Van Aert is a follower, barely attacks. That's why he doesn't win monuments.
But why should he attack. He has one of the best sprints in the world. Attacking cost a lot of energy the chances of winning for WVA is probably higher if he just waits for the sprints.
I think it's a fair criticism this year cause he has followed a lot, but I think if you don't have the power to attack (and he didn't cause every attack from another rider he was distanced) then all you can do is follow. I think van Aert came really close this year, but there were 2 better, the 2 best cyclists on the planet.

MvdP kann Eintagesrennen gewinnen auf die er sich akribisch vorbereitet……Auf den großen Rundfahrten sieht man nicht viel von ihm…..WVA ist erstens ein Teamplayer und zweitens ein Allrounder wie man ihn nur selten findet! Auch wenn er sich oft mit dem zweiten Platz zufrieden geben muss, was der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass er immer vorne mitmischt, ist er für mich in Summe der beste Fahrer der Welt zusammen mit Tadej Pogacar.
wva bereitet sich auch sicher akribisch auf die eintagesrennen vor^^ außerdem hat mvdp sehr guten leadout für philipsen gemacht der immerhin das grüne trikot und ne handvoll etappen gewinnen konnte (ziemlich gute tour für alpecin würde ich mal sagen auch wenn mvdp persönlich keinen sieg einfahren konnte war es als team so ungefähr das maximum). und mvdp hat einfach mal von den 4 wichtigen rennen für ihn 3 gewonnen und einmal 2. hinter halbgott tadej. bei wva hat man das gefühl ihm fehlt ein bisschen das letzte prozent um in so einem rennen tadej oder mathieu zu schlagen, klar hat er oft pech (letztes beispiel roubaix) aber dass er gerade mal ein einziges monument gewonnen hat, ist einfach viel zu wenig für einen top-tier klassikerfahrer wie ihn. tadej ist sicher speziell aber er hat schon 5 oder so und ist für mich in einer eigenen liga.
