- Austinites are fighting to keep this historic municipal course open and accessible to all. Erik Anders Lang and University of Texas alumnus/legend Ben Crenshaw wrap up Season 5 of Adventures in Golf, presented by United Airlines.
Lions Municipal has been a longstanding fixture in Austin, Texas, and recognized as the first desegregated golf course south of the Mason-Dixon back in the 1950s. The land the course occupies is owned by the University of Texas, and the lease is up, putting Lions' fate in jeopardy.
Erik visits the course and the town to speak with locals about the course's overall impact, including two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, who designed the course and co-created a non-profit aimed to raise enough money to buy the course from UT.
Will Lions be saved? We're all hopeful for a future of affordable, accessible golf, but only time will tell. If you'd like to get involved, visit savemuny.com to donate.

Muni golf courses are the best thing to happen to golf. Support your local muni.
sad reality is that my muni course is way too expensive compared to the little private courses that serve the muni function
Erik,
Boca Municipal golf course is one of my favorite and affordable courses in Boca Raton. GL Homes has been trying to buy the property and shut it down for the last 4 years. I think it would be a great story to bring awareness to if you have time.
Huge fan btw
UT top golfers need to step up and put the pressure on the University to do the right thing and keep the course. The land was not donated to UT to sell and build more houses.
That’s where I learned to golf and where I later taught many kids to golf. I even played there this morning. Please #savemuny
I started playing at Muny in September, and now I play there 2-4 times a week. I don’t know what I would do without it. This video perfectly captures what this course is about, and in almost certain the Save Muny efforts will skyrocket as a result. Great video!
Grew up playing this course as a young boy, one of my favorite golf memories came on this course when I got my first hole in one. It would be very sad to see it go.
Very sad! - Love from CT where real estate is hot cake.
Great piece. As an Austinite, this is one of the most straightforward explanations of the issues surrounding the course. Good update on current negotiations. Save Muny!
University of Texas had $85 billion worth of assets on their balance sheet in 2019, and they are fighting about getting fair value for an asset worth $100 million. It's sad that the school can't see how much this course means to the community and can't view it as more than just an investment that needs a fair return.
And didn’t bat an eye about dropping $50 million to fire a football coach because his record was only kinda good.
Universities are a business. They're not in it for anything other than money.
And who doesn’t love Ben Crenshaw?
Adventures in Golf! I click these videos as fast as possible. Always a good day when a new episode comes out.
I learned and fell in love with the game at Lions like so many others. It chokes me up to see Mr. Crenshaw wearing a Save Muny hat at Augusta National on TV all these years later in 2023 still fighting for this course that means so much to so many. I don't live in Austin any more but I hope to be able to spend much more time there in the future. But theres only one way that can happen... Save Muny

As a 20 year old UT student, Lions provides a short getaway to de stress and just have fun, while not paying a fortune to play the game I love. It is so important the city keeps this course!!
Your way with words makes all the difference. You’re a storyteller, and do amazingly as such. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos.
Erik, I dm'd you to come and do a show on Lions 2 years ago....about time you came!😜
This Golf Course is my first love , Over ten year ago we were still battling for Muni when I was in college and the fight continues . Save Muni ! Love the content and this one hit home spread the vibe MY GUY !
The municipal golf course where I first played 18 holes closed a few years back, it was a great shame and a great loss to the local community in Beckenham south east London UK . A low priced course for youngsters to start and maybe fall in love with the game of golf and play with like minded young people is and will be a great education, Let's hope the University is also open to Learning (Sic). Good luck Everyone in your Continued fight for Muny , Life and it's experiences are so much more than just money.
I hope UT does the right thing and allows for Lion's to continue the legacy of Austin's spectacular landmark course.
Every Californian ever “lets move to texas”
Keep that liberal BS in California
Dont California my Texas
Muny is such a historic course, I cannot imagine it going away. I have so many memories of that course from playing there in high school. #savemuny
I grew up playing this course! Love Lions. Lions is a great, affordable, fun course in Austin.
A story that needs to be told, and done to perfection. The elegant tone with nothing extraneous. The grace of BC. Not long ago such a piece would have taken a year and full blown production. The skills & talents of Erik Anders Lang & Co. to pull this off is breathtaking. Bravo!
One of the courses I grew up playing. Endless memories. Really hope they keep it alive
Thanks for telling stories like these. I’m amazed by the community around this gem of a course. Can’t wait to go back to Austin and play a round at the muny.
Love that you guys are bringing awareness to the golf world where it’s needed, love this account, keep up the great work guys
What a great story! Never played in Austin but gave a donation after watching the video. Great job Erik and your team for shinning light on this story.
Oh man. 🥺
There’s no way this beautiful place survives.
Great content as usual EAL. We're glad to have you in Texas!
Thanks for this episode, watching from Limoges France. 👍
I love this idea to save the courses. I have played there before and absolutely cherished the memory. I also would like to add that that ending hit different
I played there a lot when I lived in Austin in the early aughts. Had tons of fun there with my buddies.
Me and a few buddies played there went we traveled to Austin a few years ago for my friends 21st. great course for everyone to play!
I visited the Austin area a few weeks ago and played this course. It’s a unique course that was a thrill to play. I hope to play there next time I visit.
Great video, unfortunately many cities have a similar story.
.
yeeeeeees! i play this course every week, im so glad you played!
Great video Eric this is what you do best enlightening the world to great golf stories - hope this one has a happy ending!
Round of applause for noel bridges. Understands what the game is to people and doesnt even play👏👏👏
UT representative seems like a great guy...
Lions was the first full golf course I ever played. I was shaking over my first putt as two older gentlemen watched and after 4 or 5 rolls, the one finally went in... but not before running over the pencil that fell out of my hat during the stroke. Save muni.
I grew up playing here and I attribute my love of golf to muny, I hope so see Erik around there sometime
I don't understand how come people aren't talking about mr. Brackenridge statement when he gave to the university so many years ago that wonderful land that that land was not to be sold. He didn't have children that's why he gave it to the university.
Great video. Well done for drawing attention to this. Build communities
Having endured the loss of a course to land development as the resident pro I can tell you the loss to the community will never heal. Ever.
To this day, 7 years later, people will stop me and lament and even still cry.
Do everything in your power save your golf course.
You are an example of golf's social evolution. Keep going 🙌
Amazing golf course got to play their once
Never played this course but its sad to possibly see municipal courses continue to close and make us golfers to play higher prices coursers we cant afford to play. I hope Lions Municipal stays open and isn't closed for good. Dont let the big businessman take over golf courses like they have and turned them into other things. We shall see what the future holds for this course. Best of everything to Lions Municipal Golf Course. Happy golfing all!
Such a shame to see this battle i live on the Gold Coast Queensland Australia not a huge place population maybe 650,000 and a popular destination for overseas tourists but we have 35 golf courses available for anyone to play ranging from public courses to membership courses and no dramas with local councils hope you guys dig in and let this course stay open great video Eric :)
Great video, I hope they keep renewing the lease
2 weeks out from an epic Bandon trip to play his courses. 🔥🔥🔥
Excited for you, have fun!
So glad to see EAL in Austin and giving our municipal courses a shoutout, you should check out Hancock. Hook 'em horns
Just don’t hit a car!
@@justgettinby8260 hahah no one needs to know
I'm from Boston and I want to save this course and social environment. It seems like such a great place for kids to grow into the game and I'm sure at a great price, or no price for some. It's also a great looking area and does not need another 100 acre lot of houses put up.
This same thing happened recently in Atlanta. The historic Bobby Jones municipal golf course-the city’s first 18 hole tract-was razed in favor of a 9 hole facility built to accommodate tourism and the convention business. Atlanta was losing too many conventions to other locales because the “Powers-To-Be” deemed the old 18 hole course unattractive and out dated. Where once an 18 hole greens fee was a nominal $25, it’s now $65, and range balls are $16. It all comes down to $$ n’est pas. Too bad . . . .
I loved playing that old course. Plus I can say I played a course Bobby Jones played. I haven't played the new course yet but heard it's nice and fun.
Absolute city gem with kids, families, dogs all getting out in nature. Great job UT, putting pressure to put all our kids behind a phone! Don't do this to our kids.
Again, well done
Love this course!
Great video Erik!!!
university of Texas owns the land. Means no expense! Clearly they want it to be highly profitable and real estate market is super hot! UT is playing devils game in saints cloths, I wonder what city muny offers suggested table!! While in the back room Tesla probably offered brink full of money for solar panels with condo. 110 acre of Tesla city.. it’s hard for anyone to look way from a pile of money 💰 vs green space.
EAL, are you quoting “Orthodoxy” at the end? Spectacular writing by G.K. Chesterton. Also, as a someone who used to live in Austin and went to UT but has not played Muni yet, it’s on my ASAP to-do list.
I love all the Munis in Austin. Played this course often but still love Mo Willy too
Mo Willy is a much better golf course than Lions.
Good luck Muni!
#SAVEMUNI !!!!
My home course in the UK is a muni, the local council own it and its a fantastic course. The late Peter Allis designed the back 9.
But the council don't invest money into it and there's talk of them selling the back 9 for housing 😭
Welcome to Texas!
My favorite local course is closing at the end of this year :( it used to be 18 holes, then a neighborhood got built on 9 of the holes, now you play the 9 holes twice, a couple holes have completely different tee boxes tho turning Par 5 into Par 4 and a par 4 into a Par 5. It was supposed to close in September of this year to build the rest of neighborhood. but now it's extended until November. People have started petitions to try and save the course but I doubt itll help. Ugh I hope it doesnt close. Such a nice quiet course
Save the course! Who doesn’t love golf? There’s gotta be some wealthy people in Austin that can save it.
Let's hope they change their minds and save the course!!
I'd love to give private golf lessons to Miss Bridges. 😍😍😍
Lions was one of the first courses I played. Hope it gets saved.
That older man is the definition of Texas.
Erik has to be one of the most likeable guys on CZcams
A&M would never even think about doing that.
That attorney should be played by Tommy Lee Jones in the movie
The lawyer for UT would be played by Ron White
Save Muny!
Save muni!!!
If Muny is shutdown, I swear to God that every single textbook in the UT Library is going to have the F-word on it. The F-word.
You have 1 day lol
I love austin
That track is a historic gem. UT should just donate that land to the city of Austin and be done with it.
Build dorms or houses around it ... if they must!
The University of Texas is one of the wealthiest academic institutions in the world. They don't need to make money off of this land that was donated to them. If Muny is redeveloped as anything other than a golf course it will seriously impact the way Austinites interact with and support UT.
Dang it josh! Lol
im looking for the episode where he plays on water , im battling to find it ... any hints?
We're about to have our Muni rezoned for housing and are only going to lose half the course and still have a space to play. I can't imagine losing a muni completely.
Yoooo I live a mile away from here
I wish I could putt half as well as Ben Crenshaw on his worst day
Who doesn’t love muni golf??
So is there a verdict yet
Who will play you in a movie? What a great question.
Should come to Brantford, Ontario, Canada when the weather gets nice. Check out our public course that’s over 100 years old that our moronic city is trying to sell to housing companies.
Give it a google. Arrowdale Public Golf Course.
Oldest 9 hole course in North America.
Hey Erik, I hope you understand the reasons Austin is great
The bad guy doesn’t get to choose who plays him in the movie!
Lions is on my list just for the statue. Keep Austin weird
How big is UT’s endowment again?
The University of Texas got 31 million dollars from the first round of CARES Act spending. Thanks so much for paying it back to the citizens who gave you that 31 mil.
This makes me thankful that I have 3 courses around me, that are public courses, not "private country clubs." The notion that I should pay a membership fee, then pay to play every round, is absurd! Not to mention, those "private" clubs, are often very snooty and not welcoming overall... Which is not going to help the game grow, in any way.
SUPPORT LOCAL GOLF
University of Texas has the second largest Endowment in the world at 31 billion dollars. Sounds like somebody might be greedy
I say James Brolin gets the casting
LMAO I went to the University of Idaho and there were so many golf courses. We had 2 city ones within 5 minutes (Pullman, WA and Moscow ID private but they had good prices), U of I and WSU each had a course, there was 2 private driving ranges, and Lewiston, ID / Clarkston, WA had I think 5 or 6 courses. Plus if you registered as a Lewis Clark SC student you got to play one of them for free so we all applied (obviously get accepted) and then drop out the day you go get a student ID that's good for 4 years).
UT’s endowment is worth 30 billion dollars.... just want to put that out there
Checkmate...all ya had to do was mention first desegregated course.
UT has billions. If they take a hard line on this one they should be ashamed.
