Fender skirt fabrication - sheathing with 18 gauge 🛠️

  • We are fabricating flush mounted fender skirts, not the bubble style. The first step was hand forming 5/16" round rod to the shape of the wheel opening. Now we're going to apply two pins that will pin to the wheel lip then we'll sheath the fender skirt with 18 gauge sheet metal... somedays things just don't go your way, today was that day 😆

Love the fender skirts, I think they keep the "extended" line of the car going, which helps to integrate the extended headlights, taillights, and rear deck. Looking very good.

Although I can appreciate the creativity and work that went into the skirt, I like the flow of the lines of the car without skirts. I thought it looked best after you cut open the wheel well to compliment the front wheel opening with the rear one.

Skirt looks mint. If you weld some sort of a tab near the lower ends of that skirt, where you can run a bolt through in the front an the rear of the wheel from behind the fender towards the wheelopening , making them accessible for in case you have to take of the wheel off, I think that will be sufficient combined with the pins on top. The car is getting really classy now!

Chad…The Distributor length from the bottom of the Manifold Flange to the end of the shaft should be 7.75 inches. MSD sells Distributors with adjustable Collars to adjust the length. But you may need an ignition module/coil to work with it. MSD 85501 is an example. Also note that older SBC setups had the Alternator / Generator mounted on the Left side using a bracket mounted to the front 2 exhaust manifold bolts. And when the Oil fil tube was on the Intake, the Thermostat housing went up and straight towards the radiator. This is what you need to connect that upper radiator hose. See Summit SUM-370995

The alternator that mounted on the left side used a short water pump

@@terrywalker7941 Yes, But with the correct pulleys, you can switch to the short, Or if you are making the Bracket, you can make it for the Long. Nate did a lot of work to make it work on the right with the old style Manifold.

Why don’t you jack the rear up and set jack stands under the axel housing. It would keep the body to wheel height the same and you could work at a comfortable height with out your boots in the way.

I had a 1970 Pontiac Bonneville that had fender skirts and they had a hook at top middle that grabbed the top edge of wheel well and a spring loaded bar pull the hook down and lifted up and sprung tight against the bottom of skirt. The bottom of skirt had a square tang that fit in slot of quarter panel wheel well at front and back held by a catch it slid up in, if all that makes any sense. Chad I caught the Count Chocula comment! lol

Excellent job putting the skirts together, personally I really like seeing the wheels in the back which in turn makes it look more uniform with the front, and the cut line on the quarter panel where it exposes the wheel, to me it already accents the rear wheel very well. For cruising I’d leave the skirts off, parked at a show I’d possibly put them on. 💯

Chad, You need to make a 2 piece slotted clip similar to a gate latch. but locking in place on either end of the bottom of the fender skirt. I'm not a big fan of the fender skirts and much prefer the the great wheel opening you created with the shiny full wheel disks.

Fender skirts adds a lot. One question I have to ask is how do you take it off for a flat? I know you have a plan, but I will give you another option. Just put premium tires on that will never go flat. The fender skirt does add a lot of character to the car but should receive a different paint tone to separate it from the car body. Take it easy.

Pin it bad jet, put a pin at the top. So when you put it on that pin center's it and input a pin on the front of the quarter panel. And then have your lock part on the back. So you can pull it in or out. Make your like a little spring-loaded type deal where you can pull it in or out.

  • @martyhabada6980

I like the look of the skirts how ever I do not know why you cut the wheel opening in the first place. Would have been easier to make smaller skirts and have the original structure around them. That would have been easier. Also A finger distance away from the tire seems to tight. But its your dream not mine. You will probably have to add some flat stock inside the wheel well to bolt them to. Looking good .

Chad and Jolene a way you can fasten the skirts on is to weld a small bolt on in the middle and take a piece of flat bar drill three holes in the flat bar weld a guide at the front and back then take a rod connected to the top and bottom holes and weld a lever onto the flat bar, drill a hole through the front and back of your skirts into the lip of the quarter. You can latch them on like you latch a garage door.

a small dogleg to wrap around at the front and back of the skirt to tie it into the body would look good. A possible solution to lower attachments would ba a simple gate latch that has the two position handle and a simple pin that goes out to the fender, same as the top pins. one at each end would be simple to do although not so simple for you right now with the skirt welded on already. Just a simple persons thoughts.
