Highlights from the modern pentathlon event at the London 2012 Olympic Games as the Czech Republic's David Svoboda claims the gold medal with China's Zhongrong Cao claiming silver and Hungary's Adam Marosi winning bronze.
The modern pentathlon was introduced by Baron de Coubertin at the Stockholm Games in 1912, comprising pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. It was his belief that this event would test "a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby a complete athlete."
From 1912 to 1980, the Olympic modern pentathlon was held over five days with one event per day. Now, the event is held over one day. Competitors score points in the first three events, which decide their starting position for the final combined event, composed of the shooting and running disciplines. The first one over the line wins the gold medal.

this sport was invented by Pierre de Coubertin to simulate the experience of a 19th century cavalry soldier behind enemy lines: he must ride an unfamiliar horse, fight with pistol and sword, swim, and run. It was invented to see who was the best all round athlete. It wasn't invented for not talented athletes
It's actually based on the traditional ancient Greek games. It was merely rejuvinated in 1912.
They could easily keep Pentathlon and Wrestling if they ditched sports that don't need the Olympics. Football, Basketball and Golf are strong enough to survive on their own.
Unfortunately it's sports like those which rake in the money.
At least Pentathlon uses sports that pretty much will never leave the games, so no extra venues
Pentathlon has been at the last 3 Olympics including this what do you mean
@@DHU11 I don't remember. I think it was in response to a comment or a news article at the time regarding ditching certain sports. Probably deleted now so my comment has no context. 🤷🏻♂️
@@ppeter1982 wrestling was tossed out of the olympics over penthatlon in a huge blindside back in 2013 before getting voted back in
R.I.P. Modern pentahlon. Lived 112 years (1912-2024)
Baron de Coubertin rotates in his grave.
Oh
wow , why that horse with the korean athlete did that , what can be the reason ?
All athletes must ride unfamiliar horse during the game.
Hi
@ElGatoVolador2010 you are truly ignorant wrestling has been in the Olympics since the beginning. It takes a true athlete to make it as an Olympic wrestler. Extreme fitness, technical strategy and a quick mind also the sheer passion intensity and tenaciousness one must have to go far in the sport of wrestling. The Modern Pentathlon is 4 sports 3 (fencing riding and runing shooting?) of witch many can not compete do to the costs and the items needed
