I could listen to Henry Rollins talk about the 10 best phone numbers in the phone book
LOL. Me too.
I agree
"There are very few phone numbers that can so adequately communicate the address at which someone can be reached in such a short and memorable way. This phone number should be on the front page of the phone book."
And about how much more difficult it was to dial numbers in the 80s.
I've seen him twice doing spoken word, i could sit and listen for hours on end.
''Every house should come with this record'' ... that is awesome. Also Miles 'Kind of Blue'
Great line
I heard Kind of Blue as a teenager and it blew my mind as to what music could be. I only knew about popular and rock music at the time. A cousin was in a jazz band and they played stuff I had never heard. Then my cuz showed me Kind of Blue. I was like whoa this isn't music this is art being expressed on a very deep level. Coltrane is the same.
@@frankgarza9435 Well yeah Coltrane is on Kind of Blue :P
Coltrane was a massive influence on Iggy Pop and The Stooges.
"L.A Blues" was The Stooges' ode to him. Ig plays Trane on a regular basis on his radio
show. He also cited "A Love Supreme" as one of his all-time favourite albums.
Sun Ra is another favourite of Ig.
A Love Supreme is a National treasure..
Giant steps
National yes. Global too
Coltrane is one of my favorite things ;]
Could u imagine someone talking about your work like this
Yeah, it's nice, but honestly I wish he'd be a bit more specific. Trane had a lot of phases: modal, hard bop, the quartet, free... A lot of folks don't know the free jazz stuff, and that really does take some explaining. I don't disagree with a word, however...
A Love Supreme is a message from GOD thru John’s most perfect talent.
Its very cool that Henry likes hard core, punk, hard rock, heavy metal, and also jazz. Not many people are that open minded.
And it is the ONLY way to be when it comes to music. Anyone who doesn't have an open mind & tries many different styles of music simply do not know what they are missing.....
@@jeffthrow6892For the last year or two I've been trying to expand my musical taste and trying to get rid of preconceptions towards certain bands and genres has been quite a hassle. I really admire people who have Rollins open mindedness.
I think listening to a very wide range of music is very important both as a music lover and particularly as a musician. Why consume only one flavor of music? There is no reason you can’t like Willie Nelson, Enslaved, John Coltrane AND Minor Threat. In fact, you should!
The opening notes of Acknowledgement is what a sunrise would sound like
Seriously though Art Blakely in his song Moanin is a masterpiece!
Yes indeed
Charles Mingus' Moanin' is better.
You know what everyone needs to hear that song!! Everything about it even all the Solos are amazing
I can listen to him talk about records forever give Henry a podcast!
I'll never play A Love Supreme: I'm listening to Coltrane's albums in chronological order, one at a time and go to the next album when I'm bored of the current one. Have been playing Giant Steps repeatedly for 25 years now, not sure I'm gonna make it to 1961, let alone 1965.
A Love Supreme makes Giant Steps sound like christmas carols
Fuck dude, your missing out
Lmfao
Good luck haha
TBH I own and have played most Coltrane records but I still play Giant Steps more than the rest, I guess because it's easier to learn and sing the choruses.
Discovered my love for jazz music in 2016 via Miles Davis kind of Blue. John Coltrane Love supreme followed that immediately. What a way to begin! Next was Thelonious Monk straight no chaser and the list continues to grow.
life is divided into two stages, before listening to Love Supreme and after. Only after man knows what music can be. Touch of God.
This and Blue Train are gems
and Giant Steps
I so agree. A Love Supreme was the first Coltrane I had heard. But Blue Train was the first I have ever bought. It's stunning & flawless. And what a band on there!
New Thing at Newport, Archie Shepp / John Coltrane
Respect Henry Rollins
Amazing album.
I am not into vinyls but after listen this guy that i dont know who he is i must buy a turntable right now
Henry Rollins is interesting to listen to. He will talk his head off about almost anything he owns in his record collection lol
I love all kinds of music but can’t get into John Coltrane.
Blue train and miles Davis': kind of blue are just absolutely superb in every respect.
He is on point.
I've been listening to Coltrane a lot lately.
Amazing. Well said, Henry!
Amen! ❤
You have Blue Trane and Kinda Blue, both of which are Masterpieces. When Coltrane left his band, Miles wept like a baby..
Henry, Do you like huey Lewis and the news?
"In 1981, I quit my job at Hagen Daas, moved to San Francisco and began roadie-ing for one Huey Lewis and his band, the News. It changed my life."
I was thinking the same thing
Calm down Bateman
@@michaelcolello2735 I thought he quit his job at Hagen Daas to join Black Flag
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sport came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.
Coltrane changed my life
Trane was sent from God. He truly blessed humanity with his genius.
Jeez I love this guy......
he didn't say a wrong word there. typically what henry likes i also dig. a man with exquisite taste for sure.
Word
Ascension! For life
Life advice from Mr. Rollins: John Coltrane.
Preach
Amen, 🙏
Amen.
I feel that Mozart was also connected like this. The Love Supreme album blew me away the first time I heard it.
Same with me to
Henery- GOT TO CHECK OUT "LUSH LIFE"- FORGET ABOUT IT.
Well, he's not wrong.
I have tried to like blues, jazz, and classical and I have failed miserably. Why do I keep trying, mostly because I love hifi audio and they use so many blues, jazz and classical music to showoff new speakers at the audio shows.
Listen to what you like and it's ok. But leaving the door open is also great. And when you're ready, swing it open.
That Coltrane stuff from the early 60's was fantastic . I want These Are a Few of My Favorite Things played at my funeral . Not a great fan of this record that Henry is talking about , though . Coltrane has done so much better .....
A Love Supreme is the best Coltrane album by its unique crafting and genius usage of the album format. Of course you have the right not to like it, but objectively it's his best
What would he do if you were at his house, Coltrane be playing and you said that record is trash????
Rollins seems like a pretty level-headed guy and knows that people have different opinions, so he would probably ask you if you're serious, and if you say yes, ask for specific reasons, you give him your reasons, and he either respects your opinion and agrees to disagree, or thinks your reasons don't hold any merit and counters with HIS reasons why you should love it. By the time he is done talking, you will probably not only be a fan of the album but of Coltrane's entire discography.
I doubt any record is going to sound like trash on his $250,000 sound system. The fidelity on those brings audiophiles to tears.
If you can't find a copy of Blue Train by John Coltrane, the Thomas The Tank Engine theme will have to suffice.
I feel the same way about Tom Waits that Rollins feels about John Coltrane.
Even the house where nobody lives should come with the record of The House Where Nobody Lives ;)
So, what Hank's saying is nothing runs like a 'Trane.
I'll see myself out.
Isn't that Jordan Peterson?
I thought John Coltrane said he forced a lot of ideas to get them in his ears on the bandstand? That's kind of the opposite of what Rollins said but I personally respect it.
He said that he had a lot of ideas in his head that he wanted to get out at the same time, so it would sound angry or chaotic
@@darienmoncree3980 ahh that's got to be a later interview. Never heard that makes sense.
Put it this way: it is not Coltrane's finest record.
I like Africa Brass with Eric Dolphy. Dolphy was a genius as well. Out To Lunch is one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time.
@@UMAMIMAMU But maybe it is just that is unfair to name a Coltrane's recording his finest.
Oh geez.. lol..Anyhoo, as always, it's all about subjectivity my friend. Take care..
@@trickydick6152 its called having an opinion - why are you so upset about it?
@@ElectroIsMyReligion Why are you upset about MY opinion?
I dig Coltrane but this gushing over him is soooooo lame.
Everyone raves about this record it seems. No offence to the many who like it, but I just never got it. I'm open minded, but I can't stand more than a minute or two and I have to turn it off as it really irritates me and sets my nerves on edge. Can I be the only person with this reaction?
It's ok if you don't like it. But you do have to ask what is it that you don't like about it. Are you not a fan of the instrument, the saxophone? The melody? The rhythm? There must be some elements that irritate you. Try to identify them and wonder why? For example, if the sax is replaced with a flute then it would be unlistenable for me.
Coltrane's tone in his later years did sound harder and harsher whereas his earlier playing has smoothness in that silvery tone. So, yes, you're not the only one who feels unnerved by it. I like edgy sound so I'm a masochist.
I like most of the artists and records which he digs, but I CANNOT STAND the way in which this guy talks about things!
Om was terrible
Why anyone would listen to the recommendations of a nobody would be a mystery.
That nobody has probably had a more positive effect on more people than any ten people you can name. Trolls who think denying the validity of a legend will somehow make them one always crack me up.
He’s hardly a nobody.
Is this the human equivalent of 'If a tree falls in forest and no-one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?'. Do you believe that someone you've never heard of must be a nobody?
Lame................choice. "Ascension" or "Meditations".
Coltrane was a hack. HACK!
As Beefheart once said: "If you got ears, you gotta listen!".
Youre statement could not be more false.
Butt still have a good day.

Then go listen to something else from his extensive catalog. Or go listen to something entirely different. And it's ok.
His white guilt shaming him into being convinced that atonal sax squealing played by a junkie is good music.
It says a lot about you that you think _he's_ suffering from "white guilt" by listening to and enjoying Jazz.
Coltrane quit junk in 1958. Get your facts straight.
I think he quit the day he died.
Does it hurt your Knuckles when they drag at your sides?
@@robjones2408 it might habe even been 57' cause coltrane had a Tutelege under Thelonius monk in 57- an The monk was not into junk!
