    In this video I am tearing open a smoking drill, trying to figure out what went wrong. Is it fixable? Well, probably not. I think I just overloaded it.

    There are drills with single gear reduction (typically 0-2500 RPM or more), and drills with two stage gear reduction (typically 0-1200 RPM or less). For low speed high torque applications, always use a lower speed drill. The higher speed drills don't have enough reduction, not enough torque, and running slow, not enough cooling.

      Thanks, That's good to know.
      I was hoping for a bit more of a dramatic reveal inside, but blackened windings were the only testament to my mistake... Maybe I should have taken it out back and doused it in black gunpowder and then turned it on! ;-)

      @@Wordsnwood I tried to break a 16mm nut with my Makita cordless hammer, it started smoking, I had to stop. That's the 4th or 5th time I've had her smoking over last 10 yrs. Still works fine gives me full power.

    Takes beaucoup amperes to mix concrete. Even to stir up drywall mud with a bigger paint paddle puts a real strain on a drill.

      It was only a small batch for levelling the garage floor... live and learn.

    You could at the very least keep the chuck, since they are easily exchangeable between drills.

      Yes, you can buy a cheaper drill with a lousy chuck and use that chuck.

    Makes sense I guess, the cement was too thick so the motor wasn't getting cooled enough and the copper burned up. Thanks for making this video, it has given me a better feel for how these little motors operate.

    At least one of the more inexpensive tools in the shop

    Enamel coating probably burned off the windings and made an internal short circuit - that would be why it still turned sort of freely but had no power.

    That was interesting to watch (no sarcasm intended).
    I burnt my drill from doing too many odds and ends, and somehow I got a full refund from the place I bought it.

    Better to burn a drill then getting sick LOL. Still i wooden tasted away, The problem could be only with the stator or the armature and not both. And yes they should came a part from one another, but the stator coiling expanded and trapped the armature. From what i so in the video the drill wasn´t in bad shape and deserved a second chance.
    P.S. : That´s what i do every day of the week. sheers.

    I was hoping you would make some kind of rig that would turn the drill until it burned down completely! Click bait thumbnail :(

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  Před 7 lety

      Well it wasn't turning any more, so I think the smoking bit was all it was going to produce. If I lived in the country maybe I could have tried something with explosives. Next time?
