Great acting all around, interesting premises and some deep criticisms that don't shy away from pointing the Black Mirror at ourselves.

This and the next episode are actually kinda pilot for a spin-off show " Red Mirror " which is focused more on horror elements, i think it shows that clearer in the last ep of this season.

You definitely have a point there!! Which speaks volumes about the fanbase and their respect for other viewers and fans of the show! We are SO GLAD we weren't spoiled, it truly made the twist at the end that much more powerful! We loved the correlation between papparazzi and the monstrosity of it - the way victims are in front of the camera throughout the episode. It just broke our heart to see that Mazy was a victim in all her shapes - as an actor and a werewolf.

The twist made my jaw drop on the floor because I would never ever even for a second would have a thought that she would turn into a warewolf! PTSD, a sense of guilt, drug addiction, but not THIS! Amazing episode! This season is honestly smth else and I think it's my fav for now tbh! Thank you guys for your reaction, didn't know what to expect but really glad you liked it as much as I did! it was a nice homage to 'American Werewolf in London' (it's a testimony to how good the special effects were even back then). as people pointed out, you realize the twist behind the dialogue earlier in the episode from her car 'hitting a man' to the doctor telling her that 'it has gotten control of you', etc

Yes, most people miss the homage to Werewolf in London, a total classic. There's also a nod to the film Wolf with Jack Nicholson, and I love the colloquial metaphor that the paparazzi eventually "feed each other to the wolves."

This & the finale was them trying out a prototype for a new show, Red Mirror covering supernatural events. I was so surprised at the ending to this but apparently the signs were all there if you watch werewolf shows & movies. From the Supermassive Black Hole song to the moon constantly being in shot to the Doctor saying its about making it through the night and the next night, typically you'd say making it through the day. Ok, that last one may be reaching.
I thought this was a good episode, I just was so shocked at the ending, I didnt know what to make of it at first.

We really enjoyed it! That twist came out of nowhere for the type of show Black Mirror is. But this episode is a statement from the creators. They are doing some things differently and we think it is fair. 3 episodes that cater to the already established Black Mirror audience and 2 episodes that start to take us in a different direction. I told you "I have a feeling that you are going to like the episode." I didn't know why, or how to explain it, it was just a feeling. After seeing it I thought "OK, some people will probably not like it, because of this fantastic dimension, which in principle has nothing to do with Black Mirror, but I DO like it, and I don't know why, maybe it's the twist, which is so unexpected, or maybe it's something else". Some reactors helped me: it's quite consistent with the usual themes of Black Mirror, it talks about our entertainment consumer society, we treat stars like dehumanized products, the paparazzi are monsters but we are all part of the system and we are all monsters. This episode also shows the material precariousness of the paparazzi: they can earn a lot of money all at once but never regular cash flow.
Finally, have you seen From Dusk Till Dawn? I have a STRONG FEELING that you will like this very entertaining and funny movie!

It was a wild twist! I know it caught a lot of people off guard for a BM episode but we do believe not saying it was meant to be a Red Mirror episode was the right call. It would've given the twist away. But I think if we judge it as a different kind of BM episode we can all agree this is not bad at all. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but we love things that are out of the norm and definitely appreciated the risks the creators took with this. We enjoyed it and we're glad others did as well!

What a great reaction! I really enjoyed this episode - I thought it was fun, exhilarating and surprising. I personally love that Black Mirror is trying new things, and I trust Charlie Brooker's instincts in where he wants to take the show. It saddens me to see the amount of negativity aimed at this episode - much of it ignoring the quality of what's on screen and instead focusing on the opinion that this isn't what Black Mirror 'should' be. But for me Black Mirror is a show that is constantly shifting and evolving, and after a slightly underwhelming season 5, it needed freshening up. So I loved your reaction; it's so refreshing to see a positive response to this episode and see you both genuinely enjoying it. And I think you're both going to really enjoy Demon 79.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Před 11 měsíci +2

Yes yes and YES. Thank you! Sometimes as viewers it can be hard to understand what the creators intention or direction is. We think that in the case of this episode it was clear as day they wanted a shift. Reading more into this episode specifically it was originally meant to be a Red Mirror episode. But they feared that by marketing it this way it would give away the twist. And we agree. With a little research people would’ve understood what the reasoning behind calling it a Black Mirror episode was. But aside from that we think this is pretty much on brand with BM albeit while they use other storytelling techniques. We also understand how it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but then again…this is Black Mirror…it’s never really been a crowd pleaser.

I feel like paparazzi in my part of the world are not toxic like they are in USA or United Kingdom... This must have something to do with the size of the stardom in French Canada. 😅 Eveybody know each other, probably including the paparazzi.
Sure, we do have cheap magazines and websites covering meaningless stories about our stars, but I don't read them, so I don't really know how bad it can be.
Finally, I don't think many people here would agree that stars *have to* deal with paparazzi because it's part of "the deal"... 🤷‍♂ Toxic and abusive photographers and reporters are just that: abusive. :(
