  • Derren explores the power of placebo by setting up a fake pharmaceutical company that claims to have developed a drug named 'Rumyodin' which has the ability to inhibit fear. Then, Derren Brown looks at the psychology of religious belief, performs a satanic rite, and attempts to give an atheist a religious conversion.

Thank you ever so much, Derren! This was an amazing experience for me, so I don't even care that I know Nick as an actor from somewhere, and have liked his face ever since. So what the staged scene was an unbelievable as Katie's claim she doesn't even dare sing alone at home!? It's a proven fact placebo's work even if you know from the start that that is what you are taking.
Interestingly, a bit later, Natalie said something like that.

As a pharmacist, I discourage Drs from relying on the placebo effect to treat clinical issues, such as depression-induced insomnia (using mildly sedating antihistamines). The effect is unreliable, has inconsistent results and causes mistrust.
Lack of effective treatment can be crippling. E.g lack of sleep can cause extreme risk taking, suicide attempts or hallucinations.
Far more damaging than a week of Zopiclone or Temazepam.
Is there ever a time a placebo is the most appropriate option over a clinically viable drug?
    I strongly think not!

  • @Meladjusted
    @Meladjusted Před 10 měsíci +5

Felt bad for Natalie in the Faith episode... Letting her come out in front of the audience ·before· she'd even been told that he'd elicited that experience in her? You could tell she had experienced something that was genuinely meaningful and amazing for her and it was ridiculous for them to believe that wrapping that up by letting her know-in front of an audience-that it was just something he psychologically elicited from her-oh, BUT "the emotions were real" 🙄-would be sufficient.
Derren is almost always very ethically and morally minded. He brings things to the edge, but typically knows where that edge IS and, importantly, how to wrap a situation up so that there's nothing actually taken away from the person and no real embarrassment. So, a rare miss (but also a lot at stake...).
    Hope she's doing well.

    • @tobywan08
      @tobywan08 Před 8 měsíci +1

I think in a way that was kind of the point. She needed that final experience to be powerfully sobering enough to prevent her for forming a miss guided religious belief.

    • @RainbowYak
      @RainbowYak Před 5 měsíci

I completely disagree. In my opinion, the de-briefing was extremely important. I'm myself an atheist who has (unfortunately, I must say) made rather powerful, religious experiences. In my case, the experiences were elicited by an anti-depressant which I have been taking for a long time. Especially during the first 2-3 years of taking it, I experienced a ton of crazy hallucinations, both visual and auditory. Nowadays, I know this is a side-effect of the drug but my psychiatrist forgot to inform me about it when he wrote the prescription. I had never experienced any hallucinations before this in my life and so the experience was stunning but at times also very scary. One time I had a similar experience as the one Natalie had in the church. I was lying in my bed, looking up at the ceiling, when suddenly the ceiling parted and a really bright, warm light shone down on me. I heard a voice repeatedly call my name and I felt a sensation of being pulled upwards. In the moment, it felt great but then the ceiling closed up again and I felt as though I had been shut out. After this experience, I was really confused and I began to think about all the big, philosophical questions. I'm a lifelong atheist but suddenly, I was not so sure anymore. But if the Christian God is actually real, this means all the other things in the Bible are real, too. So, Hell is also a real place. The more I thought about this, the more scared I became. I would still call myself an atheist but due to the experiences I've had, I'm not so sure anymore what I should think about the afterlife. Even though I now know they were drug-induced hallucinations, I've developed a crippling fear of going to Hell after my death. To me, this is proof of how toxic religious belief can be. I wish I hadn't had my experiences and I'm glad Derren put Natalie's experience in a rational context for her so she doesn't end up suffering from it.

Her experience was real, that was the hole point. Religious experience is real, attributing them to the supernatural is where the error comes in. Does this demonstrate that god is not real? No it does not, it does demonstrate that god is unnecessary for religious experiences. Napoleon Bonaparte and the French physicist Pierre-Simon Laplace are talking about solar system, when Napoleon asked about the role of God in his mathematical model of the universe, Laplace replies that he has no need for that hypothesis.

"I hope to prove that even atheists have a hard wired capacity to believe." (1:11:22). This was such an interesting thing for Derren to say, especially considering he is himself an atheist. It suggests that there is a 'hard wired' component to the belief in a divine connection to something greater than being Human; that life has a meaning and is purposeful. I wonder when/where/how and by what means, this 'hard wire' was installed into the human psyche; even those atheist psyche's. Is it perhaps hard wired into our DNA? which fundamentally would suggest a Creation Template. Who or what would design such a template? I wonder if Derren actually realised what he stated, and if there is a recognition that even within himself, there is a 'hard wired ... IDEA' regarding this most profound question; the question of the meaning of life. We can do it ... without 'religious belief,' but it means leaving 'religion' behind and not falling into the opposite swing of the pendulum ... atheism; that there is nothing more to life than the 'idea' of there being nothing more to life; and so it is. He's right that 'ideas are contagious', but a hard wire ... tha's not just an idea; it's a hard wire.
    Edit:
Some further thoughts on Natalie's experience. It seems to me that the 'psychological techniques' used by Derren, as much as they may have proved the power of suggestion (a very real thing), it may also be as likely that without even 'Derren' himself realising what he was doing, the techniques he used simply 'unlocked' the barrier of conditioning, existing at an unconscious level within Natalie. Conditioning from early formative years, reinforced through education and professional affiliation. Perhaps also, the 'power of suggestion' of her own father, reinforced through education or professional theoretical research regarding 'stem cells,' (a collective agreement to think in a certain way, in order to belong within the chosen group identity; an agreed a belief that there is no God), and it's as likely that Derren's use of the techniques simply reconnected her to the 'hard wires' in her own template (or DNA). Perhaps there are other perspectives and ways to perceive what happened for Natalie and why, that allows us to go beyond the glass ceiling effect, of the power of suggestion alone.
Despite the identification with atheism, Natalie was 'open' to having an experience of something outside of her known world. Her life brought her to the experience of meeting Derren and his show; that something extraordinary may happen in her life. I'm just supposing this is so, from what Natalie said in their early conversation in the church setting, and of course, this made the work easy. Ultimately it was a therapeutic intervention and who's to say not a design written in to the life template, of Natalie.

Placebos actually increases some people improvement because of their belief. A placebo group is always implemented in double blind studies of the testing of new medications.
If someone’s belief in a higher power is the only thing to get them to overcomes a drug or alcohol addiction then why try to take that from someone. There a reason it is implemented as part of a 12 step recovery program.
Real or not the upside of religious beliefs is that it adds meaning and gives comfort to individuals.

Yes. Placebo only works if you don't know how it works. However, that only works for what is in this video. If you trust me too much, and I gave you a red pill that says this removes your fear of spider, and you believed me, that red pill will work as long as I don't tell you that it's a placebo.
So, even if you know the process, if it's a different pill/medicine and you don't know that it's a placebo, it would still work.

The second part of this film was very interesting. I am not a Christian and I don't believe in God. I'm not sure what I believe in, if anything. I'm not sure I'm an athiest either. I do believe in the possibility of a soul leaving a body when it dies and existing outside the body. Part of that is based in science, strangely.
Scientists are questioning what exactly is the "mind" (which is basically a person's personality when we think about it) and where does it exist? Does it only exist inside the brain, or does it exist externally to the brain? Given the brain is a bunch of electric impulses, and as electricity in general isn't always confined to being "inside" things perhaps that applies to the mind as well. Perhaps it exists hovering outside the brain somewhere. This is an idea that scientists have brought forward. If that is true, then maybe it's possible that when the brain dies, that "mind" can become a separate entity and continue existence somehow. Where does it get the electric impulses to carry on is the big question of course. However, assuming that somehow it does, this is perhaps what we refer to as the soul.
If that is true then, that opens the possibility to personalities being able to survive death and ergo, maybe some people have developed an ability to interact with those personalities. Perhaps in that case, the idea of mediums "speaking to the dead" isn't such a crazy idea after all? Perhaps there are individuals whose brainwaves can actually pick up on these external personalites and communicate with them. There have been scientific experiments on people who claim to be mediums and it's been found that their brain waves are different to other people's. The same apparently is seen in that of people who claim to be spiritual healers.

This. From an online blog. “Derren asks… “Can our experience of religion be explained by psychology alone?" And he expects the answer yes.
Well of course the answer is yes, Derren! Of course "our experience of religion" can be explained by psychology! Even psychology alone. My experience of falling in love with my wife could be explained in entirely psychological terms. I'm sure there'd be insights - certain needs from my childhood met in 'some sort of spouse figure', yes, yes. All useful, all true. And, I suppose, such psychology might - at another level of explanation - be put down to biology, and biology reduced to chemistry and chemistry explained by physics... or something. I'd be genuinely interested in all such analyses. But...
the further we "progress" into those materialistic explanations, the less satisfying they are as an account of what is, irreducibly, a personal experience.
    And, crucially....
the claim that, because there might be a perfectly satisfying psychological explanation, ** my wife doesn't exist** needs unmasking as the rank idiocy that it is.”

First episode inspirational. Second one diappointing as now question believe in supernatural. Also, that death is not the end, though do not believe in a patriarchal God. We are energy as well as matter & have the concept of a soul.
Is there anything science & psychology cannot explain? A mystery. I hope so. Eckhart Tolle claims this is consciousness, that we are insperable from this vast universe & spaciousness, but ego gets in the way, so we have lost touch with a deeper inner sacred dimension
Evil is therefore committed on the name of religion.
He does not use the term God. I wonder what Derren's response would be to such current philosophy ? Derren espouses stoicism. Is this not just another form of suggestion & belief to live by to give meaning and make sense of what is often a chaotic, cruel & crazy world. I am amazed that humans with such incredible intelligence never learn from history so still we go on killing each other and harming this precious planet & animals we share it with. No wonder some people need to believe in something greater & beyond.

I am he that prepared light, and formed darkness; who make peace, and create evil; I am the Lord God, that does all these things.
      God is the architect behind E V E R Y T H I N G but his followers claim ignorance whenever bad things happen.
Something good happens? God did it.
Something bad happens? Oh, gee whizz, that must be an unexplainable mystery.
You believe that god is good and makes good things happen, is behind everything that exists, but somehow he just can't figure out how evil and suffering came about, because apparently it wasn't he who was behind that. It just sort of happened on its own, except that can't be, so you just dismiss it and ignore it and make apologies on God's behalf.
He wants us all to find him and worship him, but he makes sure to remain unseen and unheard, but don't you worry, because he inspired some guys in the Middle East to write down a complete mess of a book that is so full of contradictions and errors that from it there sprung thousands of religions that claim to understand the bible and its messages, but all of them need your money to function.
What a load of absolute nonsense!! It makes me so furious to see grown ass people believe in a god, but none of them have any clue as to who or what this god is or does BECAUSE HE IS COMPLETELY INCONSISTENT in what he preaches!
"Murder is wrong (except for when I command it)"
"Slavery is fine as long as you don't kill them when you beat them. You may r@pe your slaves so that you will get slave children who are your property. Don't enslave your own people, but everyone else is fair game."
"Make sure to murder your enemies, but keep the women as sex-slaves."
"You are all sinners because I was stupid enough to place the forbidden thing IN PLAIN SIGHT along with a talking snake that lures people into doing the thing I adviced against, and even though I designed everything I am not to blame for it not working properly. That is YOUR fault and your children's fault and your grandchildren and you grand-grandchildren and so on because... well because I say so, and therefore I shall r@pe a woman and impregnate her and then I will have you murder my son so that I can forgive you for the original sin that I was the cause of.. because REASONS!"

With Derry’s ‘belief’ experiments I believe he has personal bias that excludes him from a true investigation.
I am no religious fanatic, but I do understand the understanding of “internal divinity” that separates man from beast.
You can turn to the animal or the spiritual and yet I challenge every atheist I have even encountered a single challenge….to sell me their soul.
And yet not a single one over twenty years has actually agreed to go along with the ceremony. I get insults and accusations despite it being a simple ceremony that they profit from with a single silver coin.
My understanding, in many ways like Derren’s, is that there is still some innate fear of commuting one’s eternal soul to a paper contract and that is even despite the offer for them to buy back their contract at any future point.
Well Derren - you clever man - I offer the same challenge. Sell me your eternal soul, take the hand made silver coin and prove me a fool for whether I believe or not I surely am.
And yes I will get bravado and anger I. The responses, but after twenty years I doubt I will find someone actually brave (or dumb) enough to go through with it.

I want to invite you and anyone else to enter my basement alone and let me do an experiment on you to prove that aliens exist. If no one participates, that must mean that aliens exist. See how stupid that sounds?

Very interesting experiment regarding the religious experience, however, if you truly understand who God really is, you learn that God isn't about "religion" at all, which is simply the act of doing the same thing over and over "religiously". God is about a relationship with the Creator; its a "knowing" beyond what man can suggest or generate. My relationship with my Heavenly Father was not given to me by man and cannot be manipulated or removed by man.
