    I feel like channels like yours and Faye and Rafi have helped in stopping the stigma around medical school. Like as someone who wants to go to medical school one day, I've been really scared about not having a normal life because of medicine, especially as someone who did a degree first. I'm excited to make studying medicine my own

      Yess samee! This is something that my uncles and parents etc stigmatised as well. I got the idea from them that once I start medical school I won’t have any free time to pursue my other hobbies. Watching this video and other medical ytubers tho showed me that no, you can have a life outside of medicine!! Good luck to all of us starting medicine this september!

    Thanks for this Lydie. As a 1st year med student, I've also been taking things easy like getting at least 6½hrs/day regardless, cooking new dishes& sharing them with friends(might start a lil' biz soon😁), watching movies unapologetically🙈, and spending time with God. It's been tough but rewarding.

    Medicine is the first to preach about being a 'multifaceted' individual, but then creates a nasty stigma towards anything that deviates from the extreme academic lifestyle that top students have.
    I'm going to be a doctor, it's a job. It's not a personality trait or something that holds value over me as an individual, beyond a job and an interesting field.
    Agreed and well put!

    This video puts it so perfectly. As a first year med student I have loved med school so far but it hasn’t been my top priority, I went to med school to become a doctor but also to make friends, improve myself and gain life experiences, I’ve joined societies, church and gone out with flatmates, is all about balancing. I get a more backlash from people on other courses than my medic friends, they think med students only ever study then see me going out to events and talking about work we have. Thank you for this video, I was feeling guilty that I had made it into med school and haven’t been studying all of the time with this opportunity!! Now I understand there is no reason to feel guilty! Love u girls xx

    • @LydieandHazal
      @LydieandHazal  Před 2 lety +3

      No reason at all to feel guilty!!! You can go to medical school and acquire more than just a degree so LOVE the fact that you won't be limiting yourself ❤️❤️❤️

    I remember my family members telling me before i started med school that I had to drop everything and sacrifice everything for medicine. My mental health, my physical health, my health all round was destroyed. And if I failed exams, they told me it was because I was busy doing useless things.
    I was always the type that assimilates well when I read in the morning after waking up, for few hours. What I read, I understand immediately.
    People made me feel bad for not being able to stay up all night reading. They told me I shouldn’t eat, take my bath, I shouldn’t do anything, not even go to Church, and that’s where I come alive and feel the most peace. That all I should do was to read. 24/7.
    Well, as we all know, I listened. Even though I had doubts. I still let them think for me and direct my life. And guess what happened. It ended in tears. And still, they put all the blame on me that I should have tried harder. When I denied myself food to read, denied myself sleep, denied myself so many things.
    I always asked myself if I couldn’t have hobbies anymore. I always felt my hobbies were misplaced priorities as they always told me.
    Now I’m trying to get back on my own feet and start afresh, I’ve decided to not kill myself, destroy myself or sacrifice my peace and sanity for anything. I’ve decided to listen to my body. I know better what it wants and when it needs what it wants. I won’t let myself break down again. I’ve decided to be sane again.

    As someone who is hoping to go into Medicine in September, I love watching your videos - really gives a great insight into life as a medical student. There’s a lot of worries I have about potentially working in the NHS one day (the show ‘This is going to hurt’ was extremely eye opening). I’m going to go into it making sure I don’t tie my self worth to academics, and ensuring that it doesn’t consume my whole life. Thank you.

    Yea I totally agree with u with the “ideal med student picture of being in the library all day” and the “ideal doctors” but on the flip side we kind of already know the pitfalls of this unrealistic standard! Like doctors, at least in the US are twice as likely to commit suicide than the normal population! Like that’s insane considering how they obviously have to be decently smart to become a doctor, and then ur usually making much more money than the normal population and with all these bonuses they’re not even on par with the normal population for suicide rates.
    These standards are harmful! When u put all ur self worth into a job, cause a lot of stuff that happens in this job is completely not under ur control, like my mom is a psychiatrist and has had patients die on her watch and I’ve seen how horribly it affects her mental health and it’s quite sad.
