When I first heard Congratulation I didn't really understand, I didn't really like it. Then after listening to it more and more I understood how good it was. It's a very good album, it has it's own style and the songs are all so refreshing.

Andrew has stated various times that this song is about over indulging in ecstasy or MDMA, which is crazy because when this album came out I was in the same confusing situation with the drug as depicted in the video.

For those who keep saying they are on drugs or they're not on drugs blah blah blah. You should actually check out their interviews from that era. One man who interviewed them had to this to say. "Perhaps predictably for a psych track, 'It's Working' is also about drugs. What's more curious, however, is that it's not about LSD. It's about all the ecstasy the boys regret gobbling up in the early throes of their success." Listen to the lyrics as well. "How will I know if it's working right?" As someone who has been in their shoes with ecstasy abuse this is very fitting. The visuals at the end also help this case with the fact that the machine swallows Andrew and Ben whole which is a pretty simple metaphor for addiction.

It SOUNDS like coming up on MDMA, the lyrics too, "it's working in your blood" "to the light, it's just like striking matches". I don't think the end of the video is about addiction but rather just come down.
This song's about how people say drugs free your mind and open you up to new things, but as you continue taking them, you become isolated from society and essentially put in a box

As an old dude that grew up in the 70s and 80s, I still love a lot of 21st cent. bands. MGMT is one I have liked for years. Just here to say this should not shock the young millennials, this song and many of their song have a retro-sound. This is very 60s psychedelic pop. When I hear songs like this, I can't help but think of early Pink Floyd (60s Syd Barrett days).
For some reason, i get a lot of beach boys vibes in this recording too.
according to Ben and Andrew, this song was inspired structure-wise by "See Emily Play"

such an underrated album... one of my all time favs. So many different styles of melodies and hooks mixed together. MGMT were like lets put out an album that is just fun, crazy and upbeat to listen to! with all sorts of different semi poppy melodies and strange eclectic lyrics that will drive our weird fanbase nuts ... You either LOVE or hate this album there is no grey area

So weird but I think they're great, love their sound even though each song is different, I'm a huge sucker for cinematography & visuals with anything plus I like something I can dance to. The fact that the main guy is really cute is just a bonus.
Their music and their videos are still working. One of my top 5 bands and I've been listening to rock music since early 70's.

I think I get it- Andrew and Ben built this world of fame and music. It had girls and ice cream and everything they wanted. It was beautiful. But then it got to be too much, and it started closing in on them. They got trapped, and taken by people they didn't even know. Great song, and great album!!

Everything about this song is good. The production is good, the lyrics and vocals are good, the riff and groove are good, and the video's amazing.

Jordan Cluer Hey. I'm soooo sorry I JUST saw your comment. So, I could be totally wrong about this, but here's what I think. I think that someone was conducting an experiment to see if people would do the right thing. (I'll explain later) So, these two guys find a mysterious box, and open it to find a manual for a machine, and they build it. I think the first metaphor is that you have to be careful with something you know little about or bad things could happen. (Drugs, people, etc.) They finally build it and are playing with it and seeing what it can do. But then, they see a girl walk by. She takes pictures in the photo booth and when they look at them, she winks. (She is part of the experiment.) Then Andrew feeds the pictures into the machine. Maybe because they think it will make her come back. (When Ben opens the curtain, only her feet are there and the rest is just a rainbow thing.) But this actually made her get stuck in the machine because she needed the pictures to get out. So a message appears reading "help" with a picture of the girl's face next to it. Ben sees it and at first tries to get her out, but then he gets distracted by the drummer and forgets about her. So they keep having fun with it (making ice cream, turning dials to make things happen on that thing with Matt playing guitar and running away from the cat and stuff) Then Andrew gives the little boy his ice cream which symbolizes that you can do good things with it if you really want to. Then it shows a dancer with clouds in the background which I think is the girl from the beginning who has come back as an angel. It shows her dancing on Will's shoulders which symbolizes that he will now have to live with the weight of that mistake on his shoulders. Then it cuts to Andrew inside the machine and it's closing in but he can't get out. Also, if you pause it at 2:54 you will see a pair of feet as if someone were above watching this happen but doing nothing to stop it. (The person/people who are conducting the experiment) Then he finds a hole in which he escapes and is now running through a dark place where the sound is muffled. Then a new girl comes out of it and is looking at herself like "What happened to me?" I think it is the girl from the beginning who died, became an angel, and is now back as a different girl. Then Andrew can't find Ben so he shows those people his pictures and they point to the right. Now this next part I think many people don't notice, but I think it's very important. From 3:22 - 3:29 if you look to the right, you will see a man in black holding one of those things that the grim reaper or "death" carries. This symbolizes what is about to come because of the results of their actions. Then Ben wakes up to find that he is in bed with the girl from the beginning. This is bad though because he only used her when he wanted, and didn't save her before. Then the machine begins to spark and smoke and close, taking Ben along with it. Andrew tries to find something in the manual to stop this, but can't so he tries to destroy it. But it is too late and he is also closed inside of it. It ends with a man nonchalantly picking up the box and walking away with it. Like "Okay, our experiment is over. That's that." I think the whole thing is also a metaphor to show that things like drugs are not that bad if it only affects you, but when it starts affecting those around you, then you will get hurt in the end too.
