  • Pandas are very cute, but they don't do much for their ecosystem-and they take away a lot of resources from other endangered plants and animals that support multitudes. Here's why these adorable creatures are possibly the most overrated animals in the world.

So conservation effort for Giant Panda also includes other endangered species in the nature reserves, public only thinking of Giant Panda but in reality China Forestry Department is looking at the whole eco-system in the nature reserves.

@@BrassBashers Do you know how many panda bases in China?
At least 14. And there are four large breeding centres out of the 14.
And all the nannies/keepers and researchers in these panda bases are university graduates with degrees related to animal.
And all adult panda must be housed individually with their own indoor enclosure & outdoor yard, with one graduate with a university degree related to animal to take care of just one adult panda.
And the captive population has reached 673 by Oct 2021, therefore all these panda bases need at least 650 university graduates just to take care of the adult pandas.
Then there is the panda nursery that need 24hrs care from nannies/keepers about 4~6 of them for 24hrs care.
Then there is the veterinarian group with doctorate degree that take care of the sick and elderly pandas that need special medical care & also doing medical research on panda.
Then there are 24 hrs security staff and housekeepers to keep the base clean and facilities maintenance staff to keep the base running smoothly.
Majority of these bases have no or have very little income from tourists except "Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding", because most of the other bases are all near the nature reserves and far away from the city, therefore they have very little income or none at all because some of them are not breeding centre.
Therefore don't assume some of those monies went into somebody's pocket.
For example I read that they might even want to release some Pandas into Jiangxi Province so to create another new wild population there, whereby Panda went extinct long time ago.
It has a nature reserve suitable for panda. After all, Panda in ancient time were found in the whole of Southern China and part of Northern China, Northern Vietnam and Northern Myanmar.
They have created a Giant Panda Re-Introduction base and probably three pandas, one male & two females could have been released.
I have no more update on this, but to have a genetic feasible population, I think "China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Panda" could be releasing more than 10 genetic diverse pandas into that nature reserve in Jiangxi Province, so to create a sustainable genetically diverse panda population there.
Therefore, we can see most of the bases and activities need a lot of monies to keep them going and they are not money making projects.

    • @garymoh4828
      @garymoh4828 Před 2 lety

@@BrassBashers Cutting down of forest are due to human population expansion through out millenniums, therefore it is not something recently.
For example panda were found in whole of Southern China & part of Northern China, Northern Vietnam and Northern Myanmar in ancient time, now they are found only in pockets of nature reserves in Sichuan, Gansu & Shaanxi provinces of China.
Then came the bamboo flowering in the 1980s that cut down more than half of the wild panda population to just above 1,000 wild pandas & till today, the wild population is yet to reach the number before the bamboo flowering in 1980s.
As I have already posted, "China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Panda" is creating a new wild panda population in Jiangxi Province, in the future decades from now, we might see more such new panda populations in other provinces in China by releasing re-wild captive pandas into these nature reserves in other provinces. It may take decades to achieve a sizable new wild panda populations but at least it is going in the right direction for the Giant Panda.

After 60 years of decline and failing conservation efforts, wild panda populations are now rising. There was much to learn about them. And the government had to get serious in preserving large enough chunks of habitat. Panda live in a unique blend of subtropical and cold mountain habitat. The plants and other animals there are unique and endangered, too. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries are a world heritage site. This shows what can be achieved. It did cost a lot of money. It achieved a lot. The world is a richer place with golden takins, snub-nosed monkeys, giant salamanders, bamboo rats, and pandas still around.

Thus there are many flagship/keystone species which covers many other species while being protected.
Panda is a very fragile species, and protecting its wild breeding environment means that the living environment of a large number of other species is also protected.
And panda is attractive symbol. Without which less eyes would be gathered on protecting other species.
For example, you are not willing to invest more resources but to reduce investment in some species to protect other species. But panda increases total investment.

All captive pandas are all descendants of rescued pandas in the past, there were massive bamboo flowering in 70s and 80s which caused most bamboo forests to die after that.
These will cause many wild pandas to die of starvation, most of today captive pandas are actually descendent of some of those rescued pandas of those natural disasters.
And once in awhile, some sick or injured wild pandas were rescued and became domesticated, therefore they will remain captive because they are too used to human and releasing them back to wild may cause problem to those untrained human that encounter them.
After captive panda population has reached more than 300, "China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda" has started the program to release re-wild captive pandas back to nature reserves whereby the panda population is small so to increase the number as well as genetic diversity to prevent the extinction of these small populations.
Around 14 re-wild pandas were released back to the wild in Sichuan Province (maybe more by now), and at least 3 re-wild pandas were released into Guanshan nature reserve in Jiangxi Province where wild panda went extinct a long time ago.
"China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda" will release more than 10 re-wild pandas into Guanshan nature reserve in Jiangxi Province so to artificially create a new wild panda population outside of Sichuan, Ganus & Shaanxi provinces where wild pandas are found.

Pandas are a textbook example of evolutionary failure they legitimately cannot survive with or without human help and you dare to literally call humans overrated on a device so complicated no animal would ever be able to even conceive the very thought of the basic components of the device that you're using right now that a human was able to figure out and you call them overrated

Even if they're not as smart as us we're being so "smart" and ruining animal's environments, and yes, I do agree with your point about devices, but that still doesn't change the fact that we're not doing much too help the earth.

You agree with the guy. That's not all he said. What he basically said is "they get too much protection let them die they are useless" they are very important to ecosystem they control bamboo bamboo is fastest growing plant it will cause outbreak also what I learned in biology is that we should protect any endangered species everything is about money these days

To say that different organisms hold different value in the conservation of an ecosystem is simply wrong. There’s more to it than that. Removing one seemingly less impactful species creates a chain reaction that cycles its way up the food chain destroying the entire ecosystem. Some species may play bigger roles in the ecosystem, but they are equally important to protect. A loss of either would be devastating.

As a biologist, the media and public perception towards environmental conservation is so biased. When we there are too much CO2, then we must plants more tree. Yes but the actual major things that help to fix the CO2 is the sea algae, which also helped by marine animals that bring down the carbon to the deep sea ( Carbon sinking ). Hence, saving the sea is equally, or perhaps more important than prioritizing tree planting.

nirvaana mathi humans are too intelligent, that's why we altered the food chain.
And why would the most diverse, the most intelligent animal would waste their precious resources on some useless animals that doesn't have any benefit to our ecosystem?
