Catastrophic Engine Failure VW 2.0t TSI Engine ~ MONEY SHIFT!
Vložit
- čas přidán 5. 06. 2020
- This VW GTI engine suffered severe engine damage due to an improper down shift. The GTI was turned stage 2 with supporting modifications. The car was shifted from third gear to second gear at an extremely high RPM. This lead to severe top end engine damage, and engine replacement. In this video we inspect the damage to the TSI engine! #humblemechanic

Man, it looks so much easier to work on an engine when it's out of the vehicle.
Yeah at the first place you think that you will lose time extracting the engine but in reality i prefer take my time to extract it xD
It is. Stuff that take hours on the engine takes minutes with the engine out off the car.
Ujiltrom M wait till you see front wheel drive transmissions, you’ll never look at a transmission mechanic with the same respect again (unless they pull it too, which a lot of specialty shops don’t do)
aterack833 i personaly work a lot on FWD and FWD engines are build different
First of all they are transversals not longitudinal
So it’s easier to work when the engine is in, even more since the transmission need to be disconnected with less space
But when talking about longitudinals engines it’s generally more simple to throw it out in my opinion
Trust me from experience it really really is 😂😂😂
Man if someone made an engine autopsy channel I would watch it
"Sir look at the hole in the side of this cylinder wall." "It looks like our man went overbore." YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
if you've ever seen Hagerty, that guy does awesome engine rebuilds of like anything under the sun. Not super informative, but definitely fun to watch
Hell yeah
there is one in russian ;)
If someone makes an engine autopsy channel of a miss-shift when those believe they wanted to go from third to fourth when they went from third to second when they believe the engine wound to at least 10,000 RPM before self destructing. As the few believe they wanted a diesel dropped off after it ran away when those had to do an autopsy as to what damage the runaway did.
I am glad that:
1 - It's not my car
2 - I didn't do it
3 - don't have to pay for it
I hope nobody was hurt in the events leading up to today's instructional video.
Thanks from Portugal Charles!
100% agree!!!
Only thing hurt here is the Engine and that guy's ego lol
is not an engine failure, is a driver failure.
I ain’t no expert. . . but the ECM should limit the RPM so that an inadvertent shift into a lower gear should not destroy the engine. We didn’t hear what the respective ratios of second and third were in this car. . . My Humble (see what I did there?) opinion. . .
@@oijhhytdirhrbru It does not matter, tuned, Turbo, NA. This will happen to most engines when going from redline on 3rd gear down to 2nd gear. Rev limiter is only there for top of any given gear, that is software, in this case it's all mechanical.
Both
Bram Moerman he forced it into second gear and dropped the clutch, so the physical speed of the car and transmission at such a low gear is what overrevved it, not him pushing the gas
Because of the red lining in 3rd gear and the speed he was flying in and accidentally forced it into 2nd gear he mechanically overrided all ecm safety measures and it being a mechanical override it is simply impossible for the ecm to react to make things right. When accelerating and you hit the max possible rpm your ecm simply won't allow the engine to turn faster, in case of a downshift from a higher gear at redline rpm into a lower gear the rpm of the engine would be much higher then the ecm or engine can handle...
He hit 1.21 gigawatts on that shift.
Great Scott!!

He's gonna shit!

I love how he calls him “SpiCULLY” ... Crowe even lolled at that in the commentary. 😆 Best teen movie of all time! 🤘🤘🤙

You sir have seen too much.
This is NOT a common issue, but also not the first time I have seen this damage. YIKES!!!!! $$$ SHIFT! Something else I did in this video is leave a little more of the causal comments in. Taking a more laid back approach!!! What do ya think?
I’ve money shifted before but thanks fully no damage knock on wood!
I like this style of editing, easy to watch.
Definitely more fun for this kinda tear down vid!
Great, quick tear down video. Keep up the good work! So thankful that the air cleaning race caR we have been building has the DSG, so we can NOT mess it up with a Money $hift! Looking forward to soon being able to show the World how to “burn rubber instead of toxic gasoline.” Maybe we will get the chance to do a little head to head, friendly race with our Golfs? Might not be totally level playing field though because “R caR is cleaner than your caR!”
Ouch, that’s painfully expensive. Love the video, very informative. Thanks again.
As my friend would say: The issue Originated between the steering wheel and seat.
In aviation we call it the meat servo.
On a motorcycle they call it a failure of the nut that connects the handlebar to the seat
It was the nut at the end of the stick that failed for sure.
The Germans will soon figure out a way to have plastic pistons
I'm surprised that the engine valve cover is still metal
@@SPimentaTV It would be plastic if only it wasn't doing the work of cam bearing caps.
Valve cover as cam bearings, oh my god 🙂
I would expect that in a lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. They already have plastic carburetors on theirs. The first time I cleaned one I was a bit afraid that the carburetor cleaner might melt it.
Garage 54 made wood pistons...
Me being an extreme expert: Yes I i recognize this part, this is an engine.
Hahaha
Vw: engine desteoyed at 9000rpm
V-tec: lol
A friend that had a subaru with the old EJ22 from the mid 90s demonstrated some 4th gear @ 6000rpm into 2nd gear "moneyshifts" to me. Obviously the tachometer was buried, but it should of been nearly 11k rpm. Did it multiple times on a longblock with 275k miles. It really didn't seem to care at all.
Considering i had a mk7 gti with 420hp and also a Civic. I find this true 😂 the vdub was fast but it just cant hold up..
The TSI engines in VWs are pretty fragile. They have enough trouble staying together with normal driving. Anything outside of that is asking alot of it.
😂😂😂😂🥰🥰🥰😂😂🥰😂 I own an Audi with this motor but also have an si that takes a beating and sees nearly 9k on a daily basis for the last 5 years. Your comment is amazing 😂🙌🏻
@TETRO MONEY I did this in my Jackson Racing supercharged K20Z3...just kept on going lol.
"Money shift" love it.
Should be "Endless money pit" Poor design by VW not to prevent such driver abuse.VAG products are nice but definitely not reliable, especially when it comes to electric & software. Wonder how their EV's will be.
"Let's go ahead and get this cylinder head off" - proceeds to cut together 8 extremely satisfying and gratuitous breakaway snaps as he loosens the head bolts.
Excellent rapid-fired commentary. No "ahh", "umm", or "ya know". Bravo.
Plus, no self-absorbed, talking head trying to be a movie star. Much respect!
i can imagine the face of the owner when he downshifted. Sucked to be him.
Tbh I'd buy automatic just because of this risk, but man so many automatic transmissions are risky/fail often. Even buying them new is not a guarantee it'll last. Let alone buying a used automatic. :(
@@CitarNosis317 See, this is why I think young people/noobs/cautious drivers, should get an automatic.
@@CitarNosis317 Or just don't go autocrossing if you are not familiar enough with your car or are uncomfortable with the way it shifts.
@@CitarNosis317 Automatic sucks. As much as people that aren't able to use a manual gearbox :p
@@AlessandroGenTLe I learned to use a manual gearbox 60 years ago. I now use automatic in all my vehicles, because I'm not a dumbass who thinks his cock is big from shifting a manual.
Manual guys:
Automatic guys: Ah, now I see the appeal
I have a narrow-gated 6-speed on my 370Z and in the beginning I found that I accidentally missed the gate a couple of times when going up or down from 5th gear. Keeping my eye on the gear selection indicator before reengaging the clutch saved me from some nasty drivetrain consequences.
Another fantastic video. Gotta love the Humble Mechanic.
I just sent you a message through your website. Hope it gets to you ok.
Wow! I came here for a humble window replacement a few videos ago. Your videos are very thorough and entertaining! You are a very talented mechanic! Thanks for the well enunciated descriptions of each step. I’ve leaned a lot! Cheers!
Thank you
And that's why you don't dump the clutch. I've almost money shifted a time or two, but having that split second "whoa that doesn't feel right" prior to having the clutch fully engaged was my saving grace.
happened to me today i stomped the clutch as soon as i noticed what i was doing didnt even hear it rev up yet but boy did i shit my pants
love these simple tear down and explanatory vids! Fair to say floating a valve is a bad thing.
Really appreciated the explanation at the end about why the ECM won't save you in a money shift situation. Makes sense.
Running to the limit in 3.rd ...
Then smashing it into 2.nd ...
That was truly spirited driving.
I did that exact same shift to my 95 Passat Vr6. I only bent the exhaust valves slightly and stretched the chain. I drove it over 3 hours to get home. I guess they were a little stronger back in the day!
You always make it look so easy!
Anyway, these sort of shifts are sometimes easily done in the heat of the moment... been there done that. Have fun and take your time!
I only know how to turn an ignition key, but I’ve spent my life being in complete AWE of mechanics & engineers who can do what this guy does. It’s FASCINATING! 👏👏🤘
Holy crap!! I just had similar failure happen to my tdi today!! I thought I was going crazy!! The sound it makes when it fails is absolutely crazy!
At least the pistons looked ok, i have seen a lot of engines where this has happened where the valve heads have failed and ended up in the piston and the cylinder head. Great video
11:55 good explanation of why ECU can't rev limit engine when downshifting
Not normally but it’s possible to use the abs pump ( or a extra one like it ) and some additional software and extra plumbing and solenoid for limiting the clutch engagement aka traction control
There’s a 5.2L “Voodoo” engine (Mustang GT 350) in my shop that the driver money shifted. There were 2 connecting rods melted into the (plastic) oil pan and the rod bearings were partially flattened out on one end from the extreme pressures they experienced from over revving before the rods gave up. Dude was on a track, had a short shifter and tried to go 5th to 3rd but got 1st. Stored data indicated engine RPM in excess of 9500 RPM. Epic engine carnage on that one!
Holy cow!!
When you see a plastic oil pan you know that company values their customer experience
:D u can kill anything with a nice misshift related overrevving. :D
I expected some snapped timing and a LOT of damage. Actually this is not that bad, it is fairly easily fixable and the block and the bottom end looks like new.
That's... ouch...
A while ago, a friend showed me his H22 block from his Prelude. Con rod made a viewing port in both sides...😬
Years ago we were playing doing top speed runs on bikes on an airfield. A guy on a zx12r blew the engine on one run and looking at it back in the pits area we could see a hole in the block.
Few weeks later he posted pictures of the block post strip down. There were 6 holes in the block. 3 rods had snapped, each punching holes front and back.
Oops!
Overall impressed the bottom end was ok. It is a testament to the 2.0T TSI engine really. I've seen money shifting resulting in bottom end window insertions as the bearings and caps exiting the building.
Very nice video, love it! you give every detail on the engine damage.
I hope the culprit got themselves an automatic gearbox too when they got the replacement engine.
Yeah he is probably complaining about reliability while casually driving at 5k rpm all day and downshifting
Wow I'm a big VW fan and I've never seen that kinda damage before 😱😱😱
Yeah, but at least it wasn't Engine/Manufacturer error, as much as it was Operator Error.
So that’s the rockers to rockets conversion I’ve heard about! Gotta love the one rocker embedded in the cover. A fitting wall art conversation piece for sure.
You're really brilliant and organized. You work exactly like your building an extremely complicated computer. It's really impressive.
Maybe the driver was expecting some kind of VTEC experience 😂 That poor engine. A bit of JB weld though and it will be good as new 😬 Super video, a DSG or traditional auto for the owner I think!
Vtec mostly gets to mid class performance
Or a bicycle......
This guy must've been off his rocker
He certainly has done his foo-foo valve.
Not what it was cracked up to be!
At least he wasn't pissed 'n' broke.
This is the best video on the money shift..you cover everything and it’s all really well explained plus you get straight into the job..with great humour..brilliant
Thank you!
Your video's are great! You have a real talent for clear and engaging narration!
I have a stage 1, 2017 GTI with 44k miles. So this sounds like my car lol. Painful to see.
Don't worry, just the driver of this car is an idiot, he torture this car and bring it to the limit.
So don't worry, just make sure you to make the oil change on the time .
Great video! I know it probably doesn’t matter, but every time I see a plastic oil pan I die a little inside.
Love all the light in the new garage and the multiple angles and editing. Reminds me a little of Papadakis’ engine teardowns.
Thank you. This is actually still the old shop. What you didn’t see is me soaked in sweat because it was 100f out haah
You make disassembly look so easy, interesting to see though 👍
Slipper clutch like some motorcycles have, that is what this guy needed.
He needed to be a better driver. I have been driving for 20 years, cars, trucks and even 18 wheelers. Never have I ever done something so silly (some may even say stupid). I only know one person that has done this street racing, it was an Acura RSX Type S. Same thing, 3rd to 2nd. Engine was gone.
Not sure how a slipper clutch would work as you are basically coming down two gears in in one shift.example going for fourth but getting second.
@@nickpappas4133 Slipping, simple
@@_Mario_PL_ That, for sure mate!
@@nickpappas4133 A slipper clutch disengages itself slightly (slips) when over-revving. Supermoto racers can go from 6th to 2nd for a corner and the slipper clutch minimizes overrev and wheel hop.
Other than (maybe?) structural strength, how would the scuffs on the cast affect the function of the engine?
I was going to ask the same thing. If the lifter bores and other precision surfaces are ok, why not just get some new parts and put it back together? One possible problem might be cracks that aren't immediately apparent.
Love your content man! Interesting tear down
You do a great job on ur videos and i learn so much from them. could watch them all day
Nice video! I’m guessing this is virtually impossible in a stock DSG setup since it won’t let you down shift if the revs are too high? I always assumed this but just want to make sure. What about stage 2 DSG setup, would it have prevented downshifting?
For stage 2 engine tune you have to independently tune DSG transmission to a stage one time to not damage it.
For stage 1engine tune DSG gets retuned through engine..
I’m actually surprised at the damage isolation to the top of the head.
I think what happened is the rocker arms jumped off the hydraulic adjusters and so the valves stayed shut, so they didn't hit the pistons. ????????
Good video. I have a 2015 1.8tsi and very impressed with the little engine. 106000 miles still runs like new with no noticeable oil consumption.
I love the 5 - 2 money shift. The duel mass flywheel start to “separate” 😂
Interesting to me to see this new of an engine being disassembled,..turbo, DI, VVT, VVL, etc
Put the video on 1.25x and check them bouncy Chrisfix hands in the beginning 🤣 love u Charles
I really really appreciate these informational detailed fix it with explanation videos.
Thanks for the HUMBLE tear down.
I’ve money shifted a few times in my civic si luckily caught it before I completely committed to the gear but Honda’s can handle it from time to time lol
Damn!!! At least he might get a better stronger engine, just hope he doesn’t $$$ shift again!!!
It got nothing to do with the engine is strong or not 😋.. Never down shift from third to second gear in high rpm 😅.. It will highly do 💥💥💥 like this one..
He should learn how to drive a manual transmission and this wouldn't have happened.
That's just impressive!!! Never seen that much damage before!
I have worked on a lot of grenaded 2.0Ts (both EA113s and EA888s), and even more 1.8Ts, but this one is... special. Holy crap.
One more reason to love my DSG. Yes I can drive a manual but as my daily it's just easier on me and the car.
At least with the DSG, there is no possibility of shifting to the wrong gear.
@M Bacon If you did most of your 400 miles on express highway, i don't see why you'd hate a manual. I used to drive a lot on French autoroute and German autobahn. A manual car never bothered me until I moved to Paris.
I've owned a DSG and a Multitronic(CVT) before. While the Multitronic was kind of weak, the downshift from gear 3 to 2 in a DSG often acted quite bumpy. I'd therefore choose any old-school Aisin 6 speed torque-converter automatic over these two German creations.
@@kbatzler - you'll understand the disadvantages of DSG when you need to get one serviced. It's literally a case of throwing the whole car away when the transmission gets a fault.
weld the hole in the valve cover, send the head in for a valve job (might as well get it ported), performance cam, and rockers, and it'll be just fine. The gouges don't mean anything
Sooooo educational.....for the mechanically 'challenged' like myself. Thanks HM!
Thanks for the awesome teardown. 👍💪🏼😁
And that my friend is why I chose a DSG
So you’re saying your shifting is as bad as this engine’s owner?
@@harbl2479 thats right! Lol what a girl
So you can’t drive😝
What do you mean ..I choose the DSG
All DSGs are duel clutch. Always have been.
The ONLY downside to having a manual.
Not the only downside, it also depends on the number of stoplights on your daily commute.
@@karpo63 true. Very true.
Being slow is also a downside

this kind of a relaxing video. Appreciate the time you took to record this. 😀

I bet the next car the owner will buy will be with an DSG. 😂 🤣😂 🤣
Nice dissection!
Nothing more enjoyable than seeing a money-shifting driver getting thrown forward to the steering wheel, eyes glaring wide, teeth clenched, knuckles white on the steering, and that foot planted hard flat - almost through the floorboard, when that engine suddenly hits the max mark on the rev counter and the pointer can't go any further. The screaming noise it makes can be heard 4 blocks away when its turning 150 times a second. Pure symphonic bliss and top class entertainment!!

We could see the missing rockers in your insta photos and were looking forward to this vid. Thanks for all your informative videos, they have been very helpful on our journey building an air cleaning race caR.
Yep. the rocker into the cover is my fav part!
Hated this Mk6 Gti engine, what a POS
Man that version of the 2.0t is problematic

Fascinating. Thanks for making this video.
Job well done. I like the way you presented as much as possible.
Thanks
It’s educational n interesting watching your video. Thanks for sharing. Your commentary makes it more interesting n easy to understand. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
I had an A4 with a similar experience but on the car I worked on it was only cly4 it had miss fire and no compression when I took the valve cover out the rockers have relocated themselves somewhere else in the engine
Such a great tear down video but I got to say there is something about the way this engine is put together that just looks cheap to me but I do like that it still uses a cast iron block.
Great vídeo i have seen all your videos, greetings from México
I did a money shift on my L13 Dsi Jazz a few years ago on the highway doing about 120kph. Went from 3rd to 2nd and dropped the clutch. I know the tacho only has numbers 8K rpm and I saw the needle hit 8K (2K over redline) . I sent the car in for a check up and it ended up being fine. 100000km later and the motor is still running. 😋
Real cool to see thism but dude..you have real skils to break down an engine like that and also know how to build it up again. Awesome
I hate to admit it but I love videos like this
It's good!!! ALL GOOD!
Great video 👍 What kind of after market parts are available for this engine? As these tunes are pushing more power, spending the money for upgraded parts is always a good thing.
Love this video. Thank you. An engine autopsy. I hear the term catastrophic failure but never witnessed it. Tell me, the pcv, is there an updated version I've heard they give grief? I get small burbles on idle, not knocks or bangs etc. Burbles. Have you ever diagnosed as to why these occur ? Much appreciated
Fabulous look - man, but you are FAR too Humble. ;-) Great Video. Never ended up in 2nd when pulling straight down for 4.
Be cool if the Trans had electronic or mechanical control gear lockout for lower gears when at set RPM and/or speed, so it wont let you shift into a low gear if it cant handle. Dodge Challenger uses skip shift to force you from 1st to 4th, just use the same tech to stop a bad downshift. Great breakdown vid.. I could watch these all day!
As a new owner of an Audi s3 I’ve been searching for a long time for a video like this that shows the 2.0 being disassembled really helped me understand the platform better, do you have any other similar videos of teardown or rebuilds?
I have an 01 Audi A4 and recently did a 3-4-3 shift. Thankfully I wasn't trying to go fast. No damage done.
I money shifted my MK7 R but luckily I was able to stab the clutch before any damage could occur. It was still a money shift because the dealer had to pull it apart to verify nothing was damaged. Just a couple rocker arms popped off. Everything else survived.
I put a diesel geek shifter link in it after that and it made a WORLD of difference.
I just got one of these at the shop, i checked the mechanical over rev fault at 9700 rpms, “ customer stated they were cruising on 6th gear and slowly started loosing power” lol I gave the customer the option, to remove the oil pan and check for carnage and remove the valve cover and check for carnage and If the pistons and cylinders walls look ok we can put a cylinder head or used or new engine.
Great Stuff!!
The 2017 passat family would like to know what kind of power can we get out of our 1.8 turbo?
