    FYI: ‘Jane’ reblooms in midsummer. Mine always put out a decent flush of those purple-pink flowers in July.

    My 'Jane' is a super fast grower! I've had it for about 6-7 years and it's already at least 15 feet tall. It absolutely loves my heavy clay soil. Did you know magnolia flowers are edible?

    I don’t see Jane Magnolias very often in TN. I love them. I hope to have one next year. We chose panicle hydrangeas this year. We are making a border in the back yard and hopefully the Jane magnolia will go in between the white panicle hydrangeas.

    The 'Little Girl' series magnolias are also very easy to air layer if you are wanting more. I've been able to propagate more from both my Ann magnolia and my Jane this way. They are great for smaller yards and very easy to maintain. Great plant to showcase, Jim.

    I have a Jane magnolia that I purchased from Lowe's maybe 16 years ago. It's now about 13 feet tall and it does produce a second smaller flush of blooms in the early summer. It's a beautiful magnolia that is worth having in your yard. I'm in Kentucky in zone 6B.

    Jane magnolias are hardy here in zone 5B but not many people have them for some reason. I love mine because of its beauty but also because it shares its name with my childhood friend, Jane, who died of cancer, far too young.❤😢

      I love planting remembrance trees. My sister's name is Jane. She's still here, but I'm considering planting one in my grandmother's memory garden. Or a witch hazel. My grandmother and my late sister (Marcia) always wanted to be witches (back when "Bewitched" first aired). 😊

    I have 3 Jane magnolias and 1 Ann magnolia, which is slightly smaller than Jane and has darker pink flowers. I love these magnolias! However, I made a mistake and planted my front Jane too close to my front porch. So I'm having to prune it more than I wanted. You are right that Jane is best along a property line. Jane grows well and is gorgeous in Virginia Zone 7a, but gets zapped by a late frost every other year or so.

    I have a deciduous magnolia outside my kitchen window. I have no idea what type. Pretty tall and already done blooming. It had one of its best years this year. I remember getting some trees removed when we first moved here and one of the guys asked if we wanted it removed. I had no idea what it was at the time but I said no simply because I wanted the privacy out the window. I believe he called it a trash tree. Glad I ignored him!

      @KellerLatina don't panic because the leaves might turn brown, crispy and fall off. It's just stress. I nursed mine in its pot in a not-too-sunny place all summer and planted it out in early fall. It's got many swollen buds. I can't WAIT to see open! If you get one... expect shipping stress, but it makes a STRONG comeback.

    I'm still deciding between this and a witch hazel (one of the non-yellow types) to replace a leaning thornless Hawthorn that's damaged.

    I prefer an evergreen magnolia that has flowers over a long period like Magnolia figo “Hagiwara Everblooming.” The large leaves of a deciduous magnolia need to be raked as they fall or they end up all over your neighborhood.

    Just bought the “Susan” Magnolia. I will need to move it or raise it. Didn’t realize where I put it gets too wet. It’s only been in the ground two months. I’m hoping to raise it up a bit but I like the location. Will it be ok in very wet weather for another few weeks until I can raise it up? The forecast doesn’t look good for a week or more.

    Hi Jim, I'm truly a novice gardener, I just completed a master gardener certification course. That said, I not sure if my Magnolia is a Jane, but certainly looks like the one you have in this video but has to be over 20 years old and I had it pruned only on the outer branches over the past years. Now that I have some training I noticed many large internal branches that have been rubbing to the point the rubbed away some of the outer bark and internal wood of the branches getting rubbed. The shrub or tree still flowers every year including those branches up high. Should I still remove them to the ground or shorten them to the point where they no longer rub?, Thanks for any advise!

    • @SandraSElam
      @SandraSElam Před 14 dny

      Shorten them so they don't rub. Or if you have more than 5 main trunks, you can also cut the worst-looking rubbing branch to the ground.

    • @SandraSElam
      @SandraSElam Před 14 dny +1

      Since Jane gets 15 to 20 feet tall, it won't work in a container. Ann Magnolia gets 8 to 10 feet tall and looks very similar, so you could try it in a very, very large container.
